If I do not trust a clients documents and during the interview they are inconsistent in their answers I will not do the return.I fired a client yesterday with three rental units that said this year he spent no money on any of the units, never visited any of them,and did not pay the condo fees.He wanted to show large profits because he left his job and is trying to refinance them.He is either lying now or lied previous years on the information he gave me. In the paper work he provided was a receipt for condo fees on one unit. I do not need clients like this.

What, exactly, is a tanning bed model? Is it like a fashion model, only they... appear in ads for tanning beds? Is it some form of online adult entertainment geared toward tanning bed enthusiasts? I'm sorry, it just doesn't compute, and if I don't ask I'll have an aneurysm thinking about it.

There is also the issue of folks you just have NO clue how to track income and expenses. This is especially true with ( 1 ) older folks who (for example) rent out part of a duplex they own, or ( 2 ) therapists or other "people not numbers" people (I have yet to have a therapist for a client who has not been through bankruptcy at LEAST once and usually more than once). They have no concept of tracking miles, of NOT using the business account for personal expenses or the personal account for business expenses... argh. And trying to get details; forget it. It's not that they are trying to obfuscate; they are truly clueless.

Most tax agencies have a list of who is on the hook by law, and do not mind if others want to bite as well. The more they can seek money from, the better for the agency. FWIW, NYS came after me for employment taxes, based on a set of sample NYS-45 data which had our actual CA address, with the fake employees having a CA address, with invalid SSN's, unsigned, sent to their forms approval office. It is clear they have no issue coming after whomever they perceive as being liable.
