  1. The difference is that, because it snows a lot in Caribou, they have snow plows, salt trucks, etc to deal with it. In Georgia, where it only snows once every 10 years, the government can't afford such equipment, so the snow brings work to a halt. I saw on the news that the city of Atlanta has only one snow plow (why they have even one is beyond me) and 5 or 6 trucks to sand the roadways.
  2. Don't use a big word where a diminutive one will suffice.

  4. In these tough economic times many clients may think of switching to QuickBooks as a way of saving money on their monthly accounting fees. The client will still need you to help with filing his taxes. Offer to help set up his QuickBooks so that he gets the information posted to the correct accounts (for a fee, of course). Also remind him that QB is no substitute for years of accounting knowledge and experience. At the least, you can charge him to straighten out his mess at year-end.
  5. I hope you got his name and ID number before he hung up so you can report him.

    PHONEBOT

I'm not familiar with the program, but after seeing your message I looked at their website. It looks like the last update to the program was in 2004 or 2005. With no updates since then, it may not be very useful or well supported.
  7. No, I think that's called "Divine INVENTION"

Taxes12 joined the community today and his only two posts relate to this new provider of ATX software. I wonder who he works for.
  9. I stand corrected, RoyDaleOne. Always glad to learn something new.
  10. RoyDaleOne, I don't understand your sentence in your last post. The original post said the new roof replaced one that was placed in service in 1999. I assumed, since the post did not indicate that it was an allocation of the total purchase price, that this was a roof placed in service in 1999 on a building that was purchased before 1999. If the roof only lasted 9 years, it would have some amount of remaining cost which was "abandoned" when the 1999 roof was replaced. That cost could be written off. Or have I misunderstood the whole question?
  11. If you capitalize the new roof, you can write off any remaining undepreciated cost of the old roof.
  12. How much did Andersen Consulting then bill the chicken for its services?
  13. Gene, I don't know about your AMT on the federal return, but you know that on an Alabama state return with taxable income of any amount you would have a state income tax due. Maybe your computer does have swine flu.
  14. In the program click on options, then preferences, then select forms. Uncheck "Automatically add client letter."
  15. You can tell the program not to roll over the client letter. Then when you add the client letter to the open return, it will add your current year customized letter.
  16. Sounds to me like the counter, doors and bullet proof glass are personal property and the wall is a leasehold improvement with a 39 year life.
  17. Eric, are you sure you don't prepare tax returns? Sounds like you know a lot of the tricks.
  18. The settlement should relate to the loss in value of the whole house, not just the basement.
  19. It was named after that old time TV cowboy the Cisco Kid.
  20. Isn't Sundry the first day of the week?
  21. You could type in "Philadelphia". I have to do that a lot for local tax jurisdictions in Alabama.
  22. Sounds almost like the client I had a few years back. He brought in a copy of his QuickBooks where he had entered transactions for the year. The P & L had two lines: income and expense.
