  1. Mr. Pencil, thank you for mentioning the "report" function that I would like to encourage people to use. In addition to be moderators, KC and I use the forum just like the rest of you by coming here to share ideas, help others, or we might pop on to quickly search the forum for posts that address a specific issue we are encountering in our work that day. I have my notifications set up so that I see a red number at the top of my screen any time a post is reported, much like the rest of you see when a PM is sent to you. This allows me to very quickly go to that reported post and see what the problem is without wading through all of the new posts that have occurred since my last visit. What is offensive to you might not seem so bad to me or to KC, and without you telling us, we have no way of knowing that a post or particular topic is bothering some of you. You shouldn't feel bad about using the "report" function either; you aren't being a tattletale. Try to think of it as raising your hand in class and giving us a heads up that will draw our attention more quickly to a post or topic.
  2. If you are using Excel and want something preformatted that looks nicer to give to a client, you can use one of the templates available online. With excel open, press F1 to bring up the help box and enter "loan amortization". There will be plenty to choose from. I was pleasantly surprised to see a lot of financial calculators built into the RIA Checkpoint research that I purchased for this season, and my tax software also has a loan amortization schedule free for all to use.
  3. Jack, please stop. This person has not slammed ATX in this thread, as was your prior complaints. He has also stated on several occasions that he purchased ATX in hopes of using it this year, but has also purchased Drake if ATX doesn't work well for his firm. He is allowed to ask questions here.
  4. I have a friend in Toronto that was without power a week or two ago and tried that exact flower pot idea. She was trying to keep 2 pet birds warm. It did give off some heat but was not enough. Maybe the room was too large. If you look at that room in the video, the ceiling isn't that high and goes to a point and the room is small, so the cubic feet he is heating isn't all that large. My friend retreated to her business location and camped out there overnight until power was back on at her home.
  5. Yes, that is correct. The 1099s and W-2s are created in Drake's CWU program, and you can do these as after-the-fact forms, no need to enter all transactions for the vendors or employees. In addition to getting a TCC by filing the From 4419, you will also have to create a user to file using the IRS' FIRE website. Also, it appears that the IRS as moved the date back to 2/3/14 for when the FIRE site may be used: http://www.irs.gov/Tax-Professionals/e-File-Providers-&-Partners/Filing-Information-Returns-Electronically-(FIRE)
  6. For the OP and anyone else that might be sending sensitive documents, it doesn't matter whether or not anyone here can provide an example of email hacking or not. The OP asked about emailing the returns to the bank, and he will either have to work within the bank's email requirements or send a paper copy using an expedited service.
  7. Gene, before advising your client, please be aware that HRAs, MERPS are considered employer-based health insurance benefits under the ACA, so this could affect how the employee answers questions when applying for insurance under the ACA going forward. Here's a link to an article that discusses it: http://ftwilliam.com/articles/AcctPlans13-54.html
  8. Your situation is not unique to Drake's software. All of the vendors do that, including CCH with ATX. I used ATX since the beginning and up until 2012. I paid for it, received it, and then requested a refund on 2/28/13 for the 2012 tax year, and I was cut off from their server within a matter of days. I still have each year's archive disks and installation codes, and I even still have 2009 through 2012 on this computer that I'm using, so I could use to produce paper returns and amended returns if I need to, but I no longer have access to the server for efiling through ATX or to download any updates from them. If you were using the 2012 program regularly, you should have the most up-to-date version on your machine, and there won't be any more updates to the 2012. Drake does have a download available for the 2012 archive version, but if you didn't download that before being cut off, you can't get to that now, but you could create a backup of the program that is currently on your computer. According to my program, the version is P2.1.7.2013.88, and the last 1040 program update was #88 on 11/15/13. Here are the others: 1120, #32 on 11/5/13 1120S, #24 on 8/26/13 1065, #28 on 8/6/13 1041, #13 on 6/27/13 990, #16 on 11/15/13 706, #4 on 6/6/13 Gift, #1 on 2/6/13 From that, if you've opened and updated the program after 11/15/13, you should have all of the updates.

    Take notes

Thank you Jack. This new member, gplvritis, probably didn't know about some of the ATX bashing that's gone on here and I don't think that was this person's intent. I'm glad you are helping him.
  10. I think this might be the listing of the screen codes for Drake that John was referring to: {deleted attachment} Sorry the title of the thread changed. I had to post this in the main forum and then merge the 2 threads, so this topic picked up my title. Sorry about that. Still learning some things.
  11. No, it can be in the individual's name. Here's from the 1040 instructions: The insurance plan must be established under your business. Your personal services must have been a material income-producing factor in the business. If you are filing Schedule C, C-EZ, or F, the policy can be either in your name or in the name of the business. If you are a partner, the policy can be either in your name or in the name of the partnership. You can either pay the premiums yourself or your partnership can pay them and report them as guaranteed payments. If the policy is in your name and you pay the premiums yourself, the partnership must reimburse you and report the premiums as guaranteed payments. If you are a more-than-2% shareholder in an S corporation, the policy can be either in your name or in the name of the S corporation. You can either pay the premiums yourself or the S corporation can pay them and report them as wages. If the policy is in your name and you pay the premiums yourself, the S corporation must reimburse you. You can deduct the premiums only if the S corporation reports the premiums paid or reimbursed as wages in box 1 of your Form W-2 in 2013 and you also report the premium payments or reimbursements as wages on Form 1040, line 7.
  12. Ed, I tested this out and it does work over on the official forum.
  13. Easytax, you can try the method below to see if it will create a clickable link that will launch the default email program. Be sure to remove the space after the first [ : [_url=mailto:[email protected]]mailto:[email protected]
  14. Easytax, here's how to do it: It should look like this without the spaces before and after the square brackets at the beginning and end: [_url_ ]your hypertext link here[_/url_]
  15. No, the policy would have to be either in the name of his business or an individual policy, or medicare. Also, his business would have to show a profit after deducting 1/2 s.e. tax and any related SEP-IRA, SIMPLE-IRA, or Keogh deduction. Also, he cannot deduct any insurance costs for any months he was eligible to participate in a subsidized group health insurance plan through his spouse's employer.
  16. I don't think the first post that creates the topic can be deleted by other than Eric or a moderator, subsequent posts can be though.
  17. jsh and Jack, enough already! jsh, I can see from Jack's quote of your post that you went back and edited it later. Publicly attacking another member won't be tolerated. Jack, maybe in future with these posts you deem to be sniping, you should ignore them by not answering those posters here that you feel don't deserve an answer or use the block function. Your postings of non-helpful comments that do not provide an answer merely to show that you won't answer a particular person only serves to add fuel to the fire.
  18. Yes, I assumed you are aware, but I thought I'd put it out there for anyone else that might read this topic since Jack stated otherwise.
  19. jshtax, obviously there's no issue with compatibility since both the ATX payroll compliance reporting and W-2/1099 programs operate as standalone programs, and anyone can purchase these separately without having to purchase the ATX tax preparation program. Each of these can be used for payroll and 1099 reporting even if you decide to prepare your clients' income tax returns using Drake software. You are correct that CCH didn't ruin the payroll programs by updating them to the Raven like it did with the ATX 2012 tax program.
  20. No, not a Catholic thing at all, although Epiphany is a feast day for Catholics but not a day of holy obligation on the Church calendar. The eastern religions (Eastern Christian Church, the Egyptian Coptic Church, and others) also celebrate Epiphany and consider it a very important holiday, only behind Easter and Pentecost (I think). The Greeks celebrate on a different day in January because of a different calendar that was followed. If you google "Epiphany", Wikipedia has a good history and talks of the other religions that celebrate it, as do some other sites that will come up, if you are interested.
  21. Three Kings Day is also called "Epiphany", "The Feast of the Magi", and "The Manifestation of God", and is the day that Jesus was revealed to the 3 kings (wisemen). The Eastern Christian Church celebrates the day of Christ's birth on Jan 6. And for many, the 12 days of Christmas are from Dec 25 to Jan 6 ending on Three Kings Day, and not from Dec 13 to Dec 25 as some celebrate it.
  22. None of the choices exactly fit for me. I take the tree down sometime after New Year's when I am done enjoying its beauty, but not specifically on the 6th.
  23. In answer to the bold above: Yes, it is. Yes, it is. No, the job of a preparer is more involved than that. That's not good enough. No, that's not true. Please review the EITC due diligence requirements, specifically the bullet points in the "Knowledge" section: http://www.eitc.irs.gov/Tax-Preparer-Toolkit/dd/lawandregs and Circ 230, and review the meaning of the jurat you sign on each Form 1040 that you prepare. Maybe you should lay off those chill pills for a while.
  24. The more important consideration is that if a preparer is doing a large number if EIC returns, the IRS can come in and choose a sample of those returns to test. Let's say they start by choosing 25 returns and find that the preparer's procedures and documentation are substandard. That's $12,500 in penalties. Now that's cost effective!
  25. I can't answer for John, but what I do is I review the actual return on the screen before printing it. When I am finished with my input, I click on "view" that calcs everything and brings up the forms to be printed in a list on the left side of the screen. It isn't all that different that what you see in ATX with the forms tabs over there. I can click on any of the forms, schedules, worksheets, and the letters that are listed to view exactly what the return includes.
