Three times in the last few years, I have received a check that had no signature or any kind of mark what-so-ever on the signature line and I went ahead and deposited them anyway to see what would happen. All three times they went right on through and I never heard anything from them. My daughter whose name is listed on her checking account as "Regina" signed a check one day as "Gina" and it bounced back because the name didn't match what they had on record. I guess everything depends.

0 = nothing, yet makes a big difference.

I can't believe that Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Kentucky are at the top of the list. It ain't possible.

I have had clients bring in a handwritten sheet of notebook paper with all expenses neatly presented that I felt completely comfortable in using. I have had others bring in receipts that I had no way of knowing if they were business expenses as was mentioned. Ultimately, we have to accept the word of the taxpayer unless we have reason to believe that the figures they give us are not accurate. I used to have a client that brought in a hand written schedule F every year that I felt completely satisfied that the figures were genuine. I wish that I still had him, but he died about three years ago.

Thanks JohnH. I have never looked into it because it has never really been a problem. I have toyed with the idea, but never gave it a lot of thought. On the few that I have lost money on, I just felt that they needed it more than I do.

All 10 of the digits? I have most of them memorized.

And another point, I live and work in a rural area and cannot get cable or DSL. I am dependent on satellite and when the weather is bad, I would be out of business.

Here is one I use. www.afsb.net. VERY inexpensive. Not a whole lot of flexibility, but very good for the money.

Thanks everyone. I still can't understand why the IRS isn't saying more about this on their website. Or maybe I'm just overlooking it. I think it is about time for me to get out of this business.

What is this about mandatory filing of form 3115 for anyone owning property? I searched the IRS website and looked at the instructions for form 3115 and the form itself and find nothing about this. Am I having a senior moment or am I going blind or what is going on? I have seen this mentioned on this forum recently, but have not seen anything anywhere else. I haven't seen anything on the Drake forum, but surely others are talking about it if everyone is going to have to do this. I'm beginning to doubt myself. Please help this old man.

I have a one sheet worksheet I send out and most of my clients use it. It would be nice if clients would use the organizer, but I think most feel that if they complete the organizer, they have done most of the work. I have only had one client ask for an organizer, but he didn't use it when I sent it. I don't send newsletters, but I have a small practice.

Or maybe call a professional for free advice.

I have never understood why something like this would work. Why would an honest person turn in a perfectly good gun and I am absolutely certain that a criminal would not turn in one. Whats the point? What is wrong with an honest person having a gun?

Thank you PapaJoe. I wasn't aware that they had changed their name or had a new web site. My wife had retired from nursing and is now helping me and she has done the reports the last few quarters. I do check the reports before they go out but the notice didn't appear on the reports themselves. It is quite a change to go from nursing to accounting. This really had me perplexed and I appreciate the information.

Does anyone know what is going on with the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations (Labor Dept)? Every since the first of the month when I try to log on, I get a message that "Your connection is not private. Attackers might be trying to steal your information" and the https symbol has a line drawn through it. I tried to call the local office in Gadsden and their phone has been disconnected. I tried to call the district office and their phone has also been disconnected. I tried to Call the state in Montgomery and I can only get a computer. I can't seem to be able to talk to a human. This is really weird. Quarterly reports are due at the end of this month. What do we do if we can't get through?

This is also my reason for not charging by the form. I would like to find an equitable way to file by the form without gauging the client.

I bought my wife a laptop with a black keyboard and the letters are awfully hard to see, even in good light. From now on, I will not buy anything with a black keyboard.
