  1. Since they were both accepted, you will need to do an amended form for the father. If it is done before April 15, it will actually be treated as a corrected return.
  2. When in the return, go to the add forms list, find and open elections/statements form. On the bottom tab, you will find Blank Statements. Hope that helps.
  3. This community is your best tutorial.
  4. It makes you wonder how the polygamist files his joint return. How does he get all those wives on one return?
  5. Complete the 1099-R worksheet. Under 2a, fill in the amount that was rolled over. Be sure the other information is filled in correctly from the 1099-R. On your 1040, you should see the amount distributed in 16a, with 0 showing in 16b and the word "Rollover" written beside it. Hope that helps. Neil
  6. Ray, I am working on one right now. You should not have "DECD" in the name field. Leave the names as they were previously. The information is put in the filers info section at the bottom of the 1040 page and it carries to the correct place on the 1040.
  7. Thanks Jack. This client lives in Illinois but won $4,000 at an Indiana Riverboat. I found this on the KB: Document ID 807 Tax Year 2005; 2006; 2007 Product E-file, TaxPrep E-filing nonresident/part-year resident state forms -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your ATX tax software supports e-filing for most nonresident and part-year resident state forms, although specific issues may arise depending on the type of return you are preparing. Nonresident and part-year resident state forms we currently do not support for e-filing are AL Form 40NR, IN Form IT-40PNR, KY Form 740-NP, and OK Form 511NR
  8. Does Indiana allowing for efiling the IT40PNR? I can't get the ATX program to establish the efile file correctly. Thanks.
  9. Was his girlfriend also his child? LOL
  10. Form 6847 must be completed if the state requires that the information on the 1099 be forwarded to them after it goes to the federal. If it is not required by the state, then check NO.
  11. The checking account numbers and the savings account numbers are not the same. In my experience, the banks usually go by the account numbers and not by what is checked.
  12. Has anyone had any experience working with clients that sell jewelry through the party plan? A New client came in a few days ago with her box of receipts and a 1099 for $11,000 for selling jewelry as a side job in 2007. She said her supervisor advised her to keep all of her receipts, so she had receipts for merchandise, brochures, etc from the company and a mess of gas receipts. She had bought several pieces of jewelry which she wears during her parties for demonstration purposes. It is jewelry that cannot be sold (buyers purchase the jewelry from the catalogue), but she can gift it if she wants. Otherwise, the jewelry is hers. She thinks the cost of the jewelry should be expensed. I was not sure if that was correct. My first thought was that it should be kept as inventory. Does anyone have an opinion on that? (She also was told by her supervisor that the costs of "tanning" and "nail jobs" to look good for the parties could be expensed. I explained the IRS position on not being able to expense those items). She had no mileage records, but could reconstruct them from the appointment calander she kept. She also used a room at her house exclusively for her business. So I sent her away to gather the information she needed and to add up the receipts she had and bring back to me to complete her returns. Altogether, I spent about 1 hour of my time giving her a basic business 101 class. The next day she called back and wanted to pick up her other forms that she had left with me. She said she had talked to her supervisor and her supervisor advised her to take her business to her (the supervisor's) tax practitioner. She said they would not put her through all that hassle. Does anyone know of a website that can refer me to cites that have arisen from individuals attempting to take personal expenses (tanning, etc.)? Thanks. (by the way, how can I get this print to be larger?)
  13. Client received a 1099-A because the bank forclosed on his house. Box 2 Balance of Principal Outstanding and Box 4 Fair Market Value of property are the same. He was not personally liable. I have not had one of these for awhile. It looks like this is treated as any other sale, so I use Schedule D to record it? Or is there another form that I should use? Thanks.
  14. Bay, Is she the one that had the boob job and took the cost as a business expense because it was a necessity for her job?
  15. I am showing that there are no updates available when I Download the updates. I find it peculiar that there are no updates for 2 days straight at this time of year. Anyone have any insight on this? Thanks. Neil

Does anyone have any new information on this question?
  17. Most recent reply on TheTechGap January 19, 2008 ATX (CCH Small Firm Services) Responds Well there certainly has been a flurry of activity here --- but as one commenter to the original post pointed out "Those of use posting here and over on the unofficial ATX community site represent somewhere between 20-50 users out of 30,000." Having spent considerable time on all sides of this sort of conversation my analysis would be similar. The vast majority of practitioners are busy grinding away on returns with the product delivering as usual. A few others are vocally unhappy. I'm closing the comments on the first post and ending the debate by re-quoting Sr. Vice President Lenny Holt: I wanted to take an opportunity to apologize to those customers who have had trouble accessing ATX support this week. We have been working around the clock to address the reasons for the temporary problems—most of which were the result of the implementation of a new phone system. Call times have been dramatically reduced today and we believe the issues will be completely resolved by the end of day today. We thank you for your patience and regret any problems you have encountered. We appreciate our customers greatly and we are committed to serving you well by offering the products and services that meet your needs. I also want to reassure all of our customers that we are committed to continuing the ATX product line and that we will do everything necessary to deliver a high level of service for you this tax season and in the future. 18. Tom, open the extension form in the return. Click on the ef form and blank out the pins. Create efile, choose extension, and presto. It's done. So easy. Hope that helps. Neil
  19. Everything in and signed and out. Waiting for 6 regular acks and 6 extension acks. Hope to see all accepted in the morning. SIGH!!!
  20. That reminds me of the story about the gentleman that took the "other" blue pill that got stuck in his throat. He had a stiff neck for a week.
  21. I have a client who bought an energy efficient water heater in 2006. I can find only one small reference in the instructions to whether it qualifies for the credit. *Certain electric heat pump water heaters; electric heats pumps; geothermal heat pumps; central air conditioners; and natural gas, proprane, or oil water heaters.* The form itself (Line 5 makes no reference to it? Has anyone had a case like this and how did you treat it? Thanks. Neil
  22. Thom, when you complete the Form 4868, you will also need to complete the 1040 EF Info Form. On the EF Info Form, bottom tab "Payment and Refund". Scroll down and you will find the section to complete for efiling the 4868. Then when you create the efile, you will be asked which file you are creating, including the Federal Extension. Hope that helps. Neil
