  1. Correct
  2. He gets 1,800.
  3. Did you go through the ATX standard process that creates a duplicate of the client? I hate that. I'd much prefer to just have one file for each client. Last year we had several returns rolled over for the original filing and not the amended filing, so the carryovers and comparisons were wrong. You could call support and they would allow the efile. In the past, I've always just added the 1040X to the existing file, but that was for a paper file.
  4. Uncheck box 5 and 8. I'm not using those at all. If you customize the question about having Social Security numbers to Yes (line 2), then just enter amounts actually received on 16 and 19, that will handle 99.9% of all your situations.
  5. You can override line 3 on the worksheet, until they get it fixed.
  6. If only it didn't add to the stress of an already stressful tax season, though. Already have one MD return to amend, and now we have to figure out how to track the MD returns that will be held or need to be amended.
  7. Yes, they do. https://support.atxinc.com/support/FormStatus/FormName
  8. Many people I tell to set up an irs.gov account, have to wait for a code in the mail, and if they've moved since last filing, it could take months to get an account set up.
  9. We should start a pool for how long it will take before the new MD tax forms are ready to be filed.

  11. Anyone who doesn't know how much they got and can't look it up, I will assume they got the full amount. Everyone is entitled to screw themselves out of money, if that's the way they choose to live. I also looked mine up on my IRS account, BECAUSE I'M NOT A LUDDITE!
  12. I shouldn't laugh because that's sooooo bad for the environment.
  13. True, but you can make a tax return or extension payment for 2020 on IRS direct pay site. I would go with tax return for simplicity's sake.
  14. And I doubt a side business truck was 100% business, but I suppose it could be. And maybe he didn't claim the actual expenses in addition to depreciation and you can be the hero who amends it. And thinking about it, I believe you can amend to NOT claim 179 or as much 179, if that would make sense.
  15. Go to your online banking site and search from April 2020 to January 2021 for IRS or Treas. I found both of mine in seconds, but I did have direct deposit.
  16. Prices in TN seemed to be about 20-40% of what they are where I live, when I visited a few years ago. I got a $40 steak for $16 in TN! I would have paid more for that steak in a local butcher shop than I paid for it in a restaurant in TN. Now, admittedly, we weren't in the big cities of TN, but I don't live in a big city in MD, either.
  17. That is weird. I just customized it with a text field to add the year (arial bold 22 point).
  18. Not quite that simple: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/business-or-hobby-answer-has-implications-for-deductions And, hobbies can deduct cost of goods sold against hobby income, up to the amount of income, right on the Other Income line.
  19. 2020 rules, so if they are not a dependent in 2020, the get the full amounts of both, if income is low enough, regardless of what their parents already got for them.
  20. That's exactly correct.
  21. But that causes SE tax on a hobby.
  22. That should work, unless the programming didn't allow for a zero current year earned income. Maybe put a $1 for wages on the worksheet for that line?
  23. By 'last year' you mean 2020?
  24. Sure, but those checks come from different agencies. IRS needs a website to submit bank info, similar to Social Security's site.
  25. Sure, but who can get through to the IRS these days, and do we really want people calling for every little thing, when there are those with real IRS problems? I tried to call practitioner line during the snow storm and got a message to try again later. I thought all the preparers in the storm would be busy with snow related activities, and not calling the IRS.
