  1. I'm with you two. I just copied a doc I had showing the points needed. I made a few notes, wrote my name on top and put NA in a few places. That was my WISP. Like mcb39 said, if it's not good enough for them, so be it. Hey, it's a WISP.

  2. I don't answer my home phone unless I know and like the name on caller ID. I do answer my office phone, but if there's a pause before someone speaks, I set the phone down. People answer texts, but I won't use texts for tax information or any PII. I end up texting clients to check their email or my portal or to call me, depending on the issue. Or, some will answer if I tell them to expect me to call the week of May 5th, for instance. But, calling the IRS or states or large companies or insurance companies or...!!

  3. I thought everyone knew that putting your password on the side of the monitor wasn't safe, you have to put it under your keyboard where it can't be seen. LOL.

  4. Like Margaret, it's just me here. Anyone trying to access my stuff would need to get into my house - past locks and alarms - then into my computer (password protected) then into my secure drive (a different password) or my online portal (yet another password). WiFi is totally locked down, hidden, inaccessible. How is adding more "authentication" crap going to help keep anyone's stuff more secure? Answer: it won't. What makes good sense in a multi-person office, or large corporation, is simply stupid in a one-person operation and leads to the idiocy of passwords on post-it notes stuck to the side of the monitor.

  5. Its bad enough to fill the form out online EVERY SINGLE TIME but most of the time when I get to the appointment they will ask me AGAIN if my address has changed (since I filled out the online form yesterday?) and so on. What a waste of time.

  6. Our dentist's office is a sole proprietorship--not part of some national chain. There are two people working in the office. Yet when I call them there is a menu, "press 1 for appointments, press 2 for billing, press 3 for...." It's not like they have 16 different departments to route my call to. Grrrrrrr. Some of our clients have expressed surprise that when they call us a real person answers the phone. Sad.

  7. First and foremost, she needs adequate errors and omissions insurance as well as regular business insurance, and a personal umbrella policy for however many millions makes sense. But in the past 30 years I've only done LLCs, which she could do and remain a sole proprietor. Whether it's worth electing to be an S corp is hard to say, but factors to consider are losing the home office deduction, paying for payroll processing and payroll tax returns, and paying for an S corp income tax return. With a service business, the IRS is going to want to see almost 100% of profit being taken as salary and not distributions.

  9. I made my own as well. Took it from the IRS prototype, changed it to meet my needs, and then made my employee/spouse read and sign it. Scanned copy in the folder somewhere - Where did I put that? Oh well, like all the 8879s that I sign that the IRS has never asked to see, I am sure I could do a search of my documents and find it if I need to. Tom Longview, TX

  10. I wrote my own WISP; printed it and sealed it in plastic. If it's not good enough for them, so be it. I can step aside any time they want me to. And, of course, there is that unforgiving increase in the price of the program. ATX, as well and an email every other day reminding me that I should renew before the end of May. I have not even decided yet what I am going to do about next year. Pretty soon the phone calls will start.

  11. You already received the best answer is to have client use IRS' Direct Pay. About the above statement, don't ever assume that a bank or credit union offers overdraft protection or that the account is of the type that even has that set up.

  12. Ah, those pre-registration online forms....So within the same hospital system (all my doctors save one), every #$%^&^%$#$%^ (thanks, Catherine, for this special word) appointment reminder requires ALL of this same information which they already have. I'm 79, I had one child and won't have anymore even though I'm not on birth control. Geez! At least we are not alone.

  13. I got a phone message left just today, reminding me of an appointment for something or other. Let's just ignore that I already got, and responded to, the email notice. And went online and filled in all the #$%^&^%$#$%^ forms they now require (where you have to click all the &*@#$%& checkboxes; it was ridiculous). My guess is the text message comes next. Message was annoying but at least funny. Recorded, not even a real person, and it sounded like the "play" speed had been mis-set to make the recording sound like the "person" was either drunk or tranquilized.

  15. It is my understanding that paper filing is not allowed. I spoke with the Pres of a non-profit yesterday who tried to paper file and the 990 was returned to him to be e-filed. I have not done a 990 this year; I thought the only social security number required was for whoever was signing the return? Can't you change to some other officer signing and use their SSN?

  17. All of my doctors use different systems, so the questions are basically the same but in different orders, on different forms, and worded differently -- so you can answer Yes to one and No to the same info but worded as did you ever instead of did you never. You have to read carefully and read every page. I'm 78 and can NOT remember when I had my last period or when I had my tonsils out (3rd grade? how old was I in 3rd grade? what year was that?). And if the form is seeming too easy, it's probably because I already responded to the email so now the text is a duplicate!

  18. I use a Google Voice number to text with clients. Texting seems to be the main way to communicate these days. All my healthcare sources text me reminders of appointments and allow me to check in online. Although I was at one doctor's office yesterday and the receptionist told me their online portal and their office software are not connected, so they have two separate systems they have to look at.

  20. The QR Code doesn't take you to a website. It pairs your cell with your software's MFA for one, and only one, purpose. A 6-digit number on my cell changes every 30 seconds. When I type it in the screen after the password screen as I try to open my tax prep software, my software opens. No one could open my software without my frequently-changed password AND my cell. Search and you'll find that some preparers have used an authenticator on their desktop instead of on their cell, if you don't want your cell involved. MFA is not your WISP anymore than your left sock is your entire outfit. But the MFA is one part of your WISP. I think our software companies are required to use something like these authenticators, probably to gain IRS approval of their software. So, we're going to have to get used to it. I had trouble setting mine up, even with CCH's help and my IT guy talking me through it over the phone. Tried 3 different authenticators. He stopped by my home office and had it up and running and me at ease with using it in a minute or two!

  21. No reciprocal agreement for nonresidents selling WV property. Taxpayer will need to file a WV nonresident return that will include the cap gain on the sale of the property and will calculate the total WV tax. Then the tax withheld on the sale will be applied against that. Here is the WV code sec: https://code.wvlegislature.gov/11-11-5/ Seller or settlement agent should have filled out WV form NRSR at the time of sale which calculates the tax to be withheld from sale proceeds. This form must be attached to the WV nonres income tax form. You should check the WV IT-140 instructions as to whether paper filing is necessary, but it may be possible to attach the form as a pdf attachment. https://tax.wv.gov/Documents/Withholding/nrsr.pdf The withholding at sale is claimed on the WV nonresident income tax form. It should be entered on WV IT-140, line 15. Your client will receive credit for that withholding against their total tax, and they may owe some if the withholding wasn't enough to cover what they owe, or they will get a refund if the withholding exceeds their WV total tax before payments and credits. You should read the instructions to line 15 to make sure the appropriate federal forms go with the WV filing. This link contains the IT-140 and its instructions. https://tax.wv.gov/Documents/PIT/2024/it140.2024.pdf

  22. My bank has that option for certain accounts, but the account holder must set up that feature, kind of like setting up the online bill pay or online banking for statements. The account I have doesn't have that feature available, and I don't have a savings account there anyway because their products aren't worth investing in.

  24. Attorney should get 1099. IN GENERAL, the part for services provided to your client should be on NEC box 1. The settlement portion should be on the MISC, box 10. The amount to include will depend on how the check was made out. My basic understanding is that if the check was paid to only one attorney, then obviously that attorney gets the 1099 for full amount. If one check is paid to co-payees, I think they each get a 1099 for the full amount. If attorney gets money and part is for co-counsel, then attorney gets 1099 with full amount, and they issue a 1099 for amount they paid co-counsel, but again, that depends on who check is made payable to. There is also the issue on what type of settlement the payment is for. Example, as the article below explains, payments for personal injuries don't require 1099s to the injured party but will be issued to the attorney, depending on how the check is made out. I'd suggest start your reading with the article below from the ABA that is written in more layman's language and is informative before going to the 1099 instructions for preparation, and then the code . The 1099 instructions do reference the applicable code sections. Also, perhaps a separate post would be better for what portions of these payments are deductible by your client. Slippery Pencil is correct that attorneys are an exception to the corporate rule. They get 1099s regardless. Anyway, here is the ABA article to start with: https://www.americanbar.org/groups/business_law/resources/business-law-today/2020-february/irs-form-1099-rules-for-settlements-and-legal-fees/

  25. And no, I didn't mean to say "WASP"... But all of you know what I'm talking about anyway. The increasing talents of the identity theft pirates mean that we must jump through more hoops every year to protect ourselves (and clients) from identity theft. This year we were supposed to have a "WiSP" Written Information Security Plan. I drafted a WISP from my seminar materials. I counted on Drake to provide the machinery necessary to bring about my WISP. When I contacted them, they showed me one of those weird rectangles with all those tiny dots. My daughter calls it a "QR" or something like that. I objected to Drake, as I don't want to deal with something that I don't what is doing, and apparently this thing is supposed to suck personal data from my cell phone, which has absolutely no tax information stored in it anywhere. I asked Drake for an alternate method and they said absolutely not. And of course, they are billing for renewal with an 8% increase. And no effective response for my WISP. I feel out of touch with this whole scenario, and I'm sure there are those among you who will chime in and agree. Why can't we concentrate on becoming better tax preparers and not have to become I.T. people? For what it's worth, I also subscribe to the Elon Musk belief that we are in danger of A.I. running our entire economy and taking personal decisions from us. This post may invoke all manner of comments. I didn't engineer it that way, at least not on purpose.

  26. Question for those using a 'secure' client portal such as Verifyle: I am a sole practitioner. To access my computer one has to have the login and password. To access Verifyle, one must have a different login and password as with my tax software. I don't see how having yet another authenticator for either of these does any more to protect my client data from myself. What I do not see with Verifyle is how to 'authenticate' or otherwise control my client's access to the portal with that client's information. Am I missing something (highly likely)?

  27. Lucky for me, I don't have to do too many appointments. The annual eye exam, regular dental exam. I should I suppose go to my GP for a physical (I think they call it a Wellness Exam now). The last time at my GP, she said after three years, they consider me a new patient. So I guess I should try to get in within the threee year limit. Ha.

  30. My bad! User error. I was using the wrong screen to enter the current treasurer's SSN and thought it was looking for the past treasurer's SSN. My brain must not be fully recovered yet.

  31. Agree with both above. SSNs don't even show up on the 990 because they are available to the public, so it is for only the e-filing signature. Just have either use the current treasurer or one of the other officers sign and use that SSN.

  33. And so it goes. My office phone is a landline. I have given my cell number to a few clients. Some clients try to text my office number and of course, they can't text a landline. Then there is the 'e' everything. Oh well, what can I do, go with the flow.

  34. Had a client get one of these a few years ago in late October, after early October filing. Two days later, I got one. We both owed, him a lot, me - not so much, as I paid the bulk with 4868. The verification process was so DAMNED intrusive, that the client said forget it. I did the same. Neither of of ever heard anything afterwards.

  35. Had a farmer go through this two years ago and its still not finalized. Hence my post above about 2 years later. They asked for "Income Verification" only in first letter related to Schedule F. Client sent that in. Then 6 months later they wanted Schedule F "Expense Verification". Sent that in. 6 months later, they wanted copies of their Schedule C and Income/expense report related to that. Wife had small schedule C with around $1200 in income and no deductions other than some material. Well, we sent that in along with copies of all 1099's, W2's, 1098's, etc.. We mailed in everything, including hard copies of the tax return. That way they couldn't ask for anything more !!! 6 months later... they get a letter stating all is in order and a refund will be issued. 6 months later, still no refund. And it isn't much of a refund !! A few hundred !! Moral of the story.... Send them everything, including the kitchen sink !! If you give them only what they ask for, it will drag out.

  43. I am thankful for every day that I get to open my eyes. At my age, some of that is the result of routine exams. For my husband, as well. Eight years ago, when I had breast cancer, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Both were caught very early. Last summer, I had not been breathing well for over two years before it got to be too much for me. The result was 7 days in the hospital and I am lucky to be here. The hospital Dr said that I had been sick for a long time and would have a long recovery. I am just now turning the corner and will soon be driving again for the first time since last June. I survived another tax season and am considering another one because I don't believe that my work on Earth was finished. The medical practice certainly can be annoying, but it can save your life.

  44. And your doctor recommends you to another specialist. Let's say your primary doctor recommends you to a dermatologist. Now you have to fill out and answer the same questions over and over again - same information that your primary doctor has. They can't or won't share information - "privacy" they call it. A year later you go back to the same dermatologist -same questions over and over again.
