  1. The hospital would have charged you a whole lot more than the $30,000. The insurance company only pays a fraction of the amount and the hospital writes the rest off. The hospital will usually give you only a 10% discount if you pay within 30 days.
  2. Looks like people need an attorney to protect themselves from the attorneys.
  3. The only problem with upper case only is that the names on the letters will appear in upper case while the rest of the letter is upper and lower case. Looks kind of bad.
  4. $499 - Wow! But I wouldn't fight that mob even if it were free.
  5. When my wife divorced her first husband, she did everything she could to keep a good relationship between her children and their father. She went way beyond what most women would. I am really proud of her.
  6. The reason I stress my fees and penalties is to let them know why I'm charging more for my service.
  7. I intend to add the following paragraph to my letter this year: "Please be aware that the IRS is putting more and more responsibility on tax preparers and backing it up with heavy penalties if a preparer is negligent. I may be asking more questions and requiring proof in more cases. I CANNOT ACCEPT ESTIMATED FIGURES. Tax preparers are in a more precarious position than ever before." I also state in my letter that the better they organize their information, the less time I have to spend on the return and that my fee is based on the approximate time I spend on the return. (I can't bill by the hour because I am a one person office and am continually being interrupted by the phone.)
  8. I had gotten up from bed after working the midnight shift and walked over to the store across the road. The store owner told me that the president had been shot. I couldn't believe it.
  9. I don't know about others, but my bed is certainly like a magnet. The hardest thing I do every day is get out of bed. Once I do that, the rest of the day is OK.
  10. I'm a clerical employee. I am the owner, clerk, and janitor in my business. Sometimes I am also the maintenance man.
  11. Can anyone besides me see who Halloween honors when we make light of demons and witches?
  12. The delay may also delay the IRS in approving the programs. The software companies may be later in getting the programs out.
  13. It surprised me. I expected a longer delay.
  14. Jack, if you don't like the political forum, just don't go into it. I don't. What goes on there doesn't bother me a bit. I don't know anything about it.
  15. He used his actual name, Louis Sheffield, on the original ATX board.
  16. At least he was willing to bring her back twice a week. That ought to be worth something.
  17. That is a good point. Maybe if he paid her like her other clients do, it would fly. Most of her other clients would also have offices in their place of business. She probably does more routine work for her husband than for other clients, but we are not limited as to how much we can do for a client. We could even offer phone answering service for our clients. For anyone considering having an office in home, a separate structure from the house might be a better option.,
  18. Sounds like your comedian is a clown.
  19. >>His boss was moved into a lovely paneled office but didn't have the level to merit paneling, so the paneling was removed.<< Now that REALLY makes a lot of sense. Are you sure he wasn't working for the government?
  20. Does the dog have vicious looking teeth? Maybe he would qualify as a guard dog. Or maybe you could train him to do data entry and claim him as an employee.
  21. At least I don't have this problem. My office is a totally separate structure about 35 feet away from my home. Only problem is commuting. I have to walk to work every day, rain or shine.
  22. >>A friend once lost her OIH in an audit when her pictures showed her screen saver was a picture of her granddaughter.<< Now, that is being really picky. How many auditors have pictures of their family on their desk. My understanding is that since the IRS closed many of their offices, their agents work out of their home and the government pays them for the use of their home office. Do they fall under the same rules that the rest of us do?
  23. When I worked for the government, my supervisor would not let me work over on my own time. Someone had worked over every day for a period of time and then one day applied for back overtime and got paid for it. After that, they were very careful to not let anyone work over unless they were on overtime.
  24. Guess I'm not a nerd. Oops . . . I wasn't supposed to reply to this.
