  1. Check the box on Sch E for final disposition.
  2. "Oh, we had a computer crash and had to start our QB file over from scratch. No, no backups either. Here's a PDF of my general ledger for that year." The IRS will also be looking for deleted invoices that might have been paid in cash.
  3. Ha ha! Yeah, that works!
  4. We use SUMo to check for updates on other software and have Flash, Java and most other programs checking for updates automatically. We don't wifi anything in our office. The thought of data being broadcast into the ether makes me nervous. We don't even allow wireless keyboards for the same reason. An IT guy I used to work with would drive around to various offices and connect to their open wifi, then go inside and show the owners how vulnerable their private data was. He got a lot of work that way.
  5. I'd be afraid the IRS would send both the extension and the check back if you used an extension form. Honestly, I'd have the client come in and use IRS Direct Pay. It will save them penalties and interest because it will post sooner.
  6. MD sends them to a bank box and the bank just slams them.
  7. That's why they're switching them to real time and releasing them as soon as they're available. I just don't want to updating every week instead of once a month, but security updates are important. We do a lot of work online.
  8. You're lucky NY sent it back. MD would have cashed the check and refused to send you a refund. One of my clients did the exact same thing several years ago. so we had a canceled check, made out to the US Treasury but MD had the money.
  9. JUST BUY SOMETHING, PLEASE!
  10. Just took the ATX survey and exactly zero of the listed enhancements were things I cared about. It seems ATX is focused in the wrong direction(s). The deadline to take the survey is tomorrow, Friday 5/20.
  11. That's one of the first things I do on a new computer. And I turn off the 'install recommended updates along with important updates'. Then when 2nd Tuesday updates are released, I usually wait a day or more and research online for any issues. Sometimes I just install the critical security updates and wait a little longer to install the rest. Are you saying you're going to hold off on security updates that will now be released randomly throughout the month, instead once a month like they are now?
  12. I had good luck Friday evening around 7. I think it's because it's payday for most people and many are shopping, dining, drinking, etc.
  13. Inventory is usually an additional amount above the asset sales price, because inventory varies constantly. And since this is a C corp, the tax rate is the same for gains on depreciated assets and goodwill. The IRS is normally concerned if too much is allocated to goodwill in an S corp or sole prop, to take advantage of capital gains rates, and avoid depreciation recapture at ordinary income rates for the seller.
  14. http://www.engadget.com/2016/05/18/microsoft-windows-7-service-pack/ I find this interesting: Going forward, Microsoft will offer monthly non-security rollups for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 via Windows Update. In other words, a single monthly patch will cover all non-security related fixes, while security releases will roll out whenever they're needed. ...but I don't look forward to multiple security updates during the month.
  15. The Atlanta address is where people file complaints about their preparer. Probably nothing to worry about though. https://www.irs.gov/tax-professionals/make-a-complaint-about-a-tax-return-preparer
  16. Looks like 1040 is still the number. https://www.irs.gov/uac/telephone-assistance
  17. If you're going to mail them anything, mail them a bill.
  18. I have one that's a list of faxes I've sent to the IRS so I know to look for a reply or do a followup. Another is a list of things to do that are urgent. One is a list of fiscal year clients so I know when my odd due dates are. One is an FBAR list. Instead of reaching for a pencil and paper, I create a sticky note. The data is saved (obviously) to a file, but you can't save them to another file. You can copy and paste into them. I have one that's made up of some spreadsheet cells.
  19. Millions waited longer this year too, and I'm fine with that. Some are still waiting if their APTC did not match the 1095A. I just faxed off a corrected 1095A today.
  20. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/using-sticky-notes
  21. Ctrl+T Ctrl+B is bold & Crtl+I = italics, of course.
  22. I've always had the philosophy of buying cheaper printers that would last only 3-5 years so I wouldn't get too far behind in technology. Also, the darn drums are sooooo expensive, it's usually cheaper to buy a new printer than to replace the drum. But the technology isn't really changing as fast as it once did. And I don't print nearly as much as I used to. Only went thru 6 reams of paper all of tax season, and my printer is the one that prints the returns.
  23. Shipping fee is now $69. Plus if they didn't ship it, we would not have to pay sales tax. I just have to think of it as part of the price, and I'm ok with that.
  24. The most important feature for me is ease of printing envelopes, both #10 and 6x9, but many printers don't even list this as a feature. How does this one so with envelopes?
  25. I have at least a dozen on my screens right now. If you want to make sure they're backed up the path is: C:\Users\[your name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Sticky Notes
