  1. These guys don't keep their horses long and want to fully deduct when acquired. They also run them in 'claim' races, where the horse can be claimed for whatever price you put on them, if they do well (win?). I took Sch C earnings down to just under 400 so not SE tax. Also had winnings in 4 states so getting the Sch C to a small profit means we don't have to file in those other states. Or, at least, we're not filing those states and if they ever come calling we'll fax them the P&L for that state showing almost no income.
  2. Street name spelled wrong. Business description totally wrong (horse racing business listed as Offices of Lawyers.) Horse assets misspelled as Hourse twice and once as Houre. 7 year life and no 179 on horses. Was told 179 not allowed. Return prepared several weeks after extenders billed signed allowing 3 year life on racehorses. Amending from a 4,288 balance due to a 1,257 refund, plus similar on state. Father and grandfather are in same business. Asked taxpayer why he didn't use their tax pro and was told it's too far away (18 miles). That cocktail is going to taste so good tonight!
  3. There's some good stuff in those instructions! I really should read them more often.
  4. Well, I was half right. Column A should just be the husband but wife doesn't need to file 1040X. Hopefully the IRS employee will zero out the wife's prior return.
  5. I'm going to add this to my list of reasons women should not take their husband's last name.
  6. Large notes are good. Succinct is best. Be considerate of others' time. No one wants to read a long letter.
  7. But that won't match the return that the husband filed. Now that I think of it, you need to do a 1040X for both spouses, showing all zeroes on the correct amount column for the wife. I would put both 1040Xs in small envelopes then put both envelopes in a larger envelope to increase the likelihood that one person will process both returns.
  8. I always have an estate accounting from the lawyer's office showing the income to the estate and just have to back out any amounts from the 1040 that I know are included on the estate accounting. Sometimes that's not possible because you don't have all the monthly statements and often the amounts are too small to be concerned with. And sometimes the lawyer doesn't split it accurately at the date of death and the chips just fall where they may. If the final 1040 has zero tax due to high medical expenses, I don't get too worked up about it, either way.
  9. I prefer the husband first on the return because that's how it is on 99% of my returns and I make less mistakes picking T or S in the various forms. Roll him over and recreate his single return. Then amend him to joint. The IRS will figure out the rest even though the 1040X won't show the correct EIC adjustment.
  10. If he's a manufacturer, he shouldn't be getting 1099s to begin with, and matching 1099s without a detail list of payments from the customer is mostly useless. I'd be much happier with 12 months of reconciled bank statements.
  11. I can only speak to states that I hate doing their tax returns and that list is: Ohio Pennsylvania New Jersey Massachusetts ??? All states are difficult when you only do a few, though. They have additions, subtractions and credits that too easy to miss.
  12. Are all of his sales reported on 1099? None to the general public? Any cash sales? Does cash reconcile? Get all of the bank statements. Do you have the QB data file? Most of our clients have 1099s for only a portion of their sales.
  13. They are now searchable and they do roll over. The only custom field I have now is Year End. We use and search the Status filed for statuses (entered, ready, need, received,...) and it's very helpful.
  14. It would be awesome, but it's not the way they work.
  15. I'm still not clear why one small business can get better prices than another, but I would run it through his "books" so it matches his bank statements.
  16. I thought it would be a good idea to attach it to the return. I mailed the POA to the amended return address. Figured they could get it to where it belongs. Or not. I guess MA DOR really deserves their 1 star ratings that I saw on Yelp or someplace. One guy said he wished he could give zero stars!
  17. Anyone here have experience with a US business hiring a Canadian employee who will live and work in Canada? Should they be paid as a subcontractor? Would we still withhold taxes? TIA!
  18. I've had amazing results with Bowenwork for my sciatica, blood pressure and other things.
  19. Thanks for all your time, Catherine! Yes, I did check that box. I actually liked the form. It was nice and clean and mimicked the IRS 2848, so it was easy to use. But actually filing it is apparently discouraged since there is no address in the instructions.
  20. The export client list only exports the columns you have displayed, and the available columns is a useless list that contains fields no one would ever care about and is missing many fields we would all like access to. Submit an enhancement request.
  21. I get the feeling they don't have a central database of POAs they can easily look up. I'll attach a copy to the amended return. I just want to get a copy of any notices/letters.
  22. Well that sucks. I don't need to talk to anyone right now. Called yesterday and wait time was unacceptable. I guess I'll just mail it in. Thanks!
  23. Form instructions say it can be faxed but provide no fax #s. Taxpayer is out of state now but lived in Franklin, if that matters. Muchas Gracias!
  24. Which fields ATX searches in return manager is a total mystery and we have no options to select/deselect those fields. But I do know two things: I wish it didn't search preparer name and I wish it did search phone #.
