So my boss is doing a refi. He is the sole shareholder of the Corporation. The Corp is a C corp. The lender wants copies of the K-1's issued to the owner!!!!!!!!!!! WTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't these stupid frikkin' lenders have a clue about when k-1's are issued? They have the damn tax return. Don't they know the difference between a 1120 and a 1120S. Waste of frikkin' time to work with these idiots. Rant over. Tom Hollister, CA3 points

Ya know, the voting period was 9/17-10/17. Not the best time for me to be thinking creatively. I literally didn't get the light bulb going off until yesterday. I'm going to try again next year, and I'll be better prepared. Last night I was watching as friends logged onto Facebook & messaged all of them. Got over 100 votes in a day! But I noticed not a lot of people were on here last night :(3 points

Hi all, I'm applying for a grant through this process, and need to get 250 votes to qualify for the next round. Anyways, I've got only 4 hours left and need less than 50. Didn't have a lot of time in the last few weeks to figure out how to work social media to get my posts seen. So anyways, help a fellow tax geek out please! https://www.missionmainstreetgrants.com/business/detail/115052 points

I'll call 'em on Monday & see what I can get. Didn't even see the email from ATX. I wasn't opening anything that wasn't from a client in this last week. My billings are down about 10k from last year. Didn't lose a lot of clients, but most of the same-sex returns were a lot easier than last year. I need to conserve $$ wherever I can. Ah well, if nothing else, that vote campaign sure did get my name out there in the last few days!2 points

My plan is to send my mailer out at the beginning of the year and put an extra sheet in there advising the ones with no insurance or partial insurance that I will not be preparing their return this year. If they come in anyway, hmmmm, not sure what I'll do, Hide under my desk? I would think that the lot of the EIC clients probably have no health insurance. Maybe get rid of two problems.1 point

You'll have to spend about $2000 to get the highest end model, probably. The form factor might be a tablet, but it's normal PC / Laptop hardware. In terms of power, it's no different from a laptop with a Core i7 and a 512GB SSD. The problem for me would be the keyboard and maybe the screen size. Even with the more expensive ($130 extra) Type Cover, the key travel is shallow. Text size on tax forms might be on the small side viewed on a 12" screen also.1 point

Reply Quote Favorites Copied from the ATX Board: Good afternoon, Changing the backup/restore server under the Admin Console is not the same as browsing to a different backup location within the Backup utility in prior years. It can lead to other issues potentially, especially at this time in the season, therefore I don't recommend that. If you want to make a literal "Backup" rather than manually copying folders you can go in the program to the Returns Menu, and Backup Returns, and click the button to "Copy Backup to Local Storage". We put that button in the program to make it easier for customers than going into Explorer and manually moving around files, and having to worry about the hidden folders. It does the same thing as jmdaviscpa states as far as copying the backup folder - but without the manual steps which some users may not be comfortable with. All that said, the best way for 2013 is actually to go through each page of returns, mark all on each page (using the Mark All button at the top), and then going to Returns -> Export Marked Returns. The export will create 1 file for each customer so you can see each name, and also is much easier to "restore" from than the literal backup, as you can specify the location to Import from, whereas you have to manually move the backup back into the proper folder to restore. Next year, give us a little more lead time. I logged in here too late to vote or help.1 point

I'm teaching a class on how to fill out the forms on the 28th, so I figure I better have a decent idea of how to do it by then. A way to increase billings....1 point

No, she had only 236 votes of the 250 required for further consideration. Joan, I wish you'd asked us sooner. I hit my FB friends up a couple of times pushing for votes, and those that saw it did vote, but on a Friday night in the few hours that remained there were many more that weren't on to even see the request. I know more would have voted at my asking if I'd been able to share your need earlier.1 point

I KEPT A COPY IN MY FILE of a divorce decree that stated "Mr C______ may claim the dependency exemption for Mrs C for 1/2 the year, and she may claim herself for the other 1/2."1 point

Now sure about ATX this year. Still stinging from the thousands the software cost me the past 2 years, and no apparent willingness of the company to admit it.1 point

Marilyn, it really is behind me. And I don't stress over things like this very much at all. My blood pressure is very low because of that mindset, too. It's just a bit disappointing. I don't recall the actual Bible passage but there's something about payments agreed to when workers put in a whole day and others who work just a short time get the same pay. I agreed to what I paid and thought it fair enough for me. But (whimper a little), I am just a bit disappointed that the price was much lower now. Same 10%, okay, but not lower. Thanks for words of advice, though. Not really stressing, honest!1 point

As I said before, put it behind you. What if you made a major purchase of a really expensive coat? Six months later you find it on the clearance rack for 50% off. Getting angry will only raise your blood pressure. I purchased the program I wanted. I put it behind me. I made enough doing extensions to pay for it. I like money as much as the next person, but sometimes it's just better not to stress over it.1 point

Here in MA we've had health insurance non-coverage penalties for years. They are a ROYAL pita; charts up the wazoo by county, by income, by family size, all needing to be cross-correlated. Software doesn't do all those calculations very well (ATX didn't do them at ALL - I had to look up every piece separately on the MassDOR book that I downloaded; Drake at least is able to pull the county and income info over and you add in the family size since that can be [often is] different from the exemption number), so there is lots of do-it-by-hand nonsense. Folks most likely to be hit are low income or those who had jobs and lost them and decided not to pay for COBRA coverage. Plus in MA we also have a requirement for "minimum creditable coverage" so there are still folks who don't meet *that* criterion and get penalized. Some do it every year, as the insurance they have is sufficient for their needs and the penalty is less than the step-up in coverage. My recommendation is to buy your Motrin in the convenient 55 gallon drum package for next tax season. Perhaps install a dispenser like the ones for gumballs/Skittles/M&Ms you still see in stores.1 point

I just got a call today from a long time client saying that he wanted to stop using Sch C and only use the C-EZ form. I asked him why and he said that he didn't make as much this year as he had projected for his health care credits so he doesn't want to take his expenses. His reasoning was that some attorney on the Internet said that expenses are optional and that you can do whatever you want. I asked him what he wanted to do with the equipment that he was depreciating and his office in the home. I explained to him that I have to sign his return and that if I know that the return is incorrect, that I won't be signing it. I also explained that his messing around with expenses may cause him to get a larger EIC and I wasn't going to be part of that. He said that the return would not be incorrect. I asked him if all of his past returns were incorrectly filed and he did not have an answer. I may have to dump this guy, because I can't trust him. Next year, he will probably want to change back again. This is why I hate having everything dumped on a tax return. I know I'm just cranky, but if my husband wasn't sick, I would probably be looking for a different job and get out of this mess.1 point
