  1. I think I read somewhere that the test must be completed by 12/31/13. If this is correct I will have one more year and someone can have my 65 clients. I do not believe it is fair to long time preparers to have to take a test now. I have done taxes for over 40 years and never had one audited. I have never taken any CPE credit courses, and when I see some of the questions posted on this board, from so called tax preparers and accountants, I know why the IRS is doing this. Only my 2 cents
  2. I have a 1098t that shows a scholarship amount. Where does this get entered in TRX? I called TRX but they seem to have gone home early/
  3. Regarding the new law allowing the deduction of RI TDI tax, how and where do you deduct this tax? this is the new law http://www.mass.gov/dor/businesses/help-and-resources/legal-library/directives/directives-by-decade/2012-directives/dd-12-xx.html
  4. Questionable Dependents A taxpayer wanted to claim his elected official as a dependent because he “pays his salary.” One woman wanted to include the months she was pregnant in 2011, even though she relinquished rights upon the child’s birth. Yet another taxpayer wanted to claim a former spouse. Disallowed Charitable Donations Another client wanted to claim the market value of whole blood that the taxpayer donated. One taxpayer wanted to claim a $100,000 deduction for burning down an old cabin. Sorry, but gambling losses don't count as charitable deductions. Private school tuition - not deductible for charity. Raffle tickets, even when they're for a good cause, and even when you didn't win the trip to Disney World. Pets proved popular with taxpayers wanting to deduct everything from pet food to vet bills. A handyman proposed to take a $25,000 mileage deduction, even though he had only $10,000 in revenue. He justified it by saying he drove 50,000 business miles in one year. A rental house in Arizona for the taxpayer’s health. An in-ground swimming pool without a doctor's order. A spouse’s drug habit.
  5. H&R Block Manager Arrested for Identity Theft of Tax Clients An H&R Block manager in Southern California has been arrested for using the identities of his former tax preparation clients in an identity theft scheme. http://www.accountingtoday.com/news/HR-Block-Manager-Arrested-Identity-Theft-Tax-Clients-62102-1.html?ET=webcpa:e2337:241770a:&st=email&utm_source=editorial&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=WebCPA_Daily_032612
  6. I have a Connecticut preparer, and have a client who lives in Massachusetts and works in Rhode Island. There is a new law in Massachusetts where Rhode Island TDI can be deducted as a credit for taxes paid to another jurisdiction, and you can go back three years. I was wondering what forms I needed to be prepared for Massachusetts on that return. Any help will be greatly appreciated thank you advance.
  7. I have been doing multi state returns for years, and I have never sent any state retruns to other states. None of the states have come back to ask for the other state return as of yet. I have also e-filed all of them. I don't know if the program sends them with the E-file.
  8. I lived in MA near 2 casinos in CT, and when I lived in MA and went to them I never had to file a CT return. And also won in a RI State run casino, and did not have to file a RI return.
  9. In TRX PRO you can print tax forms on both sides of the paper, if you have a printer that prints duplex. It only prints forms and detail sheets on both sides. Saves a lot of paper. You must print to PDF format first and then print to the printer. Go to 'Settings', 'Printer and delivery settings' Check off box 'Print in PDF format' Check off 'Duplex print' Make sure your printer is set for duplex printing. I just used it to print a big return for 2009 and it worked perfectly. All of the forms Federal and State printed on both sides. Saved me at least 50 sheets of paper. I have been looking for this feature for a long time and finally found it.
  10. I am using TRX PRO, and have a client who uses a 2106 but does not itemize. I cannot find any way to get it to go to line 24 of 1040. TRX is closed today and was wondering if anyone on line can tell me how to do it. tia

    Federal acks

I cannot believe how fast the federal is approving e-files. I sent in 2 today, at different times. The first ack was received before I sent the second one. the second one I received within 10 min. And both are marked 'At the state'. This was done through TRXPRO. :spaz:
  12. I have my first 2 clients tomorrow, and was wondering if the e-file was working.
  13. I have a Mass amended return to complete. TRX PRO only has the CA6 form without the worksheet. What do I have to send in to the State of MA, the return will have a balance due. I see only sending in a completed Form 1, with the words "Amended return" printed on page 1. Thank you and have a wonderful day.
  14. If you do only a few returns out-of-state I wouldn't even worry about if they want you to register with them. All the ones that I've done have never bothered me I don't about 10 of them they only bother you if you do 10 or more returns with them. states that I have done are as follows: New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Virginia, California, Hawaii, South Carolina, New Hampshire Connecticut and Maine.
  15. They will not get PTIN numbers, they will no be signing the returns. HR and Jackson have the same type of preparers. All it cost them is one fee to the IRS for each office they have. As for as the test goes I am in the same boat as you I am 74 and it will force me to retire, unless I can talk my clients to accept the return as self prepared and I will e-file it. The IRS will never get the big preparers to get qualified help to prepare taxes.
  16. I have advertised only once in my 40+ years of preparing taxes, and found that the local newspaper gave me the most new clients. TV din -0- clients, word of mouth from clients got me the most over the years. Good luck!
  17. Has anyone used this program or tried it? I was wondering if it will work to enter information into the tax package? Any info will be appreciated Thank you
  18. I just tried to create the labels and other reports, but it is only picking up 15 records. If you need the list contact TRX and maybe they can get it to work.
  19. If I remember correctly, they lost their license with ATX due to the members of this board sounding off to ATX about the price.
  20. You have to realize that TaxWise is made to serve the IRS, and they care less about conversion to other programs even if they own it. TaxWise was the worst program I have ever used, but it was cheap from TRX!
  21. I used ATX for about 8 years, but when CCH got it and raised the price above what I can afford (ffor the small amount of returns I do), I switched to TRX and TaxWise. I did not like TaxWise except for the price I was paying for it. Last year when TRX went to TaxWorks, i was doubtful, but was happy with the way it all turned out. To me TaxWorks is way better than ATX. TaxWorks has a lot more going for it than ATX.

    Has anyone tried this product?
  23. You would not be in the tax business very long! :spaz:
  24. Since this new format on this board, I can not get only the new content. The old version was set so I can go directly to the newest posts of a post that I had previously read. But now if I have read a post and there are new posts to that post and I click on new content, it takes me back to the original post. What am I missing?
  25. I have a client that wants to start a not for profit organization. I have never started one, but have done the bookkeeping and tax returns for them. Can someone tell me what is needed to start a non profit. I know it has to be approved by the IRS, but don't know what forms have to be completed. Thank you in advance for any information.
