  1. I think you get to it from the EA renewal page. (I'm on my way to Knott County, Kentucky, with Appalachia Service Project making homes warmer, safer, and drier.)

    Payroll

I have clients that use Paychex and are happy. I've also used the People's United Bank payroll called Encore Online that is really Sage. And, for clients already on QuickBooks, the QB payroll has some advantages but keeps going up in price.
  3. I had a long-ago client with a Keogh plan with both a Profit Sharing Plan as well as a Money Purchase Plan component. I think it was a Keogh. She was self-employed. (Left for cheaper preparation.)
  4. So sorry. Prayers to all. A client's brother in his 20s, similar story. Way too young. We need to work on mental health for all.
  5. Yes. (Often, the free versions of software are for home use only.)
  6. Yeah, paper. Let the IRS argue with the ex if they want.
  7. My software has a List feature. I click on the icon anytime I want a detailed list behind a line. Utilities, for instance, in office in home; out here in the boonies that's oil and electricity and maybe something more specific to that client's house like propane. I even use it for just one item when I want to remember where it came form. For instance, when the mortgage interest is paid to ABC Bank; so if I get a 1098 next year from XYZ Bank I ask them if they refinanced, got a HELOC, forgot to bring me ABC, whatever. They think I have a great memory when I ask about their alarm system expense, for example, that they had last year but forgot this year. Helps for nurses and such that have various license renewals that might be every two years or one or three. I use List a lot.
  8. Malwarebytes and other things my IT guy understands but I don't.
  9. There are wall mounts that adjust, swing out, etc. And, floor stands like the TVs I watch while on the elliptical machine at my gym. And, stands that clip onto a desk or shelf. Lots of ways to mount monitors.
  10. I have two portrait for tax returns so I can get a whole page on the screen and a third landscape that has email on the right and Chrome on the left with tabs for message boards, email programs for my two largest biz clients, etc. I use the landscape to open Excel spreadsheets. I love three monitors.
  11. Please don't laugh at me. I did that. My Dell fans kept breaking and overheating the computer and frying the motherboard and video card, and Dell argued before they'd send out a tech to replace the fans again and again. So, I brought out my small fan I bought for Appalachia Service Project and set it on the floor with the CPU, aiming at the area with the most faulty fan. I nursed it through the prior tax season that way. It bought me time until I was less busy and could accept the replacement they sent me and set it up. My feet and legs got really cold during that winter, because the computer and fan were on the floor under the "table" that reaches out from my desk. Lots of air circulating. But, not overheating with the fan sitting there. I'm all for free, low-tech solutions to high-tech problems.

  13. And, starting with them now, you know where they came from, where the numbers are coming from.
  14. Aren't distributions from a Roth considered to be from the contributions first and, therefore, not taxable? Only after the taxpayer has taken out all their contributions and is finally taking out earnings do they have taxable distributions, right? Or does it change for converted amounts?
  15. I ran it on my desktop. Disabled now. Then I ran it on my laptop. Some time back, the laptop upgraded itself to 10 but was waiting for a response from me. I did not Agree, so it went back to 7, very slowly. When I ran Never 10 on my laptop, it reported thousands of 10 files. One click and a couple of seconds, and all is gone. Thank you, thank you!
  16. In my Nook, I can arrange by categories as I choose (although, it'll suggest, too) and search by title, author, how recently purchased, etc. The books are ours. Hubby uses the app on his iPhone, iPad, etc., to read also, but my iPhone screen doesn't work with my old eyes for prolonged reading. I have read from my desktop, though, when it's research for something I'm working on on my other monitors.
  17. One nice thing about our Nooks, old as they are, is that everyone in our family can read the same books, even our grown daughter who doesn't live with us. (Hubby would buy a Nook and then hand it down to me when he wanted a newer one and then to our daughter as we handed down again.) When he buys a book or downloads a free book, magazine, whatever, we all have access to it.
  18. We both have Nooks (Barnes & Noble) and love them. I bought an iPad Air thinking for travel. Used it for email but not for much serious work, even the spreadsheets that I thought I'd do on it. Now my husband is using it for his travel computer (mostly sitting in waiting rooms) and as a reader and email and internet and everything when he doesn't want to walk upstairs (it's hotter up there) to his desktop computer. Movies, too, and TV like UConn basketball games when I want to watch a TV show. He loves it and uses it all day/night long for all the various purposes. I continue with my large laptop for mobility and my desktop for work (home office) and my iPhone 6 Plus (the larger screen for my old eyes) when it's too much trouble to take my large laptop. So, I still take my Nook with me for reading and minor internet with it's larger screen than my iPhone 6 Plus. I looked at the Surface Pro and loved it, but then loved the Surface Book even more with it's larger screen, more USB ports, and substantial cover for both protection and privacy. A flat, light-weight laptop. I may order the Surface Book soon.
  19. Thank you, to the most Normal guy I know. I clicked. It told me the update was Enabled even though I thought I'd done everything all of you recommended. I clicked to Disable. I guess all is good. I did NOT get anything saying I have Win10 files. Thanx for sharing. Going to go do this on my laptop now.
  20. Limit QB copy for IRS audit My client is being audited by IRS- The agent wants an electronic version of the books - basically a copy of the QB file. Is it possible to limit the backup to only include the transactions relevant to the year being audited? We are trying to avoid a "fishing expedition" but also want to get this audit over with asap. Any suggestions? Asked byDEjan728 QuickBooks Accountant 2012 3 years ago Options RECOMMENDED ANSWER 1 person found this helpful Using your accountant's version, you can create a "period copy" including only the year being audited. File > Utilities > Condense Data. Remove transactions before and after the year needed. Was this answer helpful? Yes No Memere AllStar 3 years ago 1 comment Thank you!! 21. Were the stocks sold before the divorce? If not, who received the proceeds?
  22. I'm not a QB expert, but starting with about version 2012, QB has an option to carve out one or more years for this very reason, so you can give the IRS auditor the QB file for the year(s) he requested but no more. The IRS bought a bunch of QB licenses and trained some of their auditors in QB.
  23. Yes, some of the IRS numbers answer into the evening, and many people stop calling by 5 p.m. or earlier thinking the IRS keeps normal office hours. Some of the more specialized numbers close by 5 p.m. But, I've had good luck in the evening. Also, early morning as I'm on the east coast (but I'm not a morning person).
  24. Had a different client, prior year return, who received an IRS letter checking his identity. They caught a fraudulent return. Called CT, and they'd already removed the fraudulent return. Very quick. The two above, two months before any communication. One without any explanation even when getting through to a real person, just that refund will be mailed on a certain day. Other, no info available when speaking to a real person, just a letter that they will receive another letter 31 May. The retired guy was calling constantly.
