  1. At least they puked in dad's car later, instead of in your office?

  2. There is a chance that we might get snow on Wednesday night < 1". Co-worker has already declared she might not be in on Thursday. I can understand it snowing and you come in 2 hours late but come on people. Locally, 90+% of the time the streets are completely clear by 10am after an overnight snow.

  4. But even there, you have people that don't have enough sense to stay home when they should. My assistant doesn't want to miss any time because she is paid by the hour (she has two weeks paid vacation, but she doesn't want to use that for snow days - or sick days). Can I tell you how many times she has come in on snow days without giving us a chance to clear the driveway, and then because she doesn't drive as well in snow as she thinks she does she winds up crosswise in the driveway and has to be dug out by hand because now the plow can't get around. She comes in sick too.

  5. Speaking of sick kids, many years ago a client brought in his two grade school age kids and was letting them run up and down the hallway without a care in the world. After they left, we found out the kids had drank almost all of the coffee creamers because they didn't bother to throw them away.

  6. Repeat offending clients that do this each season are also at risk of the @Rita method of dealing. Don't show up flushed with fever , loose cough, and dripping nose or eyes and tell me you are 'ok'. I'll be disinfecting everything!

  7. I've worked with a lot of people like that. Some of them miss several days after every snow. They're scared to death to drive if there's any snow on any part of the road. Driving on snow and ice is not taught in drivers ed, so you have to learn how to do it on your own.

  8. How about when a client comes in with a child and you ask if there is no school today. "Oh, he's sick so he didn't go to school." Well, thank you so much for bringing him and his germs into my office. And the poor kid should be home in bed if he's sick!

  9. My ex would get mad at me for not kissing her when she was sick. I'm not joking.

  10. We had a guy who prided himself because he never went sick. He would come in sniffling , coughing, sneezing and touching all our stuff. We wanted to kill him, and yes, it would have been self defense and there would have been no witnesses.

  11. I think that is justifiable as self-defense!

  12. So the question for @RitaB is - is it OK to kill those co-workers?

  13. I tend to buy the fastest computer with other high end components because computers slow down over time and I don't want to be frustrated by the inevitable slow downs. My computer is 6 years old this month and still going strong. I replaced the C drive with an SSD a few years back and I've replaced the CPU cooler and the graphics card, but the rest is original.

  16. I've used CFS for several years and have been thoroughly satisfied. I think their website is taxtools.com. I'll check and edit this post if necessary. Note: I remembered correctly! It is taxtools.com. Pretty good company and reasonable price....

  17. My Rep, Will Van Kleef, again told me that the MAX software will have the W2 and 1099 programs rolled into it. He said I was to use both my install codes when I download the program and I will get all my 1099 and Payroll forms loaded into Max. He did say wait for about a week before trying to roll over returns from the PR program because they don't have all the forms ready yet. So, I renewed today. I will download this weekend and see how it goes. Tom Modesto, CA

  19. The individual penalty ends with tax years beginning after 12/31/18, so we all will likely have clients that will have to pay the penalty one last time. All of the business related penalties remain in force, since the rest of the ACA is still unchanged law.

  20. So many questions are rolling in. Do I know the answers? Not always. My classes are late this year and will be held on December 2 and 3. I did order "Tax Planning for Individuals" 2018 Edition from Quickfinder and it has been a tremendous help. I did consider hanging it up, but this is too much of a challenge to miss out. Also, financial security is always an issue. We purchased a rental house in July. I just want to wish all of you the best of the best of tax seasons. Also, Happy Holidays to all.

  21. I'd make sure the computer you buy still has a CD reader. There are still a few CD users kicking around, and I have found it was worth having that included as an extra. A lot of the new PCs don't have it and you tend to not think of it. And I agree to get the business windows version too. I've always had luck with Dell

  22. If you aren't playing video games, doing intensive graphic design type work or mining for crypto currency, you probably don't need a high end computer. Client bought a new VERY high end computer - he only uses his computer to log into Aol via Firefox. I tried to explain that it was over kill but he insisted he needed the best.

  23. Article on multiple news sites today: "The Marriott International hotel chain said on Friday that the database of its Starwood reservation system had been hacked and that the personal details of up to 500 million guests going as far back as 2014 had been compromised. The hotel group, which runs more than 6,700 properties around the world, was informed in September about an attempt to access the database, and an investigation this month revealed that unauthorized access had been made on or before Sept. 10, Marriott said in a statement. The hotel chain said that personal details including names, addresses, dates of birth, passport numbers, email addresses and phone numbers for hundreds of millions of guests may have been compromised. The investigation found that “there had been unauthorized access to the Starwood network since 2014,” and an “unauthorized party had copied and encrypted information, and took steps toward removing it,” the statement said. Hackers also obtained encrypted credit-card information for some customers, but it was unclear if the hackers would be able to use those payment details. Marriott said it wasn’t sure how many passport numbers and dates of birth were stolen but said that it was a “subset” of the larger number of affected consumers. The hack affects customers who made reservations for Starwood hotel brands from 2014 to September of this year. The properties include Sheraton, Westin, W Hotels, St. Regis, Four Points, Aloft, Meridien, Tribute, Design Hotels, Elements and the Luxury Collection." The hackers seem to be winning. Saw an article a day or two ago that said during 2017 one out of every 6 personal bank accounts had at least one fraudulent incident during the year.
