I agree XP by itself is not the culprit. Admittedly, I am running standalone, but my old XP SP3 machine with only 2 Gig of RAM is opening the program, loading returns and printing returns only slightly slower than last year. There is a slight but noticable delay moving between entry fields. The only thing that is significantly slower is the loading of forms in the print manager, takes about 3 times as long as last year.

I have been using Firefox as my primary browser for 3 or 4 years. For the last year I have been using a cloud based Acounting & Payroll SaaS which outputs everything that needs to be printed as a PDF file, which is opened in Adobe then printed or saved. Release 19.0 of Firefox has a new feature called "Built In PDF Viewer" which is intercepting all of my PDF files in low quality graphics, looks like a print screen. I haven't been able to find a way to turn the feature off. Therefore I thought would go back to the previous version 18.0 which I found at at site called oldapps.com. My only question is should I uninstall the current version first before I download and install the older version or will the new install of the older version replace the new version?

It happened to me once, I deleted the return. rolled it over again, then it opened fine.

ATX is suggesting this as temporary fix for 3 or 4 different problems related to corrupted efiles and inability to open returns after creating efiles. For whatever it's worth: bets, You need to verify that that you have Version 135 or higher on the EFINFO form, right click on the form and the version info is at the bottom. If below version 135, you need to update forms, open the return again and check the version. Also, click on the Support menu, About box then click on the Version Info about 8 down is EfileRules.xml that needs to be 12.27 or higher. If not, then close the program, delete the efilesrules.xml located at C:ProgramDataCCH Small Firm ServicesATX2012 (win7..if XP C:Documents and SettingsAll usersApplication DataCCH Small Firm ServicesATX2012). When you update again, the rules file should update properly. Open application back up and verify the EfileRules.xml has been updated ATX MarilynB What's unclear to me is do you redownload 12.9 or do you have wait for 12.10?

There was a reply on the ATX board today from one of the ATX posters that some of the efile related problems were due to a corrupted efiles rules file. Then they gave instructions for deleting the corrupted contents. What wasn't clear to me ishow long it will be before they have a revision available, since this is part of the program not a form.

ATX has acknowledged they have a problem and are working on it. However it might not be fixed until the 12.10 update, early next week ???

However, I was playing around in program and found a fix that is not very convenient. I have a server and two workstations. When I open the return on one workstation that is the only workstation I can work the file on. So what I did was open the return on the workstation I originally opened the file on and exported the return to my desktop. *I went to computer that could not open return (..this part may not matter) and imported the return from desktop. ATX created a copy with the imported return. I opened the copy and deleted the original. All my work that was previously done is still in there and I can work in it from both workstations. *I does matter. You have to import from a separate workstation than the one you created the import from

Jack, I found this reply to the exact same problem you have. Re: COULD NOT ACCESS "FAM" CLIENT FOLDER A way to to get into the return for now is to create a folder in your FAMData path, which should be in appdatat (either ProgramData or Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication Data depending on the OS) CCH Small Firm ServicesATX2012FAMDataData. The folder name should match the value in the Error message. We The rest of the message just says we they're working on it.

Jack, I remember seeing a post or two about this problem on the ATX board. but don't remember the resolution. However here is something you can try. You can still restore deleted returns. I just did this. Delete one of these returns. Under Return Manager, go to the Restore Function, select the return you just deleted, the system has your last 5 backups of each client, pick one of the backups, restore and see if you can open it. There are some posts on the ATX board that say that they had to do exactly that, remove these extra dependents in order to correct the number of dependents being claimed.

I just rolled over my first return today. The preparer info rolled over but not into the return. Then I went into preparer preferences and selected the preparer info to be applied. Then the preparer info rolled over with all the rest of returns the I rolled over today (about 15 returns).

I had a very similar situation last year and I started out heading in the same direction as you. However since it was a rental it ended up generating a capital loss. Question, is this a straight foreclose? Has the foreclosure finalized and title passed. Sometimes it takes forever for the mortgage co or loan processor to finish the paperwork. You may end up with a 2013 transaction.

About a dozen posters on the ATX board are reporting that they are able to open various different types of returns that they weren't able to open since the 12.8 update.

According a recent post in the ATXblog by Kimmie, they have identified what is making the program crash when trying to open a return since the 12.8 update. They have developed and tested the fix and it is now in Quality Control for stability testing and packaging. See the thread titled "Same Problem Again", find Kimmie's post and follow the link. It was unclear to me whether this fix was intended for network installs only or both standalone & network installs ??? KImmie has now posted that the update, scheduled for 5:00PM EST is for both standalone & networked installs. There is a scary last line. "Tech support will not be able to assist with the opening of any returns that have crashed since the 12.8 update" !

This is the 4th or 5th post I have read about the poor programming decisions that ATX made with respect to reprogamming this software. All of these posts taken together seem to hang together and make sense. The conclusions I have drawn from reading these posts are (1) ATX will gradually get the bugs fixed and the program will become useable, (2) ATX will gradually reduce the peformance problems, but slowness in opening and loading will remain to be a serious issue, (3) ATX will really struggle trying to get the program to work properly on Networks and more than likely will never get it to work satisfactorily. The big question is, Does ATX try to keeping fixing a flawed program design or do they make some major changes so that the program performs the way we as practitioners need it to perform? Film at 11 or in our case next year!

Back when the early discount date for ATX was July 31st (pre CCH), I paid early. Ever since CCH took over and moved the discount earlier for several years in a row, I stopped taking the discount. and paid in December. This year I waited until January, made a down payment so I could download the Payroll Compliance Program and agreed to pay the remaining balance next Tueday assuming today's update fixes enough problems. It's unlikely that I will ever pay early again for a discount.

Error message appears when trying to open any rolled over returns.

If you go to the regular ATX site, log in, go to ATX Communites, go to Software & Hardware, you will a find a very useful thread titled "Workarounds & Solutions" that has over 80 posts from various users of how to address different software problems that we have all encountered with ATX. Normally, when you try to add a form etc that isn't resident on your hard drive, the software prompts you to download the form over the internet?
