Partnership Returns Never Filed - How far back to go?
Margaret CPA in OH replied to gfizer's topic in General Chat
I agree with you, Jainen, regarding the need to "properly file her 2009 return". I think it will be a real challenge to get the proper figures without having the prior year figures carried forward for balance sheet purposes, at least. -
Congratulations on the pending wedding! My only child, my son, got married last May. It was such a very big deal in our lives and so exciting. It cost more than I could imagine but was well worth it in time, energy and money. And we don't miss it now, for sure. They bought a house 3.7 miles from here so I get the granddog about every other week and am so anxious to have grandchildren if and when. Keep us up to date with the plans. At least I am interested! And good luck!

Thanks, Jack, for following up. I no longer have any nonresidents that have to file so wasn't sure about the current situation. I do know some other states do not allow, yet, part year residents or nonresidents to efile.

Thanks! I printed it out and it goes on my wall of funnies - prominently. The next time someone even hints, well, you know. By the way, my part timer had her daughter enlarge and print out that dependent defined flow chart from tax-charts.com. If you think the 8 1/2 x 11 is confusing, the enlarged 30 x 30 version boggles the mind. I'm looking for a great place to hang it.

I assume that you are talking about the IRA/Roth worksheet. Does it show the maximum amount that can be contributed on the Contributions tab? Form 8606 is only for Nondeductible Contributions (Part I), Conversions (Part II) and Distributions (Part III). If the contribution was nondeductible, there would be no change on the 1040. If deductible, the worksheet will show the amount allowed.

Ohio does not have a signature form for efiling. In the past, nonresidents were unable to efile but I don't see that in the current year instructions. I hope it works for your client!

Gail is correct, according to Church and Clergy Tax Guide. In fact, I don't believe the housing allowance is ever included in the W-2 wages, rather is an item in Box 14 although not always listed.

Check received in 09, 1099R received in 10
Margaret CPA in OH replied to mcb39's topic in General Chat
This is very interesting, indeed. I just wonder how "the funds would be made available ... without restriction" when the check was not even prepared until January. Would the client have been able to appear at the office and demand the cash in December? Scratching head here... -

Happy birthday to your daughter, my sympathies to you and I always file prior year returns to the current year address and on the envelope write Form 1040, Tax Year xxxx. I can't easily find where this is the gospel but I also have not had issues with doing like this. I also send certified mail return receipt. Maybe someone will chime it with the gospel.

Also note that the instructions for Lines 1 and 8, Column (- Date Acquired state, "If you sold a block of stock (or similar property) that you acquired through several different purchases, you may report the sale on one line and enter "VARIOUS" in column (. However, you still must report the .... For Column ©- Date Sold Enter in this column the date you sold the asset.... This has been invaluable in grouping the dividends reinvested for several months or years and all sold on the same date. I have listed each sale date but used the Various purchase date and had several returns successfully efiled and accepted this year and last year with no 'love letters.' I think the intent is clear. At least in my mind, what there is left of it!

Now Lion, we try to keep the romance here between Catherine and Booger. I'm not sure how many liaisons this board can manage. Please control your lust...Besides, I want him for myself!

Yes, thanks for sharing and isn't it great to have such wonderful tech support? What a team!

Thanks again to all. It has been a most lovely day. Two beautiful bouquets, two lovely tops, a great German chocolate cake at the dive center, a harmonica and guitar rendition of Happy Birthday - what more could anyone possible desire? Oh, and this great board of internet friends, thanks again!

When I have had to do that, I was contacted by phone in one case and by email in another but your mileage may vary. In both cases, the reply was within that day. I'm guessing the previous discussion here didn't resolve the issue. Good luck and thanks for the wishes!

Thank you! It has been a beautiful day already with a lovely bouquet, cards, gift, sunshine... And dinner tomorrow cooked by my son and his wife. I can't believe I'm 64 but my husband still needs me, still feeds me... Life is good, even during tax season!

NOL Form - Not approved for filing?
Margaret CPA in OH replied to BulldogTom's topic in General Chat
Tom, I get that message every time, too, but when I complete the worksheet, with no NOL as a result, it isn't a problem. Now, I haven't yet had anyone with a NOL to carry back or forward so honestly don't know what I would do if/when that happens. It is annoying, though, isn't it? Have you completed a worksheet that does result in a NOL for a client and it flows through? -

'Tis only fittin' that we begin this day with a wee bit o' Irish humor... An aging man lived alone in Ireland. His only son was in Long Kesh Prison and he didn't know anyone who would spade his potato garden. The old man wrote to his son about it and received this reply: "FOR GOD'S SAKE, POP, please don't spade up that garden! That's where I buried me GUNS!!!" At 4am the next morning, a dozen policemen showed up and dug up the entire garden, but didn't find any guns. Confused, the man wrote to his son telling him what happened and asking him what to do next. His son's reply was: "Aye, noow ya can plant your potatoes, can't ya?"
