People in the south don't think about how much our tires are worn because the steel rims on the horse-drawn wagons we all drive never wear out. Wen we need extra traction in the muddy streets, we just throw a few bales of hay and some jugs of moonshine in the back of the wagon and wrap some barbed wire around our bare feet. We don't know anything about freezing temperatures because we all lie around snoozing in the hot sun all day.3 points

But they are great for research & surfing this board. I have it open on my iPad (like I'm posting this on it) and it frees up my computer & monitors for work.3 points

I'm doing fine with my stand-alone system and with ATX this year....but perhaps Jack should stop by Sidney, OH for a visit so I could treat him to a Big Buy and some pie at The Spot restaurant!3 points

Skip the tablet. Laptop or desktop. I will always have both a desktop and a laptop. Tablets are laptops that were born prematurely. They act like and pretend to be a computer.2 points

Could be a symptom that your mouse is beginning to develop a problem, tho. I had that problem last year, and as the problem came and went, it took me a while to figure it out. Might want to consider buying a 'backup' mouse, just in case.2 points

I had serious issues with 2012 ATX - you have all heard them. somehow Jack and I emailed and he offered to come all the way up from Ohio to Northern WI to fine-tune my computers and the ATX program. We worked out payment - I paid for airflight - my husband hemmed and hawed and it went up $100 or so in the meantime! I had a voucher at the Holiday Inn from a benefit and the car rental was insignificant and I paid way too little for his help that day! My office manager and I learned a ton and he really cleaned up the system, etc. A great learning experience and I did not have to bring my IT in, brought in someone who knew ATX instead. If you have any issues - I highly recommend Jack. Even my husband came around as Jack's knowledge of computers as well as ATX is superb. Plus we had a great dinner and then he got to see the great Northwoods! God's Country1 point

I agree with mcb39. I am typing this on an XP machine that is still cooking along just fine. i don't use it for tax prep but for research and working spreadsheets you just can't beat it. This machine is one of the most solid machines I have ever purchased. It is now 12 years old, memory maxed out but still is as reliable as ever. I have an older laptop that is the same way. Neither of these machines can handle the new tax software but I just can't see getting rid of them. Both are Dell's and the desktop is the best.1 point

Jack well deserves the kudos. He may occasionally be a bit gruff, but he is really trying to help us all.1 point

The rent was never deductible in the S Corp in the first place because of related party rules. Assuming the LLC is cash basis, more than likely, there is no debt to forgive, unless the unpaid rent was converted to a legal note with stated interest and regular payments. If the S Corp has been taking a deduction for the unpaid rent and letting that flow to his 1040 you have a big problem, both the 1120 S returns and the 1040 returns will need to be amended. Potentially, accuracy penalties will apply, if not worse!1 point

People here in MA started panicking after the big blizzard in '78 when the whole state was shut down for a week. I don't get it, myself -- we all have plenty of food in the pantry or cabinets (although possibly not people's favorites - whoopee). As far as the shovels go -- they do break! We replaced a bunch of them after last winter that were well past their "use by" date, and this winter bought another because the one we leave out front for the front walkway has a crack in it. One of these shovelfuls and it's going to let go, and then we'll need the new one that's waiting.1 point

Jack -- My web site file share portal has a place for "public" documents -- I can set up a file and access there. PM, email or call if you want to use that route.1 point

Terry: Sounds like your client has some tax problems. He deducted rent in the S-corp for payment to the LLC which owned the building. Then carried a rent due on the LLC, but, he deducted it on the S Corp and never picked it up most likely in the LLC. So, he dodged taxes there. Now, in the defunct S-Corp, he wants to write off the Debt with a 1099-C that *doesn't* pass thru (although it *can* create basis for a shareholder...), and then pick up a loss from the rent not paid. Ok. Sweet, lets deduct it again... And then he just sold the building, hopefully to an unrelated party for a nice profit, and owes taxes on the sale... So, how can we create a loss out of thin air? If we were working for one of the "Final Four" I am sure the boys there could have ran the sale, with knowledge before hand, thru three or four entities and hide the profits that way... But, we don't. Technically, I would draw a straight line thru the entire deal, and end up with this: He underreported the rent collected, and over deducted in the S-Corp. Then he sold it for a profit. All the pockets are the same. Therefore, I would ignore all the rent back and forth because it is bogus. And report the sale on the building. I could be wrong. But issuing that 1099-C? Would look like mal-practice to me. Unless, you have more info that you haven't provided, and I am just paranoid. Rich1 point

Latest on my workaround. I am working on a method of allowing people to download the necessary file. As soon as I have it in place, I will post here. Thank you for your patience.1 point

What I don't get is every time it snows the news shows how hardware stores can't keep up with the demand for shovels.. Do people think they are disposable and only good for one snow? Do they think with global warming they will never need a shovel again? I have the same shovels that I bought 16 years ago when I bought my house. I did add to my collections as my children grew and needed bigger shovels to help out.1 point

It happened one time while I worked there (Caribou office). We had to start late after getting 20+" of snow over night. The roads were clear, but we couldn't get to the building without digging a tunnel. "Piled up" probably literally. Here are a few photos from Birmingham Alabama. Almost makes you feel sorry for insurance companies. Just kidding, nothing makes me feel sorry for insurance companies.1 point

We have friends in Kennesaw which is where ATX is and it took him 4 hours to go less than a mile. Traffic was really piled up.1 point

When you click on the green arrow in the box for depreciation on the form, it should ask you if you want to get a fixed asset worksheet or go to the vehicle worksheet. That should bring up the fixed asset worksheet with the 4562. Tom Hollister, CA1 point

I run two satelite offices (the are not in malls, but in small offices), and we use a laptop. I want to be able to take all my records and the computer off site any time I am not there. Security. I have a pretty powerful laptop, and we keep all the files updated on each machine after each day. I never thought about networking them, but I guess it could be done, but we don't do it. The biggest challenge is to make sure you have access to all the data and files you need. We try to work by appointment only in the satellite offices, but you never know when someone is going to "drop in for just a second to get this knocked out". When you don't have thier physical file on hand, it can sometimes be challenging. If you have any specific questions, just ask. Tom Hollister, CA1 point

I have heard that there has been a LOT of pressure brought to bear on Microsoft. And, don't forget the many, many owners of personal PCs who cannot afford and/or shouldn't have to dump a perfectly good machine just so they can do online shopping or whatever. As for ATX, I already knew in 2011 that my XP machine was not going to be able to handle the program for another year. It was really churning by the end of 2011 and has been updated to the max.1 point

Keep in mind....the IRS doesn't make the law either. They are only responsible for collecting the tax. Congress makes the law....and the law is open to interpretation. The IRS publications aren't the law either...just the IRS interpretation of the law. And that was told to me at one of those IRS conferences. (In other words....what you read in a publication is NOT the final word.) So...next time I adopt a tiger....I will deduct the adoption fee!1 point

Anyone remember "Wrist Rockets"? They were a slingshot that wrapped around your wrist to give you more power. Every squirel, bird and occasional cat (when no one was looking - sorry cat lovers) that got in my way when I was 10 got hit by that thing. Incredibly powerful. Tom Hollister, CA1 point

All our Austin (and surrounding areas) schools were closed today. We had some rain but minimal, if any snow. But the temps have been below freezing most of the day. It's currently 34 degrees at 4PM. So, the roads have been icy & there have been lots of wrecks. Yep, the folks in the southern part of the US do react differently to snow than most of the rest of the country. But we see it so seldom and just don't have the experience driving on it. Oh, and we don't have the equipement to handle much more than sanding a few bridges. We're used to being laughed at for closing for one snowflake!1 point

Chapter two: Because Jack's flight home got cancelled due to weather; I got to spend a day and a half with him after he left WITAXLADY. I am about thirty miles away from her and close to the airport. We had planned on visiting for a few hours before he had to fly out. Instead, he was grounded. He then spent half a day in my office just talking and fine tuning. The following day, my husband and I took him on a tour of the Northern half of the state. We were both extremely impressed with Jack's knowledge, professionalism and downright great personality. We got to enjoy two meals with him before getting him back to the airport for his (again delayed) flight. However, he did have to enjoy the airport for a while, but eventually got home all right. The moral of the story is; if you have a question about ATX, ask Jack. Don't intimidate him, but trust him. I didn't have serious issues such as DE experienced, but I can recognize intelligence when I see it; and Jack has done, and will do, more for the users of ATX than you can imagine. I have been in touch with him throughout the beta testing and going forward. Jack never fails to return a PM. Thanks, Guy!!1 point

However, non-pet-acquisition-related donations of food, bedding, toys, cat litter, etc., to shelters IS a non-cash charitable donation. I have some clients who donate bags of dry food etc. every year to the shelter where they got their pets some years ago. It's a special trip to the pet store, with register receipt and thank you from the shelter.1 point

Here is an example of the designers listening.... You can read this in the notifications in Return Manager Program and Forms Updates- Keep all your systems updated to the latest versions Based on customer feedback, we have separated the Program and Forms update buttons on the ATX 2013 toolbar. When these buttons are red, updates can be downloaded for either category. When the buttons are green, you know that you already have the latest update. You can also schedule your updates in "Preferences" to occur automatically, at start-up, or at a particular time. Note to networked users: You update each computer on the network- simply click the Program and Forms update buttons at each workstation. If you have a server-only installation, you will need to download and run the update on the server. Login to the Solution Center and pull down the program update from the site. This site contains several educational topics, including installing, networking, and updating your software http://www.atxinc.com/education_library/1 point
