  1. We have been able to install ATX on three machines for some time now with no extra cost. I have no issues with that. We don't need to be scared out of our wits at this point in the tax season.
  2. Yes, when we set those goals, we forget about all the interruptions. I have never been so behind in my life. Cannot believe the people still calling for appts. Not that I could have gotten them done any sooner.
  3. It really is a non-issue. All you have to do is maximize the screen once. It isn't just ATX. It happens when you update windows and sometimes when you run a scan. Click maximize, all done!!!!!
  4. No words will comfort you at this time, but the caring and heartfelt sympathy of your friends will strengthen you. We just attended a memorial service yesterday. We also had to take three days out of our busy schedules to travel. Take care as you go. There are some things that are just more important than tax returns and they always seem to pop up near the deadline. Somehow, we always make it through.
  5. Same experience last week. And, I had to tell them that if their son (who is not very motivated) drops out of school; they will be in a world of hurt. Change your deductions NOW!!!!!!
  6. It never gets easier; only more complicated. When we first started, we thought that we would be young forever. In some ways, I still feel that way, but know that it is unrealistic. Finding someone younger with our dedication is not as easy as it should be. Coming up the hard way is not part of the current makeup. Those with a small amount of experience want to start out at the top with the pay that goes with it. That will never happen here. A few years ago, I had one gal work for me two evenings. That was her attitude. Needless to say, two evenings is all she got. After I added on to my office, she wanted to come back and I HAD to turn her down.
  7. Isn't this interesting? The girl I had for two years could have stepped into my shoes some day. However, in two years, she learned absolutely nothing. ZERO! This year, I have my cousin who is my age working WITH me and doing a fantastic job. She doesn't savvy computers much, but she is awesome with the calculator and green paper spreadsheets. She got a $20 tip the other day from a client who brought his stuff in a grocery bag. She says she never got a "tip" before in her life. The downside here is huge. We will go down together unless we find a data entry person next year or the year after.; or she picks up the pace. This is no time to be teaching anyone how to prepare a tax return on software. She totally "gets" the paper and pencil aspect. Nevertheless, I am counting my blessings. By the time some of these returns get to me, they are so organized that I can just input data. If a contractor or any business person has a pack of gum mixed in with his business supplies; out it goes. Taking it one day at a time in Wisconsin!
  8. Lucky you!!!!!!!!!!!!
  9. This is a constant and ongoing battle with clients. "Please, please, have more withheld!" It is often the fault of the software. I don't know how many times this week I have tried to explain the difference between the days when payroll was done by hand and we figured percentages; as opposed to these days of technology when the software doesn't recognize you as a human person with a "situation"!
  10. This afternoon he was in Wyoming and his contact Beth was looking for a preparer in my area. I reported it to the spamdesk.
  11. Not a problem. Sharing is caring.
  12. PM me with your e-mail and I will send you the template.
  13. My parents had a Dart before they had another Dodge (don't remember the model, but can see the car in my mind) and finally a Dynasty. Our family pretty much runs to Mopar also.
  14. Had a voice mail this AM from a guy who cancelled his first appointment and didn't come back for several weeks because "he was busy". Voice mail said "I am desperate for my tax return!" Wish I had been home. Would have told him to come and pick up his stuff as I am desperate to get the other 54 on hold done; and more coming in every day.
  15. My son has a 73 Plymouth Road Runner restored and a 70 Barracuda original; and lots of trophies. C'mon Jack.; don't count us ladies out. My 04 Jeep Overland has the V8 HO Engine and I LUV it.!!!!!
  16. My trustee client was able to cash in the stocks almost immediately; and last week they sold the house. As KC so aptly said; he has little taxation knowledge and even though they are inheriting a considerable amount of money from the dear aunt; they don't want to hire an attorney to handle it. He did come here to get an EIN for the trust, so what now? This will definitely be an extension.
  17. This is a good and interesting question as I will be handling one of these soon. Client died on Jan 8 and all of the stocks and her house were in the trust. I would also like an answer to that same question. My client, the trustee, really doesn't have a handle on this thing. With all that money involved, they should be hiring someone with a lot more expertise than me.
  18. New client this year; retired pastor and 94 years old. You would not believe how organized the paperwork was. His wife is in her 80s. His biggest worry was that I would not remember about the housing deduction for the retired pastor from his ministerial retirement plan. Lots of investments; lots of interest and dividends. What a joy to work with. In the end they don't owe a penny. Wow! Hope he sticks around for a few more.
  19. I also know a preparer who still does them with pencil and paper. She calls me at least once a year with a question on something or other. This year it was the ACA. She is quite elderly and is doing a fantastic job as far as I can tell. She wants to keep her foot in the door because she, herself, has some rental properties.
  20. I have a client who WAS given the name and ss# of the person who took her as a spouse for a huge refund. Of course, who knows if that is really his name. (Only the Shadow knows for sure!!!!) She received a bill from the IRS for $30,000 that she owed from the year that she was compromised. She was the one who noticed that the SS on the letter was not hers. Wouldn't you think with some of these huge refunds, they would stop and check before issuing the money?
  21. You forget what business my men are in. We watch Wayne Carini chasing cars all the time.
  22. We are really cute. Most of my clients really like and comment on my presentation folders. Much nicer than a bunch of papers thrown together in a green and white envelope. I have a very few clients who want their copy of the return in a .pdf format. It doesn't cost that much for me to give them something in return for what they pay me.
  23. These are the small labels with the efile logo that you used to be able to get free from the IRS. Those of us who use them to adorn our finished returns are nearly out of them. Last week, my daughter-in-law created a template on Word that allows me to print them by the page and in living color.
  24. I just checked my acks and the client who had six states has acks on the Fed and ALL of the states. My sigh of relief can be heard 'round the world. Now, "only" 54 behind and appts all next week. BUT, I can now print e-file stickers. How about that Lion?
  25. I just filed one last night without it. Went through just fine.
