"Placed with you" does not mean the court brings the kid to your house, it means the court granted you custody through either the foster care system or though some other court action. If a court action gives you custody [or joint custody] then you treat the child as your own for tax purposes, as long as you had that custody for more than half the year.

They need to file new W-4s that have a bit extra held out, if they want a larger refund. Although as long as they have some refund, they are actually OK.
-
Margaret, I agree with you, she can claim the child under the rule you cite.

However, in this case Chowdahead is asking about an efiled return. All I can suggest is the you look at the returns page 1 and make sure you see that LSE is clearly showing. If not, you might have missed a check-box. Although I d0n't think you need to do anything except add that worksheet, for the info to flow. I think it was probably just a screwup at the IRS end, because I've used it a number of times on efiled returns, and it has always worked perfectly.

Line 14? But seems like the proper way is to get the refund through the 1041, which would then be distributed to the benes.

FMV is what an independant buyer and an independant seller both agree on. So I don't see any loss over the closing costs. Appraisal is just an educated guess, while the sale is actual proof. Given the short time frame, it would be hard to justify taking such a loss.

I won't scold you. I agree with you. Besides, the correlation between warming on this planet and Sun Spot activity is still a LOT CLOSER than the correlation between warming and pollution. So until we figure out how to control the Sun, I think it is going to keep on happening that the planet warms and cools on it's own.

Then yes, it's almost certain that she got the $250.

From what I read on the Ohio Public Employee Retirement System website, they did not, but you'd have to check with them to be certain. Here's a link to the ways you can contact them. One way is the link on this page to their on-line help. https://www.opers.org/about/online/

I did not have much problem with Kiddy tax until recently. When it only applied to under 14 it did make a kind of sense, as it impacted basically those who moved income to kids to lower their taxes. But when they moved the age up, it suddenly is hitting a bunch of families that simply set up savings accounts for their kids to save for college expenses, and now, just as they near the age to begin using the money for that purpose, they are hit with these new taxes. But so much of our current tax code is unfair, as well as very overly complicated, that it is hard for me to single out just one of the changes.

I certainly don't believe that our flag represents tyranny. Although if Pelosi and Reid keep on the path they have been on, we are certainly getting closer to it. But I believe that is going to change this fall.

Yep! But to be fair, if Caribou had stopped working when it snowed or got below 20, they would have been closed for most of the season....... And also, Maine is prepared to handle the snow, because they get so much of it. Rome GA almost never gets any more than a dusting of the stuff. So they don't have the equipment to deal with a significant storm, they just advise folks to stay off the roads.

Just shooting from the hip here, no cite, but I'd assume it was for 2009, since he did have income from services in 09. For 2010, no services should mean no SE tax and no deductions, just a Line 21 entry. Hopefully the organization will give him a 1099Misc with the amount in box 3, not box 7.

I'll be praying for you all. Thank goodness you can still work anywhere you can access the internet.

If you use the full reply option, and select to turn off the emoticons, you should not get the smily face. Or else put a space between the b and the ). PS I fixed it for you.

She's being paid with academic credits rather than money, but that is still payment. I would not take that mileage, she is not going to the hospital as a charitable act, she is going to earn credits.

Well, I don't know the facts in this case, so I'm not going to take a side. But I do know that some times these 'rules' are adopted long after people move into an area. In which case Jainen's point is not so strong. Personally, I think any Medal Of Honor recipient should be allowed to fly the American flag as high as he wants to. But that's just MHO. Nor do I think the flag in that picture was excessively high or large. Of course, I admit I don't understand why anyone ever objects to the flying of our flag, unless it was one of those REALLY HUGE ones you see in some commercial locations.

When did she start getting the SS?

Here's wishing you a wonderful :bday:

You're welcome. It takes years to learn all the special terminology of tax work. That is one of the main reason so many people mess up using TurboTax, even the 'brilliant' ones like Geithner.

If you ALWAYS check those boxes, you might save a lot of time, over the entire season, by modifying the master to have them both checked. You can always uncheck any box if you need to.

It's highly unlikely that they will move a compliance audit. Seems your choices are to go there, at client's cost, of course, or engage someone else to meet with the auditor that day. Have the client 'out on business' if at all possible, for all but the first half hour of the audit. That way, if you inform the auditor, he has time to ask enough personal questions to satisfy himself that the tp is not hiding from him, but not enough time to do any real digging, for that he'll have to deal with the professional. A compliance audit is more detailed than a normal audit, so insisting that they deal ONLY with the tax professional will not work, IME.

Julie, the S corps may be members of an LLC. And LLC may not be a stockholder in an S corp. So the way you are talking about setting it up will work. You want to double check your state's LLC laws first, of course. In CA for example, the LLC will have an $800 minimum franchise fee each year, something that the clients need to be made aware of in advance.

Thanks for that bit of news! I had updated, but did not think about closing the program. You just freed up 4 returns for me!

I apologize for a too-fast answer, that sounds, on second reading, a bit smart-aleck and unfair. While my answer is true of some, there are lots of good reasons besides taxes for most decisions we make. The smartest 'tax' answer may be the worst choice, in some situations. My bad.
