  2. Ctrl+T Ctrl+B is bold & Crtl+I = italics, of course.
  3. I've always had the philosophy of buying cheaper printers that would last only 3-5 years so I wouldn't get too far behind in technology. Also, the darn drums are sooooo expensive, it's usually cheaper to buy a new printer than to replace the drum. But the technology isn't really changing as fast as it once did. And I don't print nearly as much as I used to. Only went thru 6 reams of paper all of tax season, and my printer is the one that prints the returns.
  4. Shipping fee is now $69. Plus if they didn't ship it, we would not have to pay sales tax. I just have to think of it as part of the price, and I'm ok with that.
  5. The most important feature for me is ease of printing envelopes, both #10 and 6x9, but many printers don't even list this as a feature. How does this one so with envelopes?
  6. I have at least a dozen on my screens right now. If you want to make sure they're backed up the path is: C:\Users\[your name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Sticky Notes
  7. Just don't install any recommended optional updates until you're sure what they are. None of these updates for 10 were ever in the important updates section. The problem is there is a setting to include recommended updates with important updates. People who had that setting on, kept getting the nagware and even had 10 download automatically. I didn't get the latest 10 update because I don't have KB2976978 installed.

  9. Microsoft re-re-re-released the dreaded KB3035583 and a new Win10 update facilitator KB3150513.
  10. You record the donation at FMV and carry the investments on the balance sheet at FMV and have a net unrealized gain loss account in other income. The net unrealized account goes on part XI line 5. I've never used line 7 but I guess some people track it as an other expense and don't put it on Part IX.
  11. Got an email last week that said my online renewal is ready. Roughly 5% increase for Max from 1268.10 to 1331.10. Quote page had an error on it that added 69 extra to the total. Logged out and back in and total was correct. You can add/subtract items from your quote. Seems like a step in the right direction to me, since I can now just renew online without having to email/call my rep.

I'm using an SSD as my main drive and plan to convert all my computers to SSDs this summer/fall. I love it. It made my computer feel like a new computer. Fast boot and fast running many programs and windows utilities.
  13. That's a myth. The coffee was so ridiculously hot, it gave her severe burns and she had to be hospitalized. McDonalds was serving a dangerous product.
  14. No just send the Sch D. And you should only send a 1040 with a 1040X when it's a number that only shows on the 1040 like an IRA contribution or foreign tax credit that doesn't need an 1116. And you're supposed to type “Attachment to Form 1040X—Copy Only—Do Not Process” at the top of any forms.
  15. I've never used mailing slips for anything with any software I've ever used. I don't see the point. We use usps.com priority mail and print label and pay for the postage in one step. The envelopes are free too! Added benefit: address gets verified. Edit: The only con is you can't just use first class. But I want a tracking service anyway, when I mail something to a client.
  16. 225. I like to say 250 is my minimum, but I keep violating that rule. Edit: It would be 250 if a 1310 was involved.
  17. Partners have to pay tax on the cancelled debt of the partnerships they're part of. That's not unfair. The value of their partnership goes up more or less by the amount of debt cancelled.
  18. But the gain on the house would have happened in 2003. Would be really nice to have that return to see how much basis was claimed against the insurance proceeds.
  19. The IRS doesn't want a call. Sounds like it's just an FYI letter. I got one about 6 years ago where the IRS told their employer to change their W4 to Single 0, because client owed 2 grand every year and kept rolling over installment plans.
  20. Just count me in the better safe than sorry crowd: § 1.6081-4 Automatic extension of time for filing individual income tax return. (a) In general. An individual who is required to file an individual income tax return will be allowed an automatic 6-month extension of time to file the return after the date prescribed for filing the return if the individual files an application under this section in accordance with paragraph (b) of this section. In the case of an individual described in § 1.6081-5(a)(5) or (6), the automatic 6-month extension will run concurrently with the extension of time to file granted pursuant to § 1.6081-5. (b) Requirements. To satisfy this paragraph (b), an individual must— (1) Submit a complete application on Form 4868, “Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return,” or in any other manner prescribed by the Commissioner; (2) File the application on or before the later of— (i) The date prescribed for filing the return; or (ii) The expiration of any extension of time to file granted pursuant to§ 1.6081-5; (3) File the application with the Internal Revenue Service office designated in the application's instructions; and (4) Show the full amount properly estimated as tax for the taxable year. https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/26/1.6081-4 It's a stupid requirement and I hate it, but I'd rather pay a temp to enter liabilities based on prior year tax than zeroes.
  21. I would never file a zero extension. Unless the taxpayer legitimately expects to have a zero tax liability.
  22. You can prove that email didn't come from you by looking at the headers... if she didn't delete the email.
