  1. Thanx, Jainen. Always enlightening.
  2. Nursing home is in a neighboring town not more than 20-30 miles away from the home she sold, and I thought moving expenses would be a long shot anyway. I'll see if she has an annual statement or monthly detail from the home. Only a couple of months there in 2011 that I'm preparing now. But, I need to learn what to ask for for 2013 taxes too! Thanx.
  3. Have a client who moved to a retirement community into assisted living; she's certified as chronically ill and unable to perform the ADLs (is that the acronym? activities of daily living). I take all her monthly expenses as medical deductions, right? But, she had a buy-in component with some ownership percentage. Is some or all of her cost to get into the facility also medical? What about moving expenses? I'm aging and my clientele is aging, so I know I have to learn more about this.
  4. And, that passive activity form also.
  5. Yes, same as always. If in the course of his trade or business. Lower limits for issuing to attorneys.
  6. If the partnership paid non-corporations for services, then the partnership issues Form 1099-MISC.
  7. CCH's ProSystem fx will be releasing their second update. However, with so much changing from the IRS, I'm waiting until this weekend to even install the disc and then will do the updates. But then, my clients come in very late after corrected 100-Bs and K-1s. (In fact, I still have a couple of 2011 returns dropped off in December!)
  8. From today's CCH e-fx News: Business returns: The original start date was Monday, January 7, 2013. This is delayed to a date yet to be announced by the IRS.
  9. So, as your loyal clients call in, let them know that you do have time to take on a few new select clients, and ask them to please refer you to their good friends, or teachers/retirees/investors/"insert category here" like you. If you're looking for investors, tell your broker you have room for a few new clients. That kind of thing. Let the price shoppers go. I just lost a long-time client that took a lot of time. She was sweet, but I kept raising her price as her neediness increased. She called to thank me but she found someone who will prepare her taxes for less money. It does work!
  10. The 22 January date was before Congress voted 1 January, so I was expecting a later date. This is a good year to replace your lost clients with more loyal clients, those that value your service and expertise and friendly smile over a quick refund. You'll have more time for clients getting their Forms 1099-B in February! And, more time for clients not getting refunds but needing your planning expertise. Opportunities abound.
  11. NY doesn't charge $100 if you're an EA!
  12. They download and print the W-2 from employers who load them to a portal-like service. You need your client's permission and password. I have a client who works for Home Depot who comes in fairly early each year; she's printed out her own W-2 or does it from my computer when she gets here. I believe we got her mother's unemployment form also from CT when she came in. I save paperwork in electronic client folders if I receive it electronically, and hope to scan in all paperwork this year. But, I print a copy to attach to Form 8879, as well as one for the client if we're getting it via my computer so she has a copy in her folder to take home.
  13. I don't roll over a return until client is coming in. Well, mine maybe to have something to play with, if I ever find any time to play!
  14. KC knows who's been naughty and knows who's been nice!
  15. The lesson is document, document, document. She did NOT get to deduct the $12,000 she listed. She lost over $5,000 of her deductions for not getting contemporaneous acknowledgements from the charities. She lost more deductions that could not be directly tied to charities, such as DMV fees. And, she lost some percentages of expenses that could not be separated from expenses for her personal pets. I'm glad they went into such detail of how they arrived at their decisions.
  16. OK, I'll post so I can see what points there on under my avatar. Do you mean the dots? Oh, I see the gray text after I post. Mine is 0. So there, Tom! :read:
  17. Will do. Probably the week containing July Fourth. If my center is in VA and not another state. You can stop by and be our guest hammer-er or driller or go out for ice cream after dinner!

    Happy New Year!
  19. Dickenson County, VA. We stayed on the floors of Haysi High School in Haysi, VA. My worksite was the farthest away in Clintwood, VA. Our group of nearly 150 adults and teens went to five centers in VA, WV, and NC. In other years, they have been in other states along the southern Appalachian Mountains. The other VA center was in Washington County, VA. Well, ASP has lots of centers, but that was the other VA county where I knew the workers. All five of our groups met up on the way home, so we got to hear about all five of the centers and the many work sites where our groups worked.
  20. My daughter convinced me to go along with her on Appalachia Service Project this past summer. We were in VA, so the worst we had was 106 degree heat. For the most part, we were welcomed. You are brave.
  21. Oh my, lowering you in a basket through a hole in the wall?!
