  1. "How many people using Windows 7 are having the program crash issue?" Unfortunately, I must say that my stable pc config is using XP Pro SP3 as OS and I have these problems after one smooth and stable so far local installation of the program - I've never had such problems running ATX since 2009, including 2012 one. ... However just checked my sys info (again) and it seems 2GB RAM there!, so I am going to change this fact asap ... At the same time, I just came to mind something so I am going to check this now and will come back later. @ mcb39, joanmcq - Congrats! Lucky ones!
  2. ... hmm, for me too. Can open the program, everything is up to date, can change settings, can open the form itself!, and when I try to open a return ... program crashed!!! already hate those $hit2y updates
  3. This was my fifth attempt to download and install the 12.4 update and failed ...and when trying to close the updater nothing happens and have to use windows x button, following by immediate program crash msg. ... guess it's my turn to hang about on the tech support's helpline, lol Just realize, while reading here, that actually it is normal if the test return can't be open after the update so delete test return, update program and roll over new test return after the update - will try this now. Even tick off the Rollover when Available check box - will download the forms when IRS and CCH release them ... BTW, any other ideas what this means: " ... Update completed successfully! …93% Downloading 93 of 87 forms Processing 87 of 93 files." and if the difference in the numbers match the list of not released forms so far?
  4. "Anybody receive their 2012 Pub 17 yet? It has been on backorder for ever!" That's correct! Up to now, I also still haven't received mine, but got a cool feedback -- oh mister, there is still no final version of this publication prepared for printing and even released, let alone be printed! lol And even more funny was the next answer of the irs lady, about my early online order on pub 1518. I ordered this mid oct and (as advised) patiently wait to receive it in mid jan when I suddenly saw that "the 2013 Wall Tax Calendar is out of stock and will not be reprinted!" And got this -- ...hu, hu ... hmm, okay ... well mister, I am SO sorry there is no way to track your online order !, but let me see what I can do for you ... I am checking SB/SE site for you but this connection is very ...! .... took my name and address, hold me for a couple of minutes more on the phone and then -- mister, I am very sorry but publication is out of the stock and will not be reprinted! I said okay, I can understand your original way of cost cutting but why the heck you just took my name and address!? she sharply said because I wanted to try SB/SE site and make one more online order for you!!! No comment ... By the way which way of order you find more successful?
  5. http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/EITC-Income-Limits,-Maximum-Credit--Amounts-and-Tax-Law-Updates EITC Income Limits, Maximum Credit Amounts and Tax Law Updates
  6. yes, it is - sch C, EITC tax table and even shc C instructions!
  7. One more hint which I intend to use later, when they finish with this saga, and fix everything. I think to turn off "update everything at program start-up" function and perform this manually, on my personal occasional basis. It suppose to speed up your program as well.
  8. Well, I have the same bad experience as clay so far, but managed to run my ATX 2012 as admin and after installing the 12.3 update everything seems to be okay now! I can open a new return or roll over and open a return in a wink, can update forms and instructions, can see which forms have been updated so far and if instructions for them is available or not. It pulls out a report what forms are still not released by the IRS and thus not attached to your rolled over return. Everything with letters seems okay too. Two more thing I can advise. 1. Same as Lloyd Hudson, go and get your downloadable version of the program from the website, and install it. Don't know what is the difference(if any at all) between both set up files, but it seems there is such, and it is in favor of the web one. At least this is the one that works for me fine, on my XP, 2GB RAM machine. And download everything! Updates, forms, fixes, etc ... all they release for the program, and which is supposed to fix the program. You paid for this after all. 2. Check your Internet default browser. For the ATX purposes it should be IE, although I am using Chrome/Firefox now, do not update(and do not intend to update) my IE recently - it is version 7 now, and stay far away from this program, it still should be your default browser for ATX ... just use any other in all other cases Finally, CCH have a lot of things to do on the program's compatibility. Two short questions. - Did you have your 2012 Payroll Module installed, and do you find any relations between speed and performance of the main program while there is or isn't payroll module installed? - Do you know what is included in both 12.2 and 12.3 updates, and could this be one and the same, upgraded update? TIA

  11. It will be a real massacre if they don't update the deadline accordingly! "Of course, a very thorough review of the return will need to be done before it is efiled." Furthermore they wont process returns dated before Jan 30.
  12. With latest ATRA 2012 changes listed inside or? ...
  13. I think this is the best idea now, to share any experience we have fighting the new software so far. So here's my tribulations in brief: After one smooth and easy installation and three days of appearing the "max.shell.loader.exe" error, and reading the posts here I was able to solve this - loged as admin and process the first program update removes the error. But here comes another ... Another issue may be the access to the folders on your C drive. In addition to folders in C:Program FilesCCH Small Firm Services, you need to grant modify/writre access to the following folder as well: C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataCCH Small Firm Services! Watch out for Application Data folder cause this is one of the hidden folders on the pc, so you may need to change your Tools/Folder Options/View settings to make it visible for you. Another issue may be the printers installed to your machine, however I didn't get deeper into this so can't tell you any more than this regarding this scenario. If you want to print you returns into pdf, at this stage do not try to set any other printer than 'ATX 2012 PDF Print' as default! As advised it will be solved via future updates soon ... Finally I managed to open 1040 form, it is draft form, however any attempt to attach any other schedule to the return ends with program crash message. So waiting for the next update now ..... Also I see approx 7500 forms in my forms list (and also not all of them downloaded/available) so far, so it is a pity, but the one we can do now is wait ... and arm with all the patience in the world ... "Just out of curiosity, have you tried installing it on another computer?" There is a big chance for success, although there is no logic in this ... But the idea is good enough!
  14. wow, does this means that there is no solution to this so far!? I just got my ATX2012 installed and starts with this error message, he he ... Any suggestions?
  15. woooohoooo .... marvellous! http://www.taxpolicy...nsion-Bills.cfm http://www.cch.com/wbot2012/016AMT.asp liked these two, so going to read them now ... cya
  16. ha-ha-ha-ha :-) .... unbelievable! Two questions just come up to me out of all this, straight away. 1. I am in this area since 2004, so can anyone advise about such similar "pleasant events" in the past? I am just curious ... don't want to provoke any hot disputes here and now. 2. Can anyone post a correct link (if applicable) where all these bills (or at least re AMT) can be seen? Thank you.
  17. http://www.irs.gov/u...ical-and-Moving " ... In addition, the business standard mileage rate cannot be used for more than four vehicles used simultaneously." It is clear that it is okayed in the name of the Small Business but besides possible big discrepancies in reporting when using SMR or actual expenses method for more than 4 vehicles, I wonder why actually the business standard mileage rate cannot be used for more than four vehicles used simultaneously? Any info/thoughts shared will be more than welcome
  18. Looking again at pub 501, you will see: Example 2. You provided $3,000 toward your 10-year-old foster child’s support for the year. The state government provided $4,000, which is considered support provided by the state, not by the child. See Support provided by the state (welfare, food stamps, housing, etc.), later. Your foster child did not provide more than half of her/his own support for the year.
  19. Hi guys, Any hints about how to "express my intention" about the length and nature of stay in a foreign country, under the Bona Fide Residence Test on 2555 form in ATX - taxpayer didn't met any of the tests in the first year of the period, however fulfil both tests in the consequent year and clearly indicated willingness to reside and work abroad. Is there any checkbox or additional statement that need to be enclosed with the return as the ATX constantly showing some warning or error? Thank you in advance
  20. Sorry to hear this, KC. Wish you all the Power and Belief in the world! God knows best, but ... sometimes it's just not fair ... Keep walking!
  21. Pointless to say but (just to to dispel any doubts) the correct date is Dec 19 but not Dec 9. Wait to see what they will say...
  22. Although it comes from a newbie, one more vote for Independent Contractor. I am completely agree with OldJack. Besides, you can always check with the Service. http://www.irs.gov/B...d)-or-Employee?
  23. Lol, ha ha ha, KC, what a fun! And in the same time, a lot of good ideas and things to think about indeed ...
  24. Hi again. I see the enthusiasm in your eyes after my last topic, lol. But it is easy to be explained - there are a lot of more important things to discuss these days in the country ... Anyway, here's the next case. I believe most of you have heard about Australian Self Managed Superannuation Funds - these are trusts which manage the retirement contributions of people in Australia. They usually invest the funds and often invest in US assets. So the point is how to treat them from the US legislation perspective and what kind ot tax return they should file in case they need to file one. Is it grantor, simple or complex foreign trust. I realise this is rather legal than tax question, so feel free to move/delete this if needed. Any suggestions and shared good ideas will be highly appreciated though. Thank you
  25. Thanks a lot, KC. "But make sure that he understands that he still has to keep good records. In fact, in an audit, they are going to want to see repair bills to help substantiate the mileage reported." This is the first thing we cleared up after every submited tax return and before sitting for the next one. After a short discussion, it was decided to go on with the actual business expenses reporting as the client is okay with this. Funny but he is kinda man who likes to call the stuff with their real names, you know I must have missed that I.R.B. 10-51. In the same time this Techniques Guide is very useful indeed - the last revision of pub 917 I found was from 1995. Once again, thanks for sharing and sorry for the late post. Case closed.
