MORE good news -- the same lady I spoke to called me back with resolution on the final of three issues I brought up -- barely an hour and a half after we talked.

Have no fear, Booger my darling -- the bricks are all buried under a couple of feet of snow, out back. They are safe from me. And I am safe from them. You may still LOVE me with all the adoration in your soul. And thanks for the chuckle. Here's some GOOD news for all regarding support -- I just called ATX and, in less than 12 minutes, I got through the automated "update" ("unable to locate" my e-return), got to a _person_ (the trick is to keep punching in zero's until the auto system gives up on you), and she was able to submit an EFC check-into-this request on one return (11 days and no ack) and "re-hang" (sounds painful) the ack's on two others and I got them on my program! These are great, thanks for posting them. I've sent the list to my daughter, who has been very aggravated lately with a series of very lame poems to analyze for her English class. Catherine

Yes, but sometimes I'd rather hit myself in the head with a brick. It will hurt less and be over faster.....

Welcome back, Wayne! Catherine

I've been meaning to inquire, as well. Hope he's doing really well. Catherine

If you are signed up to e-file W-2's and check SSN's with Social Security, you can check the validity of the number there. But whether or not you can check beforehand, get a copy of the card, and amend after the return and refund have been processed. Hi up in Exeter; just a bit north of me. Mom of one of my college friends lives in your town. Catherine

Here's how to check stimulus amount when the site is down
Catherine replied to tilt's topic in General Chat
I had a weird amount on one; $513 and change. AND I had one where the website payment listed was $20 off from the form they got sent (one of the few who brought the bleeping form). I've just been checking the website for every client anyway. And I've got one coming in that got way less on their stimulus payment than the IRS on-line estimator last year indicated; that one is going to need investigation too. Catherine -
There was a "poem" (term used advisedly) in MAD Magazine a gazillion years ago about a professor who taught English Lit; in fact, he taught everything "lit". I think I had that professor (years later).

And now my file folder order is delayed, too. Not my day. :(

I've been waiting all weekend for 8453-F to be released today (Friday the ATX website said 2/9 release). I have five trusts all ready and waiting to go, just needed that last e-file form release. This morning it said 2/9. This NOON it said 2/9. But NOW it says 2/13. ARGHHH!!!! GRRRRR!! And phooey, too. Guess it's time to hope that Friday the 13th turns out to be a lucky day for me. Grumble. It's a good thing Booger says he loves me, or I'd be seriously ticked off right about now. Catherine

'Cuz you're just ten times as special??

Well, I get off easy -- I can answer all kinds of annoying software/procedural stuff, and then I get answers to all my tough questions in return! So I love you right back. (Marilyn -- you, too. And everyone on this board. I am an equal-opportunity appreciator! ) Catherine

Click on the e-file and get the boxes to choose what returns to e-file. Select Federal and then one state gets to piggyback and the other is sent standalone. Unless both states require standalones. What you can't do is piggyback two states. Catherine

How Much Was My 2008 Stimulus Payment Site not available?
Catherine replied to Jack from Ohio's topic in General Chat
Want to _really_ make them complain PLUS start some neurons firing about how much tax they (we) all actually pay, after you show them Line 72 (amount overpaid), point out to them Line 61 (total tax) and show them how much is being _kept_. At least then maybe they'll complain to their congresscritter (and vote in someone new 2 years from now). If enough of us do that.... Catherine -
It's basically a "warranty" in case the program screwed anything up. If _you_ messed up, it would be your E&O insurance on the hook. And the returns most likely to want sucha product (those with schedules C, E, and F) are not eligible. I put the existence of such a thing in my "welcome to tax season" letter, but have not so much as mentioned it in passing in person. Catherine

No statement to explain why there is no extra $10K of income?
-
But the 10% penalty wasn't due in 2007 -- the client had until March of '08 to find a house before the early withdrawal penalty kicked in on this last portion. Therefore, it's a penalty due in 2008. Catherine

Client took mucho money out of IRA in late 2007 for first home purchase. No, she did NOT check with me first. She paid the early withdrawal penalty on all but $10K with her 2007 taxes, and paid income tax on the total. She ended up NOT finding a house within the time limits (which expired in first quarter 2008). So now she owes penalty on the $10,000 as well. But it was all on the 1099-R for 2007. Any better way to handle this in ATX besides putting the penalty amount on Line 1 of the 5329 and then adding a statement explaining why this amount is not included in income? Thanks. Catherine
