  1. KlfyhaM, I would definitely call the rep/sales folks for this. You may have better luck calling tech support first to see if you can get help restoring and, if not, get a case number to support your claim to not have to pay a second time. I do a handful of clients not in the 3 states I have in the 1040 package and would be, well, quite upset if I had to pay a second time for a PPR after a software crash. Fortunately I have never had a crash in over 20 years (jinxing myself?) but would be adamant about not paying twice for something not my fault. Good luck!
  2. So, you submitted an amended return to the State without filing a regular return? No, the state received only the original state return. As mentioned, I hold the state returns until federal is accepted. I received information after filing the federal which warranted an amended federal return. After filing the amended federal return, the original state return was then filed. As an original state return had not been previously filed, it was not appropriate to file an amended state return.
  3. FDNY, your humor is so appreciated! Fortunately I have suffered very little in all the years (since 1997), I have used ATX. Luck? Good computer? Few problem clients? Stars in alignment? No idea but, for me, it ain't broke so I'm not fixing it and meets my needs. I like how it works and, for me, the price is right. I did begin with CCH Pro something back in the mid-eighties when I first worked at a firm but that was filling out the sheets, sending away for coding and, well, ancient technology. Now this program is like my comfy, broken in slippers.
  4. I had a situation whereby I had submitted the federal return and, as always, held the state return. In the interim, client provided additional information so I chose Amend return on the by now accepted federal return. Nothing actually changed on the state return so it was not amended. I submitted the 1040X and after acceptance, submitted the state return. Client has copies of everything as do I in pdf form. That was in February or so. I've heard nothing and do not expect to either.
  5. Another option to consider, if you actually like ATX otherwise, is to downgrade to the 1040 package and just pay the PPR cost for the partnerships, about $35 each. I did that and have saved a lot of money while still keeping the program that I know. I get just 3 states and have clients in 7 states so pay for the extra states but, ummm, build it into their invoice. I bill by time and it does take time to add money to the account and download the extra state/form. My renewal for 1040 is $843, a far cry from the MAX cost.
  6. Gail is correct. Interest and capital gains are not taxable to 501(c)(3) organizations. They are not considered business income unless directly related to unrelated (purpose of exemption) business.
  7. I pay $9 monthly for Verifyle and consider it a really good investment. There are some quirky user issues with folks not so techy but most all still have managed quite well. I will keep it throughout the year although it's possible to stop and start. I want to have the capability year round.
  8. Patti, thank you for posting such a heartfelt message. Many, probably most, of us here have similar feelings and experiences, even some losses. We try to support everyone in the good times but especially in the hard times. Even if you don't post often, feel free to always keep lurking and do chime in sometimes. Some of us have had the great opportunity to meet in person and loved it. Perhaps you will have that available to you somehow. If not, we are here, many of us year round. Keep in touch.
  9. I'm so happy for you all. Especially since I will not have the opportunity to be a grandparent. Disappointing for sure, but my son's life is not under my direction any longer. So I get to vicariously love and appreciate all the little ones that come into my life near and far. Hoping to get back to MA next year so maybe I can meet you again and watch you be the best grandmother ever, Catherine. Feel free to send any pictures to me at any time via PM.
  10. Congratulations to the whole family! She is a beauty and smart too! We know because both run in the family. Enjoy this precious love.
  11. Ag? Since you seem happy it must be your happy place so enjoy!
  12. Did the taxpayer file as single in 2019? Is the income high enough for 2020 to reduce the amount by half? It does seem odd assuming you followed the worksheet and input 0 received in both places. I had one like that but it worked just right.
  13. I am not familiar with a SSN as a Payer's PTIN. A PTIN is a preparer's number issued by IRS beginning with a P followed by 8 digits. Maybe I don't understand your question.
  14. Those clients are now ex-clients. I am not interested in this new and exciting area of tax. Feel free to offer your services and I will be happy to make referrals.
  15. One of my clients never received her PIN by mail but I helped her set up her own account. She was able to receive it through that method so we could file her return.
  16. I don't know about 'normal' but understand your feeling. I just completed the return for a client who sold off all her stock and withdrew all her IRA funds, etc. to become eligible for Medicaid. The cash went to the daughter and son, of course. But the client died in March unexpectedly and now the estate owes several thousand dollars. Daughter and attorney of course state that there is no money in the estate to pay the tax. I know its legal but.....
  17. I certainly won't chew you out and am interested in learned responses. Neurosurgeon client decided early 2020 to form LLC for 'real estate investment and creative services.' She has now a rental property and lots of other 'business' expenses not really related to the rental but no business activity. How does an LLC have both Sch. C and Sch. E? Is your client an LLC or just sole prop.?
  18. In my engagement letter, I stipulate a deadline by which time all, and I mean ALL, data must be received in order to timely file. If this isn't met, I caution that I may extend their returns at my discretion. It depends on my workload and how I feel. If I do extend, well, that costs extra, but I don't charge extra for preparing the return. I bill time. As it happens, many of the late comers tend to email and drip documents in bit by bit. Sooooo, every email I read and respond to and every document I address, well, I'm billing time. At my age and situation, I will not go to extraordinary lengths to complete a return when my conditions are not met. I'm fortunate with the majority of my clients and not afraid to lose one that doesn't play well with me. YMMV
  19. Ummm, I'm now with Judy on this having seen the way to go through Line 2 on SE. I tried it on a return and it flows just right. 7.65% is the reduction for the SE tax calculation so comes off Sch. 1 Line 14. It works and thanks again to Judy for ferreting this out. If this ever arises in my practice, I would not use Sch. C. I would follow exactly what works on Sch. SE. Good exercise!
  20. So sorry you aren't feeling so great. And yet isn't it interesting how some of these things just bug us and we can't let go. ATX does have a jump from Line 2 for adjustments up or down and blank spaces where one could input, I don't know, embassy wages or something more erudite. Than it does actually discount by 7.65% for the tax and half goes to Sch. 1 II line 14 as it all should. Once again, Judy comes through, even in her discomfort, to lead us to the right path. Thanks as always, Judy! Now feel better soon. I know I am delighted to have learned so much from this exercise!
  21. As the form specifically addressed this situation and had a space for the code, it was easy enough to type it in. All good.
  22. Right, I read that but it was the 'making the software do this' that tripped me up. And even then, if hand preparing, which line does one fudge and answer less than truthfully? Again, happy I am not faced with this. There should be easier accommodations for such situations especially given Pacun's litany of the number of possible employees/not self employed required to file SE in this situation. Good luck with your solution, FDNY!
  23. I had the time, belt and suspenders, figured it wouldn't hurt, etc. I just hope it doesn't take years for this to be resolved but now out of my hands.
  24. Judy, thanks for the links but I didn't see specific ways to address compensation on a W-2. Which leads to Pacun's statement to report on Sch. C. However, unless the W-2 shows statutory employee and can be listed/input as such on Sch. C, I don't see this as a solution, at least using software that has restrictions. I'm glad this isn't my client and problem but always good to learn about different wrinkles in our tax and reporting system.
