  1. Up to age 19, it doesn't matter unless child is contributing more than half of his own support. Over age 19 and not a student, income limit is $3650. Single person Under 65 whose gross income is at least $9350; Over 65 is $10750. Read the little explaination notes at the bottom of the page that you are looking at. It differentiates between Unearned (interest and dividends) and Earned Income.
  2. Here is what I found in my Tax Insight Workbook: "If the estate of a U S individual who died in 2010 has a total FMV that does not exceed $1,300,000, the carryover basis rule additions will result in a FMV at date of death basis for all assets in the estate." That was sort of what I was gathering from the information I read at other sources, but nobody else put it in plain english. I am sure someone smarter than me will concur or correct.
  3. I also have always done the "Custom" for both my copy and the client copy. Rather than agonize over it, I just do it and after a while it becomes "old Hat". You quickly learn which worksheets, etc you want to have in the printed file. Especially when the least expensive paper I can find right now is $30 a case.
  4. Terry....to my knowledge, the bank information never appears on the 1040 when it is a debit. When you filled out the bank account debit information, did you also put in a date for the debit. I usually choose April 10; so the client can file now but doesn't have to have the money in the account until then. You have to put some date on that line even if it is the day you prepare the return.
  5. We probably all do at some time or other. (start second guessing ourselves) One of the reasons that this board is so great. I concur with Intangible Assets. Good Luck.
  6. Hey JB...Good for her and congratulations to you as you raised her partly on your own. Sounds like you did a fine job. Yes, we are your family!
  7. Open the program; open the e-file Manager; click on E-file in upper left; go to bottom of drop down box and click on Test Transmission.

  9. I do it every year. It only takes seconds and you find out immediately.
  10. My feelings are not hurt in the least. I have been with ATX and Saber since 1966 and certainly am aware of the ins and outs of negotiations. I just thought that it probably wasn't a very nice thing to hear for preparers who paid full price. Heck, I negotiated for months with them last year to get the promised $100 referral fee for a colleague who bought and kept ATX Max. In the end I got it (sort of) as it shows in my account as a credit. It was not issued until after I paid for this year's program. That way they might keep me coming back, right? Maybe and maybe not. I have just never understood why those who left ATX in 2009 and returned in 2010 were given preference.; and I am not saying whether I was one of those or not. I understand the nuances of shopping around and everyone not paying the same price for the same product; but this isn't exactly a product that you can purchase on EBay or Amazon. Taking this one step further, I am not ashamed of what my part-time Employer pays me. It is a very generous wage. It is just that nobody inoffice knows what anyone else is being paid and it is company policy not to discuss it. We all know we are being paid on our merits and can negotiate with management at any time. As far as price negotiations with ATX go, it is a known fact that if you did not use TRX last year, you don't have a prayer of getting a better deal. End of Story!

    Latest Update

The IRS has lifted the ban on stockpiling the returns that cannot be filed until mid to late February. In answer to another question, WI has always been piggyback, but it is correct that you have to fill out Fed before state and just an extra click to file them separately.
  12. I fill out, print, and keep the paper in the clients' files. That would be Form 8867, Paid Preparer's Earned Income Credit Checklist. I do ask the client the question. I didn't think it was an option not to, but I don't really have a lot of these.
  13. I still don't, and never will, understand the different pricing for different folks. It isn't like pricing out a tax return wherein some are much more difficult and time consuming than others. We all get the same disks, the same set of updates and books; who decides on the disparity in pricing and why? I am not complaining. My decisions whether to purchase or not are based on my own personal needs. My need for support, or not, is based on my own knowledge. Just perplexed, that's all. In addition, I don't feel than anyone should be revealing how much they did or did not pay on this board for all to see. Where I work, it is grounds for immediate dismissal to discuss how much our hourly wage is. Some things should just not be talked about in the interest of other peoples' feelings. IMO
  14. You got that SOOOOOO right; and probably loudly echoed by most of us here.
  15. On the blue bar above ATX Latest News is a "Subscribe" button.
  16. I have several coming back after testing new waters last year. I will charge them the same as I would charge anyone else. That is, if you want them back next year.

  18. That would be me, too, Margaret and you raise a very good question. Both Taxbilly and KC have documented a "yes". Refer to Master Tax Guide, Paragraph 1019, Page 374 which states: "However, the cost of extra Medicare (Medicare B ) is deductible." Section 7,240.05
  19. ATX: IRS 1040 Efile and acknowledgement schedule 1/14/2011 1040 Efile is available now. Be sure you have downloaded the latest program and form updates, create efiles and send. IRS and state efiles are sent separately this year; all states are efiled in the "state-only" format, meaning they are created and sent separately from the federal efile. You may efile your federal return without having the state forms, then edit that return later to add state forms and create/send the state efile. The IRS will send the first acknowledgements late Sunday Jan 16th for all returns efiled Jan 12-15. The first RAL checks should post to the EROs late Sunday night or Monday morning. The first ERC checks are printed in two weeks...when IRS makes the first weekly deposits for all returns accepted Jan 14-20, presumably Jan 28th this year. Refer to the Refund Cycle Chart on the Efile page of the support site for weekly deposit dates. Refund Cycle Chart http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p2043.pdf NOTE: Because our EFC is completely automated, there is no way to stop an individual e-file once you send it to us.
  20. Too funny, Margaret. I have a Calico paperweight named Annie. Sure wish she would learn how to file. She literally comes in and lays on my desk when she thinks it is time for me (and her) to go to bed. Did you know that most cats are left-handed (as I am)? Just observe them once.
  21. Rita, go to Preferences, Open Return and near the bottom you will find a box to check to "Enable Payer Manager". Hope this is what you are looking for.
  22. Taxbilly is correct that you need to update each program after you load it. Otherwise it will not accept the return files that were created on a newer version of the program. Very easy to do, but important. I don't recall there being so many updates in those early years. I have all the way back to 1999 on this computer and have seldom had any reason to use anything more than six years back. Good Luck.
