  1. Coming to pick up their return, brought me 5 boxes of Girl Scout cookies. And were thrilled when I told them about the passive loss c/f that will be freed up in 2014 since they just sold their rental. They're in a happy shock. I'm in sugar shock!i

  2. 7 years ago today, my high school sweetheart and wife of 17 years passed away. Some of you were with me in spirit then (on old ATX forum) and offered words of encouragement. Thank you. Life is a crazy-magical thing....the door closed on that part of my life....and another opened just a few months later....affording me the opportunity to spend the 2nd half of my life with a grade-school sweetheart. During this time of year that is so filled with tax returns and clients....a take a little time to remember and be thankful. The motto I've learned to live by: "Shit happens...get over it...live happy"

  3. I'm going to have a forced break starting in about an hour. My BFF is coming over to have her return prepared while she goes over to town to pick up some supplements for her horse. This is the one return I do as a waiter. I only see my BFF about twice a year now and told her no time for a visit. That means she'll only stay about 2 hours. I think I'll go make some chocolate muffins and put on a fresh pot of coffee for us.

  4. ...and the fundamental reason why socialism doesn't work. When step #1 must benefit someone other than self, step #1 doesn't get taken. Turn it around -- every two boxes they buy for themselves you will buy ONE box for the office to share. THEN you'll get sales!

  6. I had sort of a time out yesterday because I had three clients in here picking up who apparently needed to chat, I mean spill their guts, with somebody. I was completely worn to a frazzle from this nodding and listening and not saying anything. But, evidently, that's what they all needed. When it got quiet in here, I just looked around, told myself, "I'll think about this tomorrow. After all tomorrow is another day," got my purse, went home, ate Bojangles chicken like there was no tomorrow. But there was, so I'm back.

  7. I took one on Monday, but it is worn off. Just had to thank my husband this morning for all the help and support that he has been this year. He doesn't know how to turn on a computer, but he sure is good with a broom and a shovel. Not complaining about erratic meals is the really biggee.

  8. Yes, we were with you then as well as when you found more happiness. I love your attitude. It's probably why you attracted two wonderful women -- plus all of us friends, too!

  9. I haven't seen him so far this season, and I'm not liking that.

  10. I have been wondering what happened also. He morphed into Mr Pencil, but seems to have disappeard around the 1st of February. I am praying that he is just swamped with work and nothing has happend to him.

  11. I'm with Lion on this. I find it's easier to delete the 1099-G and type the refund directly into the Line 10 worksheet (jump to from Line 10) field in ATX. No EIN needed, and never had a problem with this. It would be even easier if ATX didn't insist on adding the 1099-G form every year.

  12. I agree with you that this is a really big plug. I do have her complete bank account download and can do some double checking. I am an actual accountant and do understand all the debits and credits. I think there is something wrong in her spreadsheet but for the life of me I can't figure it out. Like I said, she is not a big help as she never understands why I might need additional information and why I end up charging her for 20 hours at the end of the year. We go though this every year. I think I will work to get her bank statements monthly next year and do all the bookkeeping in QB and I bet my bill to her ends up being the same over the year without all the frustration. If she refuses, I will let her go to someone else.

  13. In the 1099-INT detail screen, you can click on a column heading to sort on that column.

  14. I told him to paper file NY.because at that point he wasn't planning to show the gain. Turbo tax was rejecting it for e-filing and I didn't really want to get involved with his mess. He wasn't aware that he could paper file....or amend....based on his 90 minute experience with tech support at Turbo Tax. Long story short..he decided to show all the income (after I explained that an acceptance was only technical and that with 100 per cent certainty the IRS would catch it in due time). So...I amended the federal & NJ...and e-filed NY...and all income is accounted for. Of course I pointed out his numerous errors on NJ...and gave him a nice bill. He has a PhD in software engineering and made about $500,000 last year....and truly felt foolish about not being able to file his return...and not believing all the data got reported.

  15. You didn't write a check to the school for their general fund. You charged some school supplies at Walmart or where ever. Your child benefited from the supplies. You directed them to be used/delivered them to a specific classroom/teacher that included your child. No. If you were feeling generous and bought ALL the supplies for the entire classroom and got a thank you note on school letterhead, maybe. Or you were a teach purchasing unreimbursed supplies for her classroom, yes (Form 2106 with receipts/concurrent calendar notes or Sch A Charities with letter from school).

  16. From what you are saying it sounds like short term. The clock starts ticking the day he purchased them.

  17. Just guessing, but have you tried duplicating one of those returns to see if the new file has less instances of the error occurring?

  18. Why would you tell him to file it, when you all know it's wrong? Then he'll owe interest and perhaps penalties on the amount that is over-refunded!

  19. I had 14 years with my first and 2kids. Now on my second in 1 month will be 15 years and 3 kids. Ain't life fun if you can stay out of the soup.
