  1. Abby, I've seen you post a lot of good ideas for enhancements on the "official" board. Maybe they're actually paying attention?

  2. We can finally copy preferences to other computers so we only have to set them up once. Yay! We can choose a default font for our letters. Double yay! We can bulk set sections of Print Packets. Yay! We can set it to enter in all CAPS so I don't have to worry about data entry folks using mixed case. We can bookmark PDFs. Nice. Zip code lookup? Thanks!

  3. I feel like almost every year, something I've wanted has been implemented. I'm quite pleased that ATX listens to us users. I keep a text file that I jot down ideas in during tax season so I don't forget to make suggestions later.

  5. Jackson Hewitt Tax Service has opened early in 3,000 Walmart stores nationwide. Clients can get started on their taxes with their latest paystub and other income verification documents, the tax prep giant said, and can see if they qualify to receive an Express Refund Advance of up to $1,300, a no-fee, zero-percent APR loan. The amount of the advance will be deducted from refunds and reduce the amount that is paid directly to the taxpayer. Returns may be e-filed without applying for this loan. Approved clients may receive $200 on a Walmart eGift card the same day they complete their return with Jackson Hewitt. These clients will then receive any remaining loan balance when they provide their W-2 and file their return. Loans are repaid when clients receive their refunds. I am very confident that all the other fees will cover the "no fee zero percent APR loan".

  6. We only use Nuance for adding passwords, making form fields fillable, rotating pages, rearranging pages, redacting and cropping. We use Foxit Reader for pasting calculator tapes into workpapers and adding notes, all using their Typewriter feature.

  8. Generally speaking, once you have e-filed you can't e-file again. I don't know what would happen if they tried to paper file; JH, etc. isn't going to see any refunds if they qualify for EITC or CTC until after 2/15 as I understand it.

  9. If you go to the Tax Warehouse tab in Return Manager, there is a column called business that would give you Sch C. There are quite a few other useful columns too.

  10. We are auto-renewed by Intuit and just download the software every year. Haven't had a CD in quite awhile and don't want one either. I include the install files in my backup so I have no worries about losing it like I might with a CD. We just get one license in January and buy 2 or 3 more around mid year. Sometimes we can find a sale.

  11. B, I would call the number on the letter at 6:30 CST and you'll get right through. They will verify your account with a few questions about your 2015 tax return, especially any 1099 payers and amounts so have them handy. Takes a few minutes. Good luck, The other B.. Merry Christmas, Bill

  12. I'm going to bet it's Ok. There are probably other people who never registered with eservices. I only used it once or twice when they used to let us enter POAs. Merry Christmas!

  14. I don't audit, current or past years or prior preparer. But, I have to read the prior returns of a new client to see if they have a capital loss, NOL, how many times they took the AOC, who the partners/shareholders/beneficiaries are on 1065s/1120Ss/1041s, whether the person sitting at my desk has been the tax matters partner/executor, compare year-to-year to give me clues what might be missing, get the EIN of the childcare provider, are paying back that homeowner's credit, did they already use up the lifetime energy credit, get depreciation schedules, what was their state refund/did they itemize/compute how much is taxable so looking at prior year AMT, and on and on. I'm not looking for mistakes. I'm looking for information to prepare the most complete and accurate returns for my client this year.

  15. It would never happen, but I am so tired of being the unpaid auditor for the IRS that I dream of all professional preparers deciding one year that they just aren't going to put up with this nonsense and quitting. I don't think the system can get along without us anymore, and I would love to have a strike to force the IRS to acknowledge that. Aren't any of our professional organizations doing anything to fight the IRS on these onerous due diligence requirements? If I ask my client about their circumstances, I should not have to make them prove their living arrangements and their children's living arrangements to me. Just my rant for the day.
