  1. I would put in on Sch C or Sch C-EZ. It is income from work. Just like if he worked at McDonald's for a week or a month, never worked there before, and never will again. He would not get a refund of SS/MC tax. We never think anything about short stints with employers; I don't think we should with subcontractors working, either. I think the spirit of the law, so to speak, for line 21 is really "other" income, like awards, cancellation of debt, etc. You know, where there was no work.

  3. The refund would be taxable in 2015 when it was "received". The 1099G will be dated 2015. But the deduction... as I'm typing this I realize, that's a very good question! Since the taxpayer had control of the cash in 2015 and applied it then, I'm leaning towards it being a deduction in 2015.

  4. Properly worded we could probably get a grant in sufficient amount to allow most of to retire to study the impact of such a simple and elegant implantation suggestion. Anyone on board?

  5. My solution to DST is change the clocks permanently by half an hour. It's too brilliantly simple and elegant to ever be implemented. You're welcome.

  6. Each office must have a separate location license. Licenses are address specific. Anyone who tells you different is asking you to break the software licensing rules established by CCH. Attempts to use VPN and other such methods will be discovered by CCH. The ability to check those things has been integrated into the software starting with 2014. Each office must have a user license for each computer that will use the program. Contact your sales rep for exact pricing and details.

  7. My CCH website includes FileShare which I've convinced some clients to use. Easiest if I send their return/signature pages that way as they receive an email with a link. But, they can initiate use also, such as wanting to upload their tax documents. Am trying out CCH's eSign which sends a link that includes their return as well as the signature pages. Free to license the program; about $3 to sign with authentication of identity; about $1 to sign without authentication; $0 if no signature. More or less, haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

  8. I am not convinced that all my old programs will run on 10. What if I do not want to switch yet. I guess I can turn off however I found one of my programs had a very little check box for upgrade for which I did not spot until I saw it loading and stopped it. Maybe there is a way to stop this upgrade. Suggestions?

  9. It doesn't matter what solution you choose, some clients will have a hard time with it. We don't use a portal. We password protect PDFs and email them to clients. My favorite response is, "I can open the file but there's no place to put the password." You just can't help some people.

  10. My way of thinking was that he did not control funds until 2015 so the deduction and the taxable amount would be in 2015.

  11. LOVE it -- and you are right. Too elegant and too simple ever to be implemented.

  12. One of the first things I do on a new computer is turn off automatic updates. I set it to just notify. I always wait at least a week before installing and then search for articles on the latest patches to see if problems have been reported.

  13. My "kids" with the new premie are not at all happy with the time change. Infants can't tell time and still cry to be fed and changed at their usual times. I remember going to college where the time did not change and living where it did; made reading the train schedules a challenge.

  14. I changed the clocks and stayed up an extra hour. My kids got up at their usual time. Extra hour of sleep, my ass.

  16. I did hear one neighbor say that she is glad we are back to "normal" time. Seems that during the months the clocks are set ahead, the extra hour of daylight is killing her roses.

  17. Judy: Thanks also for those links. One of them I already had, but the other two were new to me. I'm not comfortable making a recommendation to the client, simply because I know IRS has an agenda and they often interpret their own rules to suit their objectives. No way I'm going to be in the middle of a disagreement over a couple of hundred unfiled 1099 forms. For now, I'm telling the client I can't recommend not filing the 1099's,even in light of the information we have on hand, but they are free to make whatever decision they wish.

  18. Wow! I'd say "helpful" is an understatement. Thanks very much for that link.
