  1. I'd like to know why you switched from Ultra Tax? Their tech support is excellent. Drake, from why I understand, does not have a toll free number for tech support - and I depend on tech support all season long. I personally feel that UlraTax is very similar to Lacerte (I have seen demos). I'm a five year user of Ultra Tax and at this point I refuse to switch-I came in when MicroVision sold out to them They way I figure it - saving due to price alone is not worth switching - UT produces a quality product, tech support has never turned me down, it has features very much like Prosystemfx without paying fx price.
  2. I have a client who comes from the UK, that now resides as a citizen in the U.S. I use the 12/31 values provided by the various exchange rate services. The 12/31/07 conversion rate I used was 1.98 from British pounds to U.S. dollars.
  3. You need to complete Form IT-203B, Schedule A, to make the allocation of "days worked".
  4. So long as you'll be sharing program data on this site, why not also consider TTA's UltraTax? I haven't seen that discussed. I've been using it now for 5 years. It's certainly not cheap - but it's a lot less than CCH's Prosystemfx, and probably comparable to Intuit's Lacerte.
  5. I wouldn't ignore it because it's possible that it could be a Schedule A itemized deduction.
  6. I would make every effort to obtain a W-2 BEFORE preparing Form 4852, and document each attempt with a written record of dates, conctact names, phone numbers, etc. While I've never had to do a 4852 while e-fiing (I did one many years ago-no e-filing then) I don't know the effect of preparing a 4852.
  7. Yes - we have them here also in the New York area. I don't really mind their uniforms. They're harmless. The group I really detest is the Jackson-Hewitt camp that isn't embarrassed to advertise their service by making a mockery of the ambulance service and humiliating the sick man lying on the stretcher - the ambulance driver boasts of getting her refund loan instantly from a last paystub - and the medical technician attending to the sick guy on the stretcher taking the oxygen mask off and putting it on himself as he is in desperate need because he didn't get his refund quick enough through another preparer.
  8. It's conceivable that the client, although the full state tax refund was received, didn't obtain the full tax benefit from it, depending upon the other itemized deductions. Your software program should be able to produce a worksheet schedule providng that computation. Simply because a refund was received, doesn't automatically it's all fully taxable.
  9. I also like the new look. Keep up the good work.
  10. I use UltraTax from Thomson. I previously used MicroVision (TaxRelief) - but 5 years ago sold out to Creative Solutions. I felt that rather than simply price shop - stay with a big guy - because sooner or later the small guys will be eaten up by the big guys - so the price savings is only temporary.
  11. Folks - I'm NOT an ATX user - but I saw a post on another board that ATX is closing up shop (or dramatically cutting support staff) and moving down south, so that those of you who depend upon specific support service you've been accustomed to, will now change. The message was posted by an ex-ATX user. Don't know how true this is - but I suggest you check this out and prepare yourselves before the start of tax season.
  12. In all the years I've been in practice (since 1976), I only had a handful ask about credit cards Back in the 1980s I did have it for a couple of years - not many took advantage of it - so I decided to discontinue it, and never have reintroduced it. At that time, the reason I did offer it, was to avoid extremely delinquent paying clients - of which there were only a handful. To me it wasn't worth the administrative overhead costs to continue with it.
  13. I would consider it Fundraising Revenue.
  14. Read the rules of Section 351 incorporations. That would give you the answers you're looking for.
  15. Can an S Corporation file electronically after 9/15? If so - what is the acceptable date IF ANY?
  16. The husband lived in NJ as his main place of abode for the majority of the year. The NJ house is up for sale - but hasn't been sold by year end. Until he officially finds a permanent place of abode in Fla., he's still considered a full year NJ resident. I have never had a situation where living in NJ as a resident for most of the year without formally establishing another residence somewhere else entitles you to part year resident status.
  17. So long as you're not dealing with a domestic (divorce/separated parents) issue, the fact that the husband resided in Florida the latter part of the year - doesn't detract from the fact that he's a New Jersey resident. He's still obligated to file as a full year New Jersey resident.
  18. One thing that hasn't been mentioned, is , if CASH is deposited in excess of $ 10,000 at any one time, or more than $ 10,000 in cash disbursed in any one transaction, there is a form that the institution receiving or paying it MUST complete and send to IRS.
  19. Why can't the bank, that knows the identity (Social Security Number) identify the person to the IRS or law enforcement officials to attempt to recoup this money?
  20. I suggest all of you go to all your daily e-mail boards- This afternoon IRS has instituted a NEW policy where ALL e-file providers must provide on an excel spreadsheet a whole mess of data - BY AUGUST 9TH (gives us all a whole lot of time) Otherwise they're threatening us that we can't e-file. Between 4-5PM this afternoon - I got like SIX e-mails pertaining to this. The purpose of this whole thing is for IRS to more easily catch phishing and e-fraud.
  21. I agree with Pacun. A SFR-substitute for return (which is what IRS sent) is NOT an actual filing. So you have to file an original return before filing an amended return. I would attach a copy of the documentation of payments on the SFR to take credit for the amount already paid for the year.
  22. As a prior poster stated - this appears to be a not-for-profit entity that is supposed to file a Form 990 or 990-EZ - depending upon the circumstances. A 990 filing due due 4.5 months after the close of the fiscal year. The organization most probably is supposed to also file with the State Attorney General. I would ask your contact person not only for the notices the IRS sent, but also a copy of the latest 990 filing - regardless of which year, in order to correlate the notices with the circumstances. I have some experience with 990 filings, as I have some tax exempt organizations, and as well, many years ago was involved in the filing of a 990 for a fraternal lodge.
  23. I agree with Maribeth. The subrental is part of the self-employment activity and in effect reduces the monthly rent the translator pays the landlord. I had an audit many years ago of a Schedule C client who owned a building (a residence that was converted to a physician's office). Top floor was residential rental. I took all the building expenses on the Schedule C - but separately reported the top floor rental on Schedule E. I found out that one of the reasons for the audit was showing rental income by itself on the E, with no corresponding expenses. Was told by the auditor - should have included on the C.
  24. In order to answer this question properly, you need to contact the proper authority that grants the school its license to operate - state education department, the church that its affiliated with, attorney general. A response from this board without knowing more facts is virtually impossible.
