Messy lump sum SSI Disability payment with private insurance
kcjenkins replied to norcalea's topic in General Chat
Yes, each year can be done individually. -
Ken, I never saw them do that either. But it would not surprise me if they have some internal rule about 'YOU MUST MAKE THE DIRECT DEPOSIT WITHIN X DAYS, OR THE AUTHORIZATION EXPIRES'. Even tho it makes no logical sense, and only delays the taxpayer getting his/her refund that much longer.

No need to 'check' anything, the program gets the age info from the taxpayer info page. It's not the 'company' retirement age, it's the SS retirement age.

Listen to your wife, SHE IS RIGHT.

Partnership with high expenses but no income
kcjenkins replied to gianni1212's topic in General Chat
There may well be some general administrative expenses that could be deducted this year, but the costs that go into the property must be capitalized. There are some that you have the option of making an election for capitalizing or of deducting now. -
Can you see the Fed mailing slip? This is not a great solution, but I have done it when I did not have time to figure out the problem, just needed it RIGHT NOW. I went to the Fed mailing slip, then clicked on the Tools menu, and select 'unprotect ltr' and edit the address to the state address.

That is true for the Lifetime, but not for the Hope or AOC.

Clearly you need to zero it out since they are now out of business. {bet their bad bookkeeping contributed to that.] Even tho bringing a negative COGS to zero means increasing Income by the difference. Essentially you are adjusting Beginning Inventory with this adjustment. Depending on the amount involved, might need to use 3115.

I agree with those who posted that the OP might not yet know enough to do the return. But I also think that they deserve an answer that helps them learn. Thus my previous post.

Basically, the EmployER portion is an expense, the EmployEE portion is not, because it is already in the Wages expense.

Personal representatives. All personal representatives must include in their gross income fees paid to them from an estate. If you are not in the trade or business of being an executor (for instance, you are the executor of a friend's or relative's estate), report these fees on Form 1040, line 21. If you are in the trade or business of being an executor, report these fees as self-employment income on Schedule C or Schedule C-EZ (Form 1040).
-
Yes, she could take either the AOC or the Hope, but not the Lifetime.
-
I'd put it on a Sch C-EZ, and take any related expenses. If there is a profit, it WOULD be subject to SE tax.

Sounds that way because it is. But it's OK Bart, I have reached a point in my life where I do and say what I believe, and don't get bothered by some one disagreeing with me. I have posted more political points than usual, this year, because several things going on today really do disturb me. No one has to agree with me on everything, to hold my respect. As long as they respect my rights, I will be fine. As for the jokes, I'm sure most of you understand why I've focused on them more this year. The fact that I needed them is all the justification I think I needed. They were all labeled, after all.

FIRST EVER. HAVE YOU EVER HAD THIS? HOW TO PROCEED??
kcjenkins replied to komtax's topic in General Chat
Since it was a direct deposit, there is no way to just "don't cash the check". I'd advise that you read the letter of explanation before doing anything else, but STRONGLY urge her not to spend more than the 7K. -
Strange, Pub 946 still says For property placed in service in 2012, file Form 4562 with either of the following. Your original 2012 tax return, whether or not you file it timely. An amended return for 2012 filed within the time prescribed by law. An election made on an amended re-turn must specify the item of section 179 property to which the election applies and the part of the cost of each such item to be taken into account. The amen-ded return must also include any resulting adjust-ments to taxable income.

Typical, they push to get more returns efiled, then make it harder to efile than to mail.

Well, I should confess that I once called a client at 2:30 AM to ask him a question, so I have to forgive clients sometimes. Of course, I did not do it on purpose, I was working late, as many of you know I often do, being a night owl type. I got to the point that I needed just one small bit of info to finish, and without thinking about looking at the clock, grabbed the phone and called him. When he said "Hello?" I fired off my question. His "NOW????" response made me look at the clock! Need I say I was embarrassed? He teased me about every year after that

It is going to depend on what PDF program you use, Many do allow it, but not all. Check the user manual or help key

I think you are a bit over the line, Jainen, on this one. It's not a matter of his not standing behind his work. It's a matter of not being expected to put up with such a rude demand. I think he went further than he needed to, IMHO. I'd have fired him after that first attack.
-
OK you are forgiven.

Anybody that calls on Sunday should get $100 added to their bill.
