  1. Simple first day economics 101. In order not to have a deficit, you must NOT SPEND more than comes in. Our congress view on life: Increased revenue to the government = more to spend!!!
  2. Is it just me and my perception... The firm here has a lot of clients. I have been the one answering the "Stimulus" questions when they call. I am noticing that all the calls for "Where is my rebate", and "Why isn't my rebate larger", are coming from folks with no line 57 taxes, or received much more refund than the taxes withheld. Then the person calling usually challenges my answers based on "The people at work say...." Just ranting... My Grandpa used to say... "You don't look a gift horse in the mouth, and you don't clock free labor." Words to live by. I feel a bit better now!!!
  3. Tracking by EFIN would only apply to the current year installation. All prior years cannot be e-filed.
  4. Add me to the list Mel. If you need funds, don't be shy. I echo KC's sentiments. I would rather wait a year and give you time to do it right. No rushing quality.
  5. It is a variation of an old e-mail phishing scam. Common sense should always apply. 1) The IRS does not communicate to taxpayers via e-mail. 2) If it were the IRS, wouldn't they at least know your name?
  6. I had a client bring in 05, 06 & 07 to be done first week of April. She wanted to be sure to get her $600 stimulus payment. Here were the results: 2005 Refund $2,100 2006 Refund $1,807 2007 Refund $ 785 Does this make sense to anyone? Or am I the only one that thinks this situation is wacked? Sit on nearly $4K and wait till the "free" $600 is dangled out there to get it... We have had several clients with similar situations hurrying to get in by April 15.
  7. Your client owes me as well. Most of the money he owes came from other clients that he is ending up being billed for. Here are their names: 1) Can you wait a few days?? 2) I forgot my checkbook... 3) I've been your client for many years... 4) It's been a tough year and I am a little short on cash... 5) You know I'm good for it. 6) I need to get my refund before I can pay you. Please feel free to add to the list...
  8. I have been telling them "Since I have no control over how the IRS decides to administer this, 1-800-829-1040."
  9. I will wait till Jan 5 to renew, if I do. My wise old grandpa had 2 sayings... "You can't get a leopard to change his spots." "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me."
  10. And also tell them; "To avoid audit, do NOT cash the check. If you got direct deposit, you have no recourse, my fees to assist with audit are..."
  11. Subject: Stimulus Rebate Payments "Dear (insert client name here), The Congress passed the legislation, and the IRS is administering the program. I only have the information that the IRS puts out at www.irs.gov. There have been many news reports concerning these payments, and I make no assertions as to the accuracy of what is reported in the news. Also, I cannot change in any way the process (right or wrong) of the IRS in distributing the Stimulus Payments. My advice is: Wait till the IRS contacts you, and do NOT spend the money till it is in your hands or your checking account. By the way, the IRS phone number is 800-829-1040. Please do not call my office with questions concerning the rebate." Thank You for understanding. I sent an e-mail to all my internet savvy clients with these words.
  12. My town only had dial-up. I used it for years. Road Runner became available Mar 14, 2001. Mine was connected one week later. I was the 10th person to sign up. Talk about speed shock!! I went from being able to download at 4kbs to 450kbs. I will never live without High Speed again!!
  13. KC, you have my prayers for your situation. BTW, your inner beauty has been shining on theses forums, old and new, for many years now. Inner beauty is most important. Your husband is a lucky (smart?) man to have you.
  14. Before you give your clients information or advice, you should school yourself on the information first. The IRS has had a group of pages, with answers to all the questions you pose, since early March. Here is the link. It would be a good thing for you to do some research. http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=177937,00.html "Barbershop Tax Information" is worth exactly what you pay for it.
  15. We calculated that our firm saved over $1,200 each for the last two tax seasons compared to expenses the years before. Decided to buy instead of lease a commercial grade printer. I highly recommend this printer.
  16. At the firm where I work, 2,800+ returns this year, we have 2 Brother HL-5250DN black and white laser printers. It can be networked (already built in), or can be a direct printer. Cartridges can be refilled for about $12 each, or purchased refilled for about $30 each. Each fill gets about 7,000 pages. Printers cost $199 each. It has been totally compatible with ATX. The only down time was changing cartridges. It does duplex and watermarks. This is the second year use on them. When they die, we will dispose. We used 7 cartridges this tax season. Smartest move we made.
  17. If it did originate at the IRS, they would have at least known the taxpayer's name and SS#. I smell a SCAM! Although, the phone number is the IRS. I think I would shred it. If it were important, it would have had personalized information in the letter.
  18. Ohio as well. Just means that we should (must) check the return before submitting?? We have not been burnt, but have had to change several.
  19. The lawsuit alleged fraud and deceptive business practices concerning insurance policies issued. Client chose to settle rather than pay many times that much to fight the suit in court.
  20. Ditto here!! Please let us know the status, so all of us that benefit so very much from this resource can make sure it stays viable. If everyone donates an amount equal to what they perceive is the value, then you should not have any trouble staying afloat. Just be sure to keep us up to date!!!
  21. Client is an insurance agent. Lawsuit against him in 2000, he settled out of court for $6K. Can the settlement costs be claimed as business expense? I know the legal fees involved can. Any of you more experienced folks have information or opinions?
  22. What are you guy talking about again?? :scratch_head:
  23. Best just to paper file and attach a copy of the death certificate.
