  1. Perhaps we need to sue them over their misleading name, since "Service" seems to have been deleted from their vocabulary?

  2. Computer Gods.  What have you done?  The only solution requires travel to a volcano. Honestly, it could be a million different things.  There's a very slight possibility that the two problems are related, a screwy video card/video drivers maybe.  Windows is a complicated thing, and once in a while things get... I'll just say I have a word for it.  Identifying issues causing random reboots isn't an easy thing to troubleshoot, but if it's a blue screen you're seeing (pretty rare these days) make sure to write down the details, usually under the heading "Technical Details"

  3. If the problem is specific to Peachtree, you don't notice wonky fonts anywhere else, and it returns to normal after a restart of the application, there are a couple possibilities I can think of. You've angered Peachtree and/or the Computer Gods.  There is no fix. There could be a zoom/font size adjustment feature that's getting triggered by a key combination/stuck keyboard key.EDIT: After a second look, I'm leaning more toward toward the first possibility.  The menu bar across the top is especially broken looking, and not what you would expect to happen when using an application's built-in font size adjustment.

  4. Odd man out again. We have a Canon Image Runner (which is a stand alone machine) that functions as a scanner, printer, and copier. It is tied into the network so anyone can access it. It is the workhorse of the Canon family. We have had it for more years than I care to count - but we keep it maintained by the best Canon technician in a multi-county area and it just keeps on working. We do a ton of scanning, copying and printing on that machine. And from your topic title, I would simply mention that we have never achieved "paperless" status and we have been scanning everything we can since 2006. "Less paper", but not paper less.

  5. I got a reprimand and a slapped hand today from the IRS with a threat of a $500 fine for not filing an 8867 on a EITC return. Funny thing was that I had originally filed it with the 8867 and file was rejected because minor daughter had already claimed herself as a dependent. When I paper filed and amended the daughter, I forget to attach a copy of the 8867 to the return. Sheeesh!!!!!! This was not my first rodeo. They sent it by Certified mail and when I called the number on the letter, I got a recording who continued to reprimand and threaten me in no uncertain terms. They did say that I was not getting a penalty at this time, but just remember that the Big Boys are watching me. No chance to defend or explain. They sure know how to make your day.

  6. Same here. Still preparing 1099's on paper, even for my client who issues over 200 of them each year. Hope he never hits 250. But then I'm paper-bound anyhow since I'm still preparing Form 1040 on paper. (Notice I said I'm "preparing" these returns, not "filing" them. The only return I FILE is my own. )

  7. It might be a lot to write down, and it might also be completely useless. So, just to set your expectations...

  8. There are a few elements that are very faint, and almost invisible until you hover nearby.  Report Post shows up when you move your mouse over any part of a post.  Same for the little icon to share a post, or hide a signature.  Also, on the Topic List, the page numbers associated with a thread on the Topic List.  They don't really show up until you hover over a specific topic.   It's a design decision, I think.  There are a lot of features and interface elements, and giving them all the same visual weight leads to an overwhelming and cluttered UI.  Only showing some elements on hover helps to minimize that.

  9. Sounds like the "blow me" bit is getting tripped.

  10. I like the idea of not paying for more licenses than you use or need. Unfortunately that isn't an option for me. I need only one but am paying for the minimum of 3 - wish I could have given them to you, jmdaviscpa! Because I have 6 trusts to do for the next 4 years plus 2 p'ships, I'm stuck with MAX again. All other combos are more expensive. And I'm really ticked about the efile fee for payroll returns now. That's another charge to remember to pass along, I guess.

  11. If business loss is equal to or more than W2 earnings, no EIC because earned income is 0 or less.

  12. Everyone in my office has a small scanner at their computer. In addition to being convenient for the user, it gives us a ton of redundancy if a scanner fails. Before all my employees had scanners they had to interrupt another employee whenever they needed something scanned of faxed. We scan and print to Windows Fax to send faxes which is a huge improvement over using a fax machine.

  13. I just googled that one and WOW is it a big honking machine! I sure don't have room for something like that. Both of my "real" scanners (not counting my multi-function machine that scans just a little faster than I can copy-by-hand but is useful for the rare page or two) are small enough to sit on the desktop and behave themselves by staying out of the way.

  14. You are correct. If net rental income is over $3,350 for 2014, no EIC.

  15. For several years I had a client that was on a disability pension. His wife was blind and they had a disabled son who lived with them. I was so happy for then to receive EIC up until the age 62 which was his normal retirement age!!

  16. lol, varying, yes. still, most of the 1099r answers on this thread were wrong. pay your money (none) and take your chances. and yes, 3rd party sick pay (box1/w2 & box 12/code j) also qualifies for eic.

  17. Yes, it's definitely a line 7 situation with the 1099-R. But you see even on this board how varying the answers are. 3rd party sick pay on W2 does qualify for EIC.

  18. i agree with joel. 1099r, code 3, and under min retirement age (check the box on 1099r screen) gets amount to line 7 (earned income) and also generates an eic process. the other times you said this has been talked about confirmed line 7 and eic.

  19. I know and agree with all the positive aspects of efile, but there really is something satisfying about a neat, properly compiled paper return, isn't there?

  21. I've gotten CP2000 notices for SE tax even when the amount WAS listed in Box 3, so don't feel bad. Stupid tax is right.

  24. IRAs always have the taxable amount not determined box checked, because the custodian has no idea of the taxable amount. The only true pensions I've seen with the box checked are old ones from OPM, where you have to use the simplified method to determine the taxable portion.

  25. One other problem, we no longer have ANY time to edit without the "edited" message showing up. You can uncheck the box all you want, but it does not work. Hope you can fix that.

  26. Because the person preparing the form has no real idea what is or is not taxable, so they check that box to cover their a__?
