The employee is part of the municipal/state retirement system. Therefore, she is not allowed to also contribute to SS. One or the other, but not both.

Ignore. Problem solved.

"Unexpected Error Program Needs to Close"? Try this!

Call tech support. Be obnoxious till the "customer service" person connects you to a tech. There is a function inside the program that should only be set to once a day that is happening once an hour. I do not remember where that setting was, but if you do get to a real tech, it can be changed. -

The "memory leaks" would not be a problem except for this Windows trait. -
The Congress will not change it because if they do, they will not be re-elected. Politics at its finest.

Great ideas, but: As long as Americans use the tax refund as a savings plan and want their refunds immediately, the fraudsters will have free reign. Till the mindset of the American public changes and becomes more intelligent, the problem will always exist.

Computers here stay on 24/7. Each morning each workstation is rebooted. At lunch time, each workstation is rebooted. Late shift reboots at dinner break. This works around many of the system resource hogging problem of the tax program. Does not eliminate all, but has reduced major issues by 95%. If the program and computer are doing something very strange, FIRST step is to close all programs and reboot. This is a Windows problem that has existed since WIN95. This has been a public service announcement. -
Nothing. He chose to exceed the established deduction amounts.

The taxpayer should contact the IRS first. I have had 10 of these so far at the firm this year. Any other course of action causes confusion and more work. As long as Americans use the tax refund as a savings plan and want their refunds immediately, the fraudsters will have free reign. Till the mindset of the American public changes and becomes more intelligent, the problem will always exist.

On the Education Expenses input sheet for the 1098-T, uncheck the box that says "add this to education credits" and things will correct themselves. That checkbox adds the scholarships and grants to the amount paid.

That is NOT a working strategy. Client WILL repay the student loans one way or the other. Telling a client not to pay a Federal obligation puts them and you in a very dangerous situation.
-
The client should call the IRS and follow their specific instructions. Each person may have different situations. Painting broad brush strokes of what steps to take is not a good policy for this situation. Only file form 14039 if instructed by the IRS. Contacting the credit bureaus and freezing their credit is a very effective way to stop unauthorized people from opening accounts in their name. However, this letter only indicates that the SS# has been compromised. No indication that total identity theft has happened. Our tax filing system is so very simple to fraud with just a SS#.

If the estimate vouchers have barcodes, you are fighting a losing battle. They will not create without a dollar amount. I am sure the client can go to the VA page and print it out when they are ready to make the payments.

I prefer to enter each one each year rather than risk a client changing banks and I use wrong information.
-
These letters from the IRS indicate activity on the taxpayers SS#. Instruct your clients to call the number on the letter immediately. No other action is proper.

The program has been checking that box when the form is added. I have started deleting when there is a refund, and unchecking the box the rest of the time. This is something new in the past 2 weeks. Probably one of those form updates. Everyone should send a complaint to [email protected].

Check the birth certificate. They may be surprised...

"They said they already withheld THE taxes." Those HR people that tell clients that should be publicly shamed and lose their jobs. Yet they get away scot-free. If we give advice like that, we get penalties.
