  1. I have enough to do with my hands with keyboard, calculator, paper control (even in a paperless office!). Plus the issue of replacing monitors that are too far away for comfortable touching distance. I will leave the touchscreen to my tablet, thank you very much. And I just made the switch to Windows 7 a couple of years ago; it's still a half-decade too early to be thinking of another upgrade!

  2. My son is one of those tech minded people whoi likes to download the earlybird new versions of Windows. He's already downloaded Win10 and started exploring it. I'm with Catherine and cbslee and not willing to move to new OS until the majority of glitches are removed beforehand. No Win8 or 8.1 for me. I'll post in a while what my son sees as positives and negatives for win10 and our ATX software. In the meantime, do any of you have experience running ATX programs on WIn7 Pro Platform that is installed on a VM ware station?

  3. I asked the guy who builds my computers about this. He said to agree to be on the list for a free code to reduce annoying reminders but don't install. "In 2021 maybe maybe maybe then we will load it. One should NEVER upgrade a perfectly fine, working PC." I have 7 Pro and always follow his guidance. He hasn't led me astray yet!

  4. I'll share this with you, a non-profit agency had a signed agreement with donor to specific work (restricted grant) they were suppose to do and accomplish by a certain date., By the time it came to submit the report to the donor, the agency found out they had double dipped on salaries from other grants therefore did not use up all the monies from this restricted grant. The agency notified the donor and in their letter mentioned that maybe they can donate the unused monies for their general and operating account instead of returning back, the donor said no and requested the unused money back. So I would recommend notifying the donors and suggest their money can still help out the organization in other ways. MAS

  5. There are several pages in "Church and Clergy Tax Guide" that address this issue, too many to reprint here. I would be happy to read some of this to you if you like or perhaps you can access the material elsewhere. I purchase this resource as a business expense as I do have clergy clients and advise my own church. PM me if you would like to pursue this from the resource I mentioned.

  6. I don't have, nor do I plan to have, any touch screen capabilities. I just tried and I can't even reach my monitors when sitting at my keyboard!

  7. If you're primarily worried about bugs and glitches, then you don't have much to worry about in Windows 8.1 or 10.  Windows 7, 8, and 10 are all incremental updates to Windows Vista.  Vista was the buggy release, the last big platform change after Windows XP.  Performance/stability has only improved since then, starting with Windows 7, getting better in 8, and presumably better again in 10. If you're worried about the touch-optimized interface, well, I think you're screwed.  You'll have to learn to use it or learn to avoid it at some point, and whether you figure it out in Windows 8 or Windows 10 doesn't really matter much.  The harsh reality is that touch devices are killing PC sales, and Microsoft is in the business of staying in business.

  8. And business entity type. If it is a sole proprietor occupying a building owned by the sole proprietor, he is not permitted to rent from himself and therefore, indirectly the rent would be subject to self employment tax because he would not be permitted to deduct the rent on Schedule C.

  9. Thanks, Catherine, but the guide knows more! The ask for redirection of donations is better than returning because that can call into question the status of the church. As I indicated to the OP, there is much more to consider and too much for me to post. My mouth works faster than my fingers

  10. I was going to make a similar suggestion to ILLMAS; contact donors and ask if the contribution can be re-purposed. Otherwise, return. But Margaret knows far more in this area than I do!

  11. With so many things going on with that, I would call the priority line and explain to them that you would like some guidance or a conference with an IRS person to take the returns and see that they are properly processed and posted. If she is on a payment plan, this may require defaulting the payment plan and getting the whole thing back to collections (not automated collections, but a real person collections). I know with the current state of the IRS, that all sound like a pipe dream, but if you and your client have the waiting time, it might work. If that does not fly, you might want to file Form 911. I think your problem is bigger than just deciding whether to send the returns together or separately.

  12. I'd send each one separately....about 3 weeks apart....so one gets posted before the next one arrives. A few years back I sent 2 at the same time (same envelope) and there was some kind of carry-over (I forget exactly what)....and it was just too confusing for the IRS to figure out.

  13. You mentioned they have low rent. The landlord will look to void the rent control if they move their residence to FL.Happened to one of my clients rent went from $1100 a month to $4000. They moved permanently to FL.

  15. NY and NYC are especially notorious for fighting high-income taxpayers moving away. One example, after Rush Limbaugh moved to FL, NY audited him every year for 12 yrs, requiring him to prove that he was spending more time in FL than he spent in NY. That was in addition to changing his voter registration, car registration, doctors, etc. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/09/rush-limbaugh-new-york-ha_n_184926.html http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2011/02/11/judge_out_of_state_ny_property_owners_must_pay_ny_income_tax

  16. Yes... and no. Personally I don't find 8's interface that drastically different from XP.

  17. The course outline has a few items that need to be addressed. 1. A POA is Not needed to request transcripts. Form 8821 will do, which our secretaries use. 2. The hours are listed as 7AM to 7PM. Is this a recent change? It was always 8 to 8. 3. Under the menu options, No.2 - to order record of account - the voice message says it is for accounts Not in collections. Besides, Record of Account only goes back 3 years. We have found that using option 3 will get access to all of the account information, whether in collections or not and whether business or not. When using this option say that you are doing a compliance check. You can order any transcript - Account, Wage & Income (these go back to 2005), Tax return (Record of Account is the Account Transcript and Return Transcript combined, but, again, they only go back 3 years.

  18. 10 is probably more like 8.5 than a new os, so you should be fine, but wait until October-November to see how the roll out goes.

  19. Win 8.1 is actually less buggy than 7, plus it's feature rich and easier to use. I don't rush in and change immediately. I like to lag a bit with any new technology, but win 8 came out in 2012, almost three years ago. And with 10 coming out next month, 7 is getting to be quite old. The newer operating systems are more secure and more user friendly. I know because I cuss the one win7 machine I have at home, every time I need to work on it. I will likely test 10 this fall on my one part-time workstation to test ATX, QuickBooks, etc., and if successful, move to 10 before next tax season. One plus is that I can help my clients with XP thru 8.1, and soon, 10.

  20. Eric, I've always been leery of upgrading on my existing system. I haven't done it since going from 95 to 98 on the same machine. Since then, I've gotten the new os with a new machine. I did go from 8 to 8.1 on my laptop. I just got my latest pc last year with 8.1. Do you see any problem with getting the free upgrage to 10 on the same machine?

  21. Taking into account that the upgrade to Windows 8.1 caused lots of users recurring glitches and quite a few problems, why would you want to upgrade, unless you like the exploring the unknown.
