  1. I choose.... Election = choice.
  2. At the firm, 485 extensions. In my personal practice, 17 extensions.
  3. Semantics. Not relevant to the situation being discussed. Schedule C business. NOT a RENTAL. Trying to redefine the tax laws does not change the tax laws.
  4. You will hate Drake. 2013 tax year I used both. I will not go back to Drake for any reason. Drake is not intuitive enough for me. 2013 I raised my fees 25%. (not yet to the 80-85% mark Tom used) I have 200+ clients. I had 1 client complain and two ask. 2014 I raised my fees an additional 16%. Still not to the 80-85% benchmark. I may have lost a few clients, but have gained several new clients that didn't even blink at my new prices. More income than 2013. When we price our professional services at Wal-Mart prices we hurt our entire industry and other tax professionals. I have chosen to stop doing that. I am now an IRS licensed professional with 18 years experience and have decided if my prices are the reason some left, I am not losing anything. In the last two seasons I have had a total price increase of 45%. If I lose some customers, I have less work to do and make more money. The concept truly does work.
  5. I need some of this to put on my garden!! It will last until the 2nd audit that goes bad...
  6. Employers are paying "contractor" wages when the person should be an employee to: Not pay 7.65% FICA Not pay Unemployment Insurance (breaking state employment laws) Not pay Workman's Compensation Insurance (breaking state employment laws) Not pay someone to do the payroll reporting It has nothing to do with payroll being stressful. It is all about the money.
  7. Total maximum size for all pdf attachments is 10Mb. Use a different setting on your scanner. 200X200 dpi grayscale is plenty.
  8. Tell the parents to apply for a new SS# for the adopted child. I was of the mind that the adoption agency involved would have told them this. Problem solved.
  9. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8868.pdf
  10. The IRS is ONLY checking 1095-A recipients. It appears they are checking ALL of them. All others are not being checked for tax year 2014. Will be different for tax year 2015.
  11. The IRS posted this same information about a month ago. It was also in the ATX blog.
  12. Tell him that you are sure that his ex appreciates his gift. Deductibility ends when legal obligation ends. This is established by the divorce decree.
  13. Nothing changes above 5 children. Use 5 and see how it goes.
  14. Short answer... NO.
  15. Client will need to call the IRS at the number shown on the "Where's My Refund" page.
  16. How long since the return was filed?
  17. 82 year old client gifted her farm to her 3 children in 2014. $1.3M value. Her attempt to keep the wealth out of the hand of Medicaid if she goes into a home. For the record, she did not call me before the attorney did it for her. Gift tax return filed appropriately. How should I treat disposition of depreciated assets? They went with the farm to the children. Sale on 4797 for $0? I am just brainstorming here. Never crossed this bridge before.
  18. Those are the ones that burned me. They didn't show up next year. Try asking for those payment terms at the grocery store, your hairdresser or a restaurant.
  19. Burned twice. Cash, Check or Credit/Debit card. No tickey no laundry. "IN GOD WE TRUST" All others pay on delivery.
  20. Why enter the 1099-A? Sell the asset using the figures as I directed.
  21. Who knew they made Girl Scout uniforms for full grown women....
  22. This must be treated as a sale of the rental and reported on 4797. Not on line 21. Use the amount of debt written off as the sale price. Recapture all appropriate depreciation. FMV has NO PLACE in this calculation. There is usually a taxable capital gain. This is NOT forgiveness of debt, and cannot be changed by bankruptcy. When the client receives a 1099-C, then deal with the debt forgiveness. The 1099-A means that the client sold his property to the bank for the amount remaining on the mortgage.
  23. Because they sold at a loss, they do not owe any further repayment. Follow form 5405. Save yourself time and paperfile. The IRS database is messed up in that area and will reject it.
  24. Found a box of Thin Mints!!
