  1. It's a combo of keys that automates the data entry for repetitive things you do all the time. Drake has some that are predefined, and you can make more that are custom to your needs. For example, I have one that enters the dates and PINs on the PIN screen no matter what screen I am on by pressing the ALT & P keys together. I have it set up to do the entries and to remain on the PIN screen, but I could have set it to handle all the entries and return to the demographics screen instead.
  2. If this is a revocable trust with either the taxpayer or spouse as the trustee, then he has retained control over the assets and will continue to report the income from the trust assets on his personal return and no gift tax return for the transfer of assets into the trust is required. It's different if the trust is irrevocable or if someone other than the taxpayer or spouse is the trustee.
  3. KC did provide the cite, and you even quoted it in your last post. Here's another article directly from the SSA's site that says the new assignment method began on 6/25/11. http://www.socialsecurity.gov/employer/stateweb.htm The link within my article about the Randomization takes you to the article KC posted.
  4. Add it to basis.
  5. If they do sell in the future, and assuming that they otherwise qualify for the principal residence exclusion, the amount subject to recapture because of depreciation is not eligible for the exclusion. Also, a special rule enacted in 2009 limits the exclusion if the home was used for other than a principal residence, such as rentals or vacation homes. The gain would be prorated so that the exclusion is for only the time used as a residence, and the portion of the gain that relates to its use as a rental, vacation home, or other “nonqualifying use” after 2008 would not be eligible for the exclusion.
  6. DANRVAN and Ranger must be the same person. Both user names have the exact same IP address. DANRVAN/Ranger, why do you use 2 names?
  7. John, do a search for "Mac" over on the Drake forum and you'll see it does run well. Look for one topic called "Running Drake on MacBook using VMware". It was a post from 2012, read to the end, says Drake runs fine.
  8. Yes, I agree.
  9. Our latest forecast is for more snow starting tonight into tomorrow afternoon -
  10. Are all the functions at the top of the reply box grayed out? If they are, you might have clicked on the top left button for "BBCode Mode". Click that again and those functions should no longer be grayed out and be active again.
  11. Where might I order one of those?
  12. You can't unmark it, but all of the topics will still remain in the same order with the most current activity at the top. If you were on yesterday, you can look down the list and see which topics have new postings since then. It is probably only about a dozen or so. I was only on for a few minutes earlier this morning and I wasn't having any trouble then or now.
  13. Yeah, I think we all were too. I went back and put a smiley in my post. Now, do not expect me to part with my Pentel mechanical pencils though. I do still use those to write in a real appointment book. lol
  14. JB has only the individual program, not the payroll compliance program. He was looking for a solution for preparing one 1099 without having to purchase the other program.
  15. I used my typewriter once or twice a year, so when it finally broke last year I decided not to replace it. Every time I used the shift key it raised those letters up 1/2 space. It's been years since I used 13-column paper, but I still have some of that too.
  16. I used a 7-year life for those type trailers that are owned by my landscaper clients. If you look up the class life, 5-yr property includes trailers and trailer-mounted containers (class life 00.27). That sounds like larger tractor-trailer type trailers to me, but it doesn't specify the size. Maybe I was wrong to use the 7-year life, but I treated it like other general equipment.
  17. If you don't want to file online, you can still order the red printed forms from IRS. I have a few extras of the 1096s and 1099-misc too that I could send to you if you want to prep that way.
  18. Last year I had a client give me the info after I'd cancelled ATX, so I used this online service. It's a couple of bucks and you can print and mail the recipient copies with the service efiling, or for an extra dollar, the online service will also handle the mailing to the recipient. It's very easy to use. If I needed it again this year, the client and recipient info is still available there for me to create from: http://www.efilemyforms.com ETA - price is $2.99 for e-file only per 1099 for up to 50, $3.49 if they also mail to recipient. JohnH recommended this site to me last year.
  19. 1099 prep is done in the payroll program of ATX.
  20. Thank you, Mr Pencil. I've been reading this topic and trying to picture me asking some of my existing clients for their driver licenses, birth certificates, and SS cards. Some of my clients I've known for 50 years, I went through school with their children, and have been preparing their returns for 30 years. Now I'm supposed to verify that they are who they say they are?
  21. Does not compute. March lull? No such animal around here. I don't have any that come in Jan, had 4 by the end of last week. Clients are starting to come in now and a few of the business year-ends. Almost all of my more difficult individual returns are done in March. I don't have any lull until late summer and fall.
  22. This video actually made me laugh out loud. Kitten vs gecko -
  23. I'm not quite overwhelmed yet, soon will be. My clients are calling and dropping off earlier, for sure.
  24. Atlanta is in the middle of an ice storm. ATX shut down and sent everyone home with the last one, so perhaps that is why no one is answering. I am able to log on to MyATX, so I can't say about their servers.
  25. FTM, I sent you a PM about Drake. Taxxcpa's suggestion would require that you purchase the unlimited package for full price if you wanted to include the payroll returns. In my PM I suggested that you consider Drake on a PPR basis for $285 that would give you all the forms they offer and ALL STATES. The $285 includes 15 returns on the PPR basis, so you could use that as a backup and for those returns that you want the 2106EZ, and states that TaxAct doesn't allow you to have, and any other forms that may not be available to you. It's $19/return after the first 15. ETA - Drake's demo is FREE. It is a fully functional complete program from last year. That would allow you to see if your system has any trouble running it. Support is phenomenal.
