  1. You're right that the inventory loophole doesn't make the mileage deductible, but he should advise the client to establish a home office immediately, because it will qualify as a principal place of business under the administrative rules. From the link you posted: Your home office will qualify as your principal place of business if you meet the following requirements. You use it exclusively and regularly for administrative or management activities of your trade or business. You have no other fixed location where you conduct substantial administrative or management activities of your trade or business I think he would qualify under these rules. Maybe not last year but it can be done for this year.
  2. When I built my last computer, I told them I wanted the fastest processor, hard drive, graphics, network, etc with a shit load of RAM. I spent 1,200 just on the parts. No regrets. That was in 2012.
  3. Tell him to get a home office. Problem solved. He may already have a home office if he stores inventory at home. Edit: http://www.irs.gov/publications/p587/ar02.html#en_US_2013_publink1000226297 I'd bet he has some inventory or samples at home. Go for it!
  4. You obviously don't understand the way my mind works.
  5. Thanks! I hate when they do that. My eyes are not drawn up there. And when I click on a field and there's no green arrow, I assume I should just type in that field!
  6. ATX says to efile one 8868, then duplicate the client file and create the second 8868. Then contact the EFC and ask them to unlock the EIN so you can efile a second 8868.
  7. The school district might be right if "visiting clients or customers" means what it appears to mean.
  8. Where does this come from? There's no green arrow to jump to another form by when I enter a number there it says I'm overriding it?
  9. 3 of my 4 workstations are XP and I haven't hadn't any problems. My server/workstation is 8.1 and zero problems as well. We will be upgrading XP machines AFTER tax season. We were too busy to deal with it last fall. XP was the first OS that didn't freeze several times a day so many of us remember it fondly. But having worked with 8 for over a year, I hate when I'm on one of my XP computers.
  10. Yes but how do you efile both? My staff already efiled the 8868 for the 990 and now we can't the 2nd 8868 to efile. I even duplicated the return to create the efile but that was rejected by the EFC as a duplicate. Grrrr. I paper filed extensions last year with Ogden and had to fight them all summer to prove extensions were filed. Rather not do that again. It comes up when they qualify for the health insurance credit or they have unrelated business income.
  11. What is the best procedure to efile 8868 extension when the organization has both a 990 & a 990T? Thanks!
  12. It's actually more complicated that that: http://www.irs.gov/publications/p463/ch04.html Transportation expenses include the ordinary and necessary costs of all of the following. Getting from one workplace to another in the course of your business or profession when you are traveling within the city or general area that is your tax home. Tax home is defined in chapter 1. Visiting clients or customers. Going to a business meeting away from your regular workplace. Getting from your home to a temporary workplace when you have one or more regular places of work. These temporary workplaces can be either within the area of your tax home or outside that area.
  13. Look for an attachment to the K1. It doesn't go to the 4797 anymore. It hasn't for a few years now. The reason is because Sec 179 is a separately stated item on the K1, handled at the shareholder level. So any gain and 179 recapture is handled at the shareholder level.
  14. This is why I don't take business clients that don't use QuickBooks. I tell them they either have to enter and reconcile in QB or pay someone (me perhaps) to do it for them. I tell them that keeping books is part of being in business. If they refuse, I wish them well and send them on their way.
  15. MD CPA here. The balance sheet doesn't really count on the Form 1. (By the way, only entities file form 1-sole props file AT3-51.) Average inventory gets reported on page 2 of the Form 1. It's nice if this agrees with the balance sheet, but it doesn't effect the valuation calculation that the state does. Some counties/municipalities don't tax inventory and some do. Inventory is supposed to be average of 12 months (ha ha!) but most do average of beginning and ending.
  16. ScanSnaps rock! They never die either. I took my old one home when I upgraded everyone to the 1500. Bought a Canon once and it last about a year and a half.
  17. Judy, The IRS changed it quite a few years ago that you only need to file the 2553 and not the 8832. The timing of processing the two forms was causing a lot of headaches.
  18. Updated this morning without any problems. Although there was what seemed like several minutes of anxiety where it appeared nothing was happening during the install on my workstation/server. It installed much faster on my workstations. 13.4.2.35 is my new version. Is that what all of you have?
  19. I just wish it took up about 1/3 of the screen space it does or would at least remember the size I resize to. I usually only need two lines.
  20. I don't like to update heading into a weekend. I get most of work done on weekends when i don't get interrupted. Also, I'm have zero problems right now.
  21. Any brave souls install it yet?
  22. Is the message red? I just tested it and I did not get an error at all. What error are you getting?
  23. C:ProgramDataCCH Small Firm ServicesATX 2013 Server My total size for that folder is 2.1 GB for about 350 clients.
  24. I'm not having that problem. Try using the Detail tab instead of the input tab, though I don't know why that would matter.
