  1. Exactly. I've been to seminars where I didn't learn a thing and I've been to ones where I learned a lot. I prefer the low cost of online courses, plus I use the course materials for reference materials. Online schooling is the way of the future. Even live seminars should be done online to save travel costs, pollution, spread of the flu, etc., and I've done a few live online seminars. They pop up a 'test' to make sure you're still there. Bathroom breaks need to be timed carefully, though.
  2. I started out with eFax about 13 years ago. We use these services for both our faxes and voice mails. The quality of the voice messages on efax was poor and then they got expensive and started billing me a lot for so-called overages, so I switched to MaxEmail. I loved MaxEmail for many years, but then they sold out to... wait for it... EFAX! I didn't think I would stay with efax but they've kept the price I was paying for MaxEmail and we haven't had any quality problems. Just renewed for another year at $84 for fax and voice mail combined. Not sure what a new user would pay. I can view faxes and listen to voice mail from any device by going to their website. I also download voice mail files to client's folders, when they give me any vital information. We have two lines and even when both are in use, you almost never get a busy signal and can send us a fax or leave a voice message.
  3. Finally back in! Got my new letter yesterday. For security purposes, every time you log in the IRS sends a text to your cellphone with a code you have to enter, to make sure it's you. Works for me! I have similar two-factor security set up with financial institutions and Google.
  4. Sounds like you rounded to 100 and the tax changed by a small amount, so the estimates changed. Did you print a PDF of the return at the time you created the efile? Did you later recreate the efile? I've had this happen.
  5. I bought the CPE247 unlimited package on 12/31/17 that gives me unlimited CPE for one year. I've already taken 80 hours and plan on taking at least 40 more before the end of the year.
  6. I use bitlocker. Never had a problem. Can you roll back your windows to the last known good configuration?
  7. McDonald's would install these regardless of the minimum wage. I smell BS. Besides, if your business model depends on poverty level wages, it's not a viable business.
  8. Would your answer be different if he paid someone 100 to haul the equipment to the scrapyard and received full price for the goods? Would you take 100 loss or zero gain/loss?
  9. I've been doing that since 1996.
  10. No, the percentage is just for vacation rentals with more than 14 days personal use.
  11. Searching the official forum it appears to be a corrupted form issue. Try re-downloading all forms for that client. https://support.cch.com/sfs/solution/14202
  12. I've seen the common workbook listed on form update reports but I have no idea what it is. You need to call support.
  13. I was remote supporting a client for QuickBooks this morning, and after I deleted his duplicate transaction, he asks, 'can you check my backup to make sure my QuickBooks data file is being backed up?' First I looked in QB and it was not prompting for a backup every time you close, so I set that up to back up to his documents folder. When you upgrade QB, your backup settings and some print settings (like check font) do not rollover with your data file. Who knows where Intuit even stores that info. QB should walk you through the backup options the first time you close any new or rolled over data file. The I looked at his CrashPlanPro backup settings and it defaulted to backing up only his user profile. Well, QB uses the Public user profile to store the data file so his QB data file was not even being backed up. He had gone an entire year with zero backups of his QB data! Why, after 40+ years of computer use, software companies haven't agreed upon a single location where all data and user configuration settings are stored so backups can be easily done is a testament to our stupidity. I have several programs that store data in the user folders. Some (like ATX) store it in a hidden system folder (Brilliant!) and others store data and/or settings in the program folder. I'm lucky to have been involved with computers since the mid-70s, but the average user shouldn't have to be a detective to find out where their data and settings are stored and then make sure those locations are included in the backups!
  14. You have be careful that the client doesn't include the contribution as a deduction and end up double dipping.
  15. Because of 199A?
  16. Exactly. I know they did this to prevent dishonest people from abusing the tax laws, but this ends up hurting people who are divorcing but can't file jointly, or as HOH or single.
  17. The one Canon scanner I bought, admittedly years ago, did not last two years. I will never buy another one. Can't speak for HP.
  18. Decedents can't do anything and that includes giving gifts. In fact, I believe there's a claw back for gifts made close to the date of death.
  19. Oh well. I already requested a new code. I'll try the old code on the 21st but my guess is I have to wait now.
  20. I guess the programmers never allowed for the possibility that the codes could expire before the letter was mailed, and to just generate a new code to be mailed. The lady told me they had a glitch that delayed the letters and that they're normally mailed in about 5 days.
  21. I requested my code on July 10. Notice the date of the IRS letter and the expiration date at the bottom.

  23. I usually just fire them by billing them much more than usual. Consider it a parting gift.
  24. I just tried it on me because I haven't file yet. Then I tried it on a client who has filed but owed. And it won't work because both result screens were identical. So, not brilliant.
  25. Haven't you ever faked it?
