You can decline the engagement. Offer to put the company on extension while he searches for a new preparer.

That's what has stalled me too. CT has some bizarre method to submit .pdf files on their web site or something I haven't taken the time to learn yet. Since I can't do both federal and CT through my software, I've paper filed all. Have to figure it out for 1041s now.

I don't use ATX anymore, but I was able to include statements within the return in the past. In fact, ATX had a fairly extensive list of boilerplate statements, as well as blank statements and lists within the software. Poke around in the menus and use the Help within the program and the Knowledgebase online.

Bulldog, do you have a bar in your tax office? I'm sure you'd get lots of clients. And, I hear the mark-up on alcohol is much better than our profit margin preparing taxes! No drinks until tax prep bill is paid.

Oh how I missed KC and her Laugh of the Day! Thanx for stopping by and sharing your humor. Hugs to you and your hubby.

This year, only Forms 1040 and 1041 must be efiled or use the Form 8948 plus Opt-Out to cover yourself. When I prepare Forms 1120-S, I give the K-1s to the tax matters partner to deliver -- but it's usually a husband/wife company and I usually prepare the personal returns also! Maybe the preparer is supposed to deliver the K-1s to the shareholders; someone will answer that. The IRS does NOT send the K-1s to the shareholders.

US. Check Pub. 78 or search on the IRS site for qualifying charities: http://apps.irs.gov/app/eos/mainSearch.do?mainSearchChoice=pub78&dispatchMethod=selectSearch

This is a "sale" of his property. Search on this site to find lots of informative threads on this topic.

Your parents are lucky to have you. And, you are more than just a tax preparer; you're a good daughter and good person. Hang in there.

What Jainen said. (I was looking at a really old Pub. 544 quoted in a really old HRB text; the chart with a column for buyer and a column for seller might've been specific to HRB. Although, HRB usually ripped their examples straight from the IRS pubs.)

Amen!

Pub 544 has a chart and examples. (Haven't done one of these since homework for EA course!)

Go for the EA. You have until 31 December 2013 to fall back to the RTRP. But, to all our new and almost RTRPs -- a huge congratulations!

Due to income OP said Roth contributions are phased out. But they qualify (earned income, etc.) to make traditional contributions. With no more phase outs for CONVERSIONS, they can convert to a Roth immediately. If no other traditional contributions over the years, they won't have to worry about earnings, ratios of with vs without basis, etc. Back door Roth.

New from ProSystem fx, so CCH is aware of the new IRS reject codes: On Saturday, February 25, 2012, the IRS put in place new electronic filing rejections that are impacting the electronic filing of Individual returns with Net Operating Losses (NOL) and/or the Form 2555 Housing exclusion reported on Form 1040, Line 21. In some scenarios, the IRS is issuing these new rejections in error; in some scenarios, program changes are needed to send more specific data. We are working with the IRS to reduce the scope of these rejections so they no longer issue in error. We have also completed our program changes to eliminate rejections regarding insufficient data. In order to ensure these and other miscellaneous electronic filing updates are utilized, on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. CST, we will begin stopping Individual returns that have not been calculated and uploaded on Release 2011.03010, which posts overnight on Saturday, March 3, 2012. Returns that were uploaded prior to that point and are ready to release will not be impacted. Please plan to update to this most current release of the Individual program and recalculate returns before exporting electronic files after Saturday, March 3.

I don't use ATX. Call tech support. Maybe the statement exists, but needs a box checked or question answered or.... Maybe the software needs an update. Maybe no one has reported this problem yet this year to tech support.

Do you have the statement attached to line 21 the message mentions?

Education expenses for questionable dependent
Lion EA replied to Margaret CPA in OH's topic in General Chat
FIll out a dependency support worksheet. Ask her to go over it with you to get the most accurate numbers she can provide. Then you have it on paper, either over 50% or not. Save it in your files. -
Obviously you're filing him MFS unless HE does something to get you her info, signature, etc. It's not your job. You did your job by providing him an analysis of MFS vs. MFJ.

Too old to be dad's QC and earned too much to be QR. TP stands on his own for tax return.
