  1. We were very lucky that the forecast to only have about an inch. ONE inch that's already melted off the driveway. We were between the large part of the storm and the other part to our west. My husband is very disappointed to not use the snowblower in the wind. /s
  2. The military i.d. card is presented to gain access to benefits like Tricare, commissaries and exchanges. You could ask for a copy of that. Jack asked about active military, but for anyone else reading and wondering about veterans, vets that are enrolled in the VA health care program now receive a health insurance card. Those new cards started being issued in Feb 2014.
  3. If the edit was because your "(c )" turned into a copyright symbol, it's because it needs a space after the letter 'c' and before the closing parenthesis to display properly on this forum. The same thing happens with 'b' and without the space, it turns into .
  4. Yeah, Jack, I'm not slamming ATX either because so many of their other worksheets are well-designed and so easy to use that it really did take me by surprise.
  5. Good luck to all of those north and east of me. I am breathing a big sigh of relief that our total accumulation has been downgraded to the 5-8" range without the blizzard warnings. Earlier models predicted 2.5 times than that for us. I haven't watched the updates this morning but husband heard that the Boston area is to have hurricane force winds of over 75 mph!
  6. No, I used one of those about 20 years ago and know how they work, and how they have extensive interview features to help the user along. They aren't bad programs and serve many people well, but those aren't the type of clients I currently have, or that I want to market and expand into. I'm also not worried about any of my clients leaving me to self-prepare their own returns. Also, I don't base my pricing on outsiders' costs, whether it be from these self-prep programs or the big box outfits of HRB or JH.
  7. Yes, Rita, it might. I watched that ATX video for the ACA input that I'd posted for someone else, and I was surprised that the worksheet didn't have a checkbox or dropdown to auto-fill the name or to auto-fill all of those boxes if no coverage for all 12 months.
  8. You must manually enter the household income. ATX does not calculate this automatically. Included on the ATX site in the Education section of MyATX, there is a very helpful video under ATX ACA that shows basic input for the 8965. Click where it says ATX ACA and then the red play icon to watch the video.
  9. I thought Marie was asking about the repair reg/capitalization elections.
  10. IF that is the fact pattern then I'd agree, but the OP stated in both of her posts that the employer coverage started on Sept 1st, the first day of the month following the 60-day waiting period, so this person did not have coverage for any day in August.
  11. In an earlier topic, Pacun mentioned that it is possible to e-file a return without having box 61 checked. ATX will give a 'yellow' cautionary warning but not a red one, and so the e-file will transmit. I posted this in General Chat because it is more about the processing of returns and not really any sort of question about the ACA itself. According to the ATX blog earlier this month, for returns that are totally "silent" as to the ACA, meaning that box 61 is blank and no form 8965 or 8962 is included, the IRS will pull the return for error resolution and any refund will be delayed. If this is an ERC or Fee Collect return, the preparer's fees will not be collected if the IRS chooses to mail the refund as a paper check later, rather than as a direct deposit.
  12. Pacun is correct, and I was in error when I stated the coverage gap could be 3 months and meet that exemption from the penalty. Sec 5000A and all the other places I've looked all state "less than 3 months". I found an example on the IRS website and after the words "less than 3 months", in parathesis it said "(for example January, February)"
  13. Hi Elizabeth, welcome to the forum and please accept my apology for Jack's less than helpful post. Easytax gave you the answers to your questions. For a good guide that may help you get started with the ACA for 2014 returns, you might consider using Pub 5157. It is the IRS guide covering the ACA for VITA preparers and is in a lesson-style format with the more common situations that we'll encounter this season due to the ACA.
  14. I don't know the answer, but this site might help with the question of whether or not the student health insurance is minimum essential coverage, or might help you to determine the follow up questions to ask your client about the particular student policy and its coverage. http://www.acha.org/Topics/Affordable_Care_Act/FAQs_for_IndividualCoverageClassification.cfm#Q2 Also, there is an exception to the penalty for a gap in coverage of up to 3 months. With these in mind, it might be that your client won't have a penalty, but you have to ask the questions about that student insurance.
  15. It might be covered under Circ 230, sec 10.22 Diligence as to Accuracy. It doesn't specifically mention needing the actual W-2 though, and a return can be prepared after a certain date (I think it's 2/15?) by filing form 4852 if a W-2 can't be obtained from the employer. These pertain specifically to e-filed returns, and there is similar language somewhere for paper-filed returns as well. Page 46 of pub 1345 - A Provider must not advertise that individual income tax returns may be electronically filed prior to the Provider’s receipt of Forms W-2, W-2G and1099-R, as the Provider is generally prohibited from electronically filingreturns prior to receipt of Forms W-2, W-2G, and 1099-R. Advertisements must not imply that the Provider does not need Forms W-2, W-2G and1099-R, or that it can use pay stubs or other documentation of earnings to e-file individual income tax returns. Form 14157 - Complaint: Tax Preparer has a check box for E-file complaints that includes "(e-filed returns using pay stub, non-commercial software or Free File without properly securing taxpayer's)" and page 3 of that form's instructions: E-File A preparer: Filed a return electronically using a last payroll stub or a leave and earnings statement without waiting for the official Form W-2 from the employer. Return preparers are generally prohibited from filing a return prior to receipt of Forms W-2, W-2G, and 1099-R. Used non-commercial software to prepare returns that appear self prepared by the taxpayer and is not including his or her name, PTIN, or firm name. Similarly, the preparer used the “Free File” program to prepare and file tax returns for clients. For more information on Free File, visit www.irs.gov/freefile. - Filed a return electronically without securing taxpayer’s signature on Form 8879 (e-File Signature Authorization).
  16. PLEASE NOTE, to try to get this topic back to its subject of using Turbo Tax Online without a hijack of it going into a discussion about a totally different product, and to give the ATX-partnered product a full discussion its own, I've started a new topic and moved a post with questions about it. Thanks. Here's a direct link to that topic: ATX with Toll-Free Tax Infoline Plus (TFTI+)
  17. I moved MAM's post above and started this discussion to avoid further hijacking of another topic. This add-on product that ATX offers keeps your clients informed on the status of their tax return and refund through automatic text messages and e-mail alerts. See the quote below for a link to that product's page.
  18. I'm using Word 2010 but the envelope function should work the same. When I prepared the envelopes I currently have as a saved doc, I went to the block where the return address is entered and used the "enter" key to space down a few spaces until I was down to where I wanted the phrase to appear. I used large capitals in bold and split the phrase into 2 lines so it didn't run over into the name or mailing address. If you've already saved the envelope, you can add the phrase by clicking at the end of the last line of the return address and doing the same thing - space down.

    ACA EXEMPTION

Well it's working for me in IE11 now but Firefox doesn't display the premiums. It goes to a page within the Marketplace having links to the 8965 and big buttons near the top to print or save as a pdf, and clicking those causes an error on the page with no other display, and that is totally different than when I tried it before. My Firefox settings must be blocking the premiums being displayed. At least I can get to the information with the other browser.
  20. I agree with Ron that those payments are part of the purchase price and you have an installment sale. Since you won't know the final price until the end, you'll have an adjustment of the final price in the last year. Is there a limit on the number of years these payments will continue, or was 2014 the only year? One reason a sale may be structured like this is because the purchaser will not want to pay full price if customer retention could be an issue, but may not be the case here since it is a son that presumably worked in the business.
  21. Agree with both of you. If the realtor received a 1099 for commission he didn't received, he should either take that issue up with whatever entity paid him to have the form corrected, or he should report the gross amount and take the discount as a business expense. The discount he allowed your client in no way falls within the definition of any payment that would require the issuance of a 1099 to your client. That doesn't even make sense.

    ACA EXEMPTION

Easytax, have you been successful using that link on the Marketplace? I tried to plug in some hypothetical facts there when someone first linked to it and again just now, and I keep getting a message that my family information is incomplete, to go back and edit the entries. Maybe it is something specific only to DE or the particular zip code that I used that isn't working; I didn't try any others. Anyone else having luck?
  23. Eric, many have offered their services, and if you don't feel the need or comfort for all that would entail, please know that we would also be happy to help with any questions you may have.
  24. Lion, it looks like you are doing work there while still being orderly. Many years ago when I worked for a firm, I kept everything cleaned up and put away in my file cabinet all the time except for the thing I was working on, and more than a few times I was asked if I really did much work or was busy because it was too neat and tidy! That habit came early in my career because I once called a client's wife for additional documents, a doctor's wife, that accused me of losing some of their office's pension plan statements. Later she admitted that she found them at her home and brought them in, but she never apologized to our office or for blaming me, and she knew her accusation almost cost me my job.
