If we already have them in the system, there is a re-print fee, which we put right on the invoice. If they are still in the queue, no harm - no foul.2 points

.And why do you thing testing would help? the person can pass the test and then do the returns the way they want to anyway/2 points

I just re-did a return for the 3rd time because the client keeps 'forgetting' to tell me things - like thousands of dollars in income that he forgot to include in his documents. At least he's honest. Recognized that his 'amount due' was too low. Sheesh.1 point

I don't think it would do any good. Just try to get the 1120S filed as soon as possible and ask for penalty waiver for the shareholders when the letters come.1 point

Yes, thanks for the info. I do not know about the FIRE system either so I guess I will be learning after tax season.1 point

Yes, they have the 990 forms. After tax season if you request a copy of their program, you'll get the fully functional version and be able to see the forms available. You can use it to prepare returns to paper file, but I don't think you could efile without purchase and going through their setup. The payroll and 1099 informational returns are a separate module. I didn't purchase that since most of mine were already complete by the time I purchased in February, so I went with the PPR to minimize intial cash outlay to Drake since I'm still waiting for my ATX refund (approved and finally should be credited back to my cr card this week. Oy!). I do know that with Drake's program, it files 941s and 1099s directly through the IRS FIRE system. I'm not familiar with that, but I checked and would have needed to sign up and wait for some sort of approval and user access for that system, and since those returns were mostly complete I chose another method to finish the 3 filings not yet efiled through ATX because I didn't need the hassle during tax season. I'm guessing that the FIRE system is a direct file upload. I'll check that out soon.1 point

As you pointed out the K-1 are all 0 because trust does not distribute any income, BUT the K-1 exists. I still think the trustee should send out the K-1 even if 0. You did your part by giving them a copy of the 1041 plus K1.1 point

>>>>>>Anyway, don't deceive yourself that a lower price means inferior service.<<<<< Agreed,I do charge a lower price than the average in my area. I do give quality professional service and am here year round to service my clients. I am apalled at some of the prices I see in my area. A MFJ return with a Schedule A ranges between 125.00 to 500.00. I am at an even $95.00 and see no current need to raise the price. As Jainen said, I am a one man show and choose to stay that way for a while. When I retire from my regualar day job, then it will be a different story. Only have four years to go and counting.1 point

The software license and price has nothing to do with how capable the software is. This website runs on many free open source systems. The server OS is Linux, the web server is Apache. The programming/scripting language that the forum software is written in is PHP. The database is mySQL. The only thing proprietary is the forum software, but the entire infrastructure doing the heavy lifting is free and open source, and it gets hit a heck of lot harder than any tax software database. If free open source software is good enough to power Google's servers (and most of the rest of the internet), it's good enough for me. The problem is that CCH chose the wrong tool for the job. Software license shouldn't even be a deciding factor when choosing the infrastructure for your application.1 point

>>Anyone who prices the same services I provide for less money prove that they know what their services are worth.<< Price is not the same as profit. Small tax offices can be horribly inefficient. For example, many of the discussions on this forum suggest that the tax preparer is doing everything including efiling and billing. But hey, seasonal clerical workers are cheap! One or two might allow an office to double its volume, which in turn would make more powerful software and hardware affordable. (Of course, there's an opposite risk in getting too big supporting a corporate administration.) Anyway, don't deceive yourself that a lower price means inferior service.1 point

I read somewhere that the database RavenDB that ATX uses is one of those "free open source" software that may not have the horsepower to run in a network setting like Oracle or other commercial databases optimised for network environment. From the posts, it appears most of the ATX program crashes and slowdowns happens on network installation more frequently than stand alone installations.1 point

Haggling is an art! It is interesting to watch at a vegetable or flea market but NOT cool for professional services in USA!1 point

I've got 487 e-files with hardly any problems. I'm using a custom built computer utilizing Windows 7 Ultimate, an AMD Phenom II x4 940 3.00 Ghz processor, 8Gb ram, & 64 bit operating system. Eli1 point

A lot of people do not understand taxes at all. So they just accept what their tax preparer gives them. And of course they like big refunds.. Why not? But, they do not want to cheat, and when they learn that they have been filing incorrect returns, they are sad to lose the big refund,, but accepting of the reality. Some of them go back to get corrections filed, some just go forward, but most honest people want to file an honest return.1 point

Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong. Keep skunks and bankers at a distance. Life is simpler when you plow around the stump. A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor. Words that soak into your ears are whispered... not yelled. Meanness don't jes' happen overnight. Forgive your enemies; it messes up their heads. Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you. It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge. You cannot unsay a cruel word. Every path has a few puddles. When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty. The best sermons are lived, not preached. Most of the stuff people worry about ain't never gonna happen anyway. Don't judge folks by their relatives. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. Live a good, honorable life... Then when you get older and think back, you'll enjoy it a second time. Don 't interfere with somethin' that ain't bothering you none. Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a Rain dance. If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'. Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got. The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every mornin'. Always drink upstream from the herd. Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment. Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin' it back in. If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around.. Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God. Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.1 point

Yeah, my birthday, April 11, meant I seldom got to celebrate it on the day. On the other hand, it meant I got a better 'treat' when we did celebrate a week later! And it took three years of complaining, but I did finally get Ole Miss to change their Accountancy Weekend event until AFTER 4/15. They used to hold it in March.. OK, I do not know how much my complaints played in the change, but I did ask all my Ole Miss friends to request that they take us tax practioners into consideration. And they have, for the last several years scheduled it after the 15th. Because of Don's health, I still have not been able to take advantage of it, but maybe this year?1 point

Damn, my iPad was starting to do weird things; it didn't show that I had posted at all after the first one. I hope it didn't catch a bug from my desktop.1 point
