  1. Now that you need a PTIN to efile, make it that the ONLY way to efle is with a current PTIIN and with professional software
  2. With out questions, prayers for you and Don
  3. As has been said before on here or the other board, tax software does not make a tax preparer, the john q public does not know enough to know something is wrong. have fix a number of turbo tax and have always made a client for life, especially when they deal with IRS on a CP2000 becasue they forgot something
  4. And in The Tax book, page 1-2 for years 2012-2007 All it takes is for them to not file one time, with stock sales, and get the "heart attack letter", taxes on $200,000 of stock sales, tax, interest, penalites and neg Penalties equal 75K at least When in doubt file the return as has been stated above
  5. New phone message: Thank you for calling, I am not answering the phone today, the more time I spend on the phone ansereing, "How are you coming on my return" and then spending 10 min listeing to your need for the tax return because you have some bill that is due tommorow, and OH by the way you still need to get me ...... and once I get that information, which I told you about when you dropped off your work 3 weeks ago, then I will be done with your return in about anohter week. And by the time I talk with 25 to 30 calls, most of the day is gone, and I have not got a thing done So have a nice day, leave a message and I will call you back this evening before I close up for the day, hope you like phone calls after 9 pm It must be March Maddness
  6. I am going to get yelled at, but in my oppion, this is good move and jainen is right, and if their was a way that you must have a PTIN to efile, and the off the self software was only good for one person that would go along way to stopping some of the fraud, and if congress would get out of the social engering with the refundable credits, or make all the refundable credits jump the hoops like they finally did with the Home buyer credit. Or maybe split the refunds up, IE if refund or the part that is from taxes withhleld goes out right away, then the rest is subject to review, which make take serveral months. Another would be to make the W2 processing the other way around, send to IRS first, so they have it one record, then start the efile in Mid Feb and move the due date back to april 30 or May 15 if needed.
  7. If from an Individual Retiment Account, and absent any 8606, non deductiable IRA, then 100% taxable, If from an Individual Retirment Annunity, then you need more information, IE how much invested, But from what you described, I would assume the first and tax at 100% as long as no 8606 in prior years tax returns
  8. Had the same problem with my daughters return, back in Feb. 9325 said not accepted, but the IRS took the payment as I had entered in the transmission. Not sure why this happens but it does, last year at extension, had two clients make extension payments, file the extenisons april 1, panic on my part, called efile help desk, they said all was set to go, not really trusting the IRS asked the cleint to tell me when payment was made and in both cases on the 15th as plan might check with efile help desk to see what they are showing.
  9. Beause many times the investment "experts" do not understand that EA's , they are taught only to look to CPA's when there are really good EA's around
  10. Normal = 50 hour weeks instead of 80+ Phones not starting at 730 am and asking were is my, refund, tax return, just checking to see if you need any thing and when do you think you will be done, and they are the ones who did not listen when I said they would be lucky if I called them in two weeks, and they only drop off information yesterday
  11. I just efiled a clients mother without any problems, paid the taxes all is well, had to paper the state of AZ, because they wanted a copy of the DC for the $25 refund As to charging for clients children, do not comit to the free ones until I see what they have, and then I just love the ones that the child files for free on line, takes there owen PE and then I get to charge for fixing two return, or fix one, paper file parents. When that happens the next year I have all of the returns, makes life easier for all.
  12. not sure about the above, but a good single malt, though out the afternoon and evening, does wonders
  13. If they did simplify the tax code, it would last about one year, there would be such an out cry from the 49% or so that do not pay any income tax, that congress would start to fiddle with the tax code again call social engerning, that we would be back to what we know have in one election cycle And if they had a simple tax code how are the politicians going to payoff there contributors legally
  14. Had the same problem with extension payments, When I look at the 9325, it was marked that the IRS did not accept, did some home work, on the April 18, found out that the IRS did take the extension payments (two were sent for the 15th) 3rd for 18th (one of the extension payemnts was my own) and found out from the e help desk that the one for the 18th was good to go. Turns out the ATX had a bug that was checking the wrong box on the 9325. this was only affecting the extensions. When I fill out the information, I look at a check and enter all the MICR informaiton (expect for the check number) including any leading zeros
  15. The one I like is the self employed person only took 30K out of the buisness, the buisness nets 45K, has paid not 1040ES and he owes 7K doesn't understand why, wife also has w2 with holdings Duu, even with only 30k taxable (his number) let's see income tax at 15% self employment (what is that, thats a 10 min discussion) at aprox 13% net. equals 28% on 30k income equals ? (8400) still doesn't understand, whats to look for more recipts leaving town Sunday, put return on extension with no payment not my problem if you bookkeeping is not up todate and you did not talk with me this last year, even a year ago we talked about the need to estimates and to come in see me about aug or sept to see how the taxes were going. Just love them
  16. I am sure my phone will ring off the hook on the 19th or 20th with all the call backs, from whomever, but then that is what voice mail is for and then the double 77 (delete) if it is a non client
  17. new client, do return, gets 400 refund, looks good to me, compare to last year 4,000 refund. ok why, big loss on sales etc, long story short, zero taxable income 4,000 in withholdings. now he said "I always get 4k refund". OK, send last 5 yrs returns, yes tax is about 4k per year, as was this year, 2009 was exception, but his withholdings go from 10k 5 years ago to 4500 this year, what's wrong with this picture? client "DAA I quess changing my W2 does have an affect on the refund." gotta love them, he paid bill even for the extra time and said he will see me next year, we will see.
  18. new clients try that with my office, I tell them I would be glad to do it, rate is $75 be hour for bookkeeping, with a 5 hour min. charge, which is payable up front. but also tell them that most of the time they are looking at more time because there will always be questions as to what a receipt is for and when you figure that each time you call it is at least 10 min percall assuming you get them on the first try and more that likely it will be closer to 10 hours before your done and oh my the way, if you do not pay all fees before return is filed, you will only get back your receipts. so far never been taken up, but have gotten some very good clients out of this and have been with me for a long time. They just need to understand that what you are selling is your time and expertise in doing what you do. most people can add up receipts.
  19. another case of taxpayer thinking that the IRA is a savings accoount, and also not talking to his/her tax perparer, and not listening to the person at the 1800 no help explain about the taxes and the 10% and like you said, you can not fix stupid, time to pay up
  20. And that is the reason when family and friends ask me to look at their "self Prepared" I tell them without the detail, the math is correct, but there are too many moving parts to make sure they have done it correctly. And if they what me to review the return make an appointment and bring your check book and my hourly rate = and It will take a min of 1 hour to review the return. Usually they say that is ok, and when the IRS sends them a notice, I see them next year and they are happy to have me prepare their returns.
  21. the 50% of parcel B that went to W, would get another step up in 2000 when W passed
  22. this is posted on the "offical" ATX commuity for what it is worth Business E-file and Business States info 3/16/2010 Updated 03-15-10: Missing acknowledgments – We are currently working with the IRS to clear up some outstanding acknowledgments for business e-files that were submitted over the past 3 days. All outstanding items have been identified and a trouble-ticket submitted to the IRS to have the acknowledgments re-posted. If you can see your business e-file in the Return Query/Return Status tool on the Support site (but it does not have an acceptance or rejection date), you can assure your clients the returns are time stamped and will be considered timely filed. Once the IRS re-posts the acknowledgment file, you will receive your acknowledgment, and the status on the Support site will be updated. Updated 03-12-10: Extension acknowledgments – Acknowledgments for extension e-files may take up to 48 hours from the time the returns are drained to be processed, especially as March 15 approaches. If less than 48 hours have passed since your business extensions were
  23.
