  1. There are tons of free file shredders out there. I've never used one though.
  2. We run all our email through Gmail accounts, before downloading locally. We put a shortcut to the spam folder on our desktop. Also, when I start my browser, the Gmail spam page is the first page. Overall, we've been happy with Gmail's spam detection, but you still want to check and clear your spam everyday or at least a few times a week.
  3. Easily?! Withholding is whatever QuickBooks says it is.
  4. You should never use a home OS for business. It's too limited in too many ways.
  5. We use bitlocker on all of our computers, but not with any other software. I have only had bad experiences with Symantec software.
  6. 16 is likely enough. You can always add more later if you see it's using most of that. Touch screen is not of much use in ATX. My monitors are too far away to be comfortable to touch, anyway. Plus, I don't want fingerprints all over my monitors. People have reported installing quite a few years back. We did back to 13. USB 3 is at least twice as fast in our experience, but your devices have to be compatible.
  7. Yes, but we were finding it harder and harder to assemble win 8 computers so we ended up with 2 win 10 computers including the server. If we need ATX support, we can get it on one of the win 10 computers. Also, this will give us some experience with 10. But we did move 4 or 5 computers from 7 to 8.
  8. You go into the BIOS and check/change the boot order so it boots from a CD first. Then google how to create a boot CD. I know my IT guy can remove the passwords from computers, because he's done that to me at least once when I didn't give him the password for a computer he was working on.
  9. You can file multiple W3s for one company without any problems. They just aggregate them.
  10. The other thing we learned was that we don't need QuickBooks installed on the server. We can access the data files from any computer that has QuickBooks installed. The less running on the server, the better.
  11. We spent about 10 hours setting up our new windows 10 server this weekend. Copying data to/from external SSDs took longer than expected. We replaced our Win7 server with a Win10 server and here's what we learned. Stop the ATX server services on the old computer before copying data. Copy EVERYTHING in both: C:\ProgramData\CCH Small Firm Services C:\ProgramData\Wolters Kluwer Copy the data to the new computer BEFORE you install ATX. ATX will find the data and your settings and view it as a reinstall so it goes smoothly. We had no problems with 2016-2018, but we had to run the ATX database repair batch files (.bat) to repair 2014 & 2015. 2013 didn't work at first, then mysteriously started working. We didn't go back any further. You can find the batch files here: (There's a separate one for each year) https://support.cch.com/kb/solution.aspx/000041746 YOU MUST RUN THESE BATCH FILES BY RIGHT-CLICKING AND CHOOSING 'Run as Administrator'. We ran them not as administrator first and it did not work. Then I went back and read the web page and read the instructions again, more thoroughly. Good luck!
  12. Data is data. Doesn't matter if it's on paper or digital. The only reason they mostly mention digital is that's the way most people work these days, especially larger firms.
  13. Wouldn't work for us about an hour ago.
  14. We had the same problem yesterday. At first we couldn't even login, but I cleared browser data and were able to get in and download one transcript, but got an error on the second one.
  15. Je t’en prie, madame.
  16. You can see all of your install codes here: https://support.atxinc.com/myinformation/MyProducts I had to use the Print Friendly & PDF add-on to get a usable printout with all the years. It's a wonderful add-on to have for many hard to print, or ad-laden web pages.
  17. It's pretty hard for anyone, anywhere in America to live on less than 30k, roughly 15/hr. The poverty rate for a single person is about 12k. Add up rent, utilities, transportation, clothing, health care, taxes, etc. in your area and back into your own minimum wage. We start everyone at $15/hr.
  18. We routinely delete all rolled over letters and re-add them. But first we customize the current year's letters, which is a pain because it's hard to see all of the parts of the letters. Also, we never install until January because early versions are loaded with bugs.
  19. Was an appraisal done? I only researched this topic once but I recall that of it was sold for less than FMV, it can result in a charitable deduction, too.
  20. You don't have a copy of QuickBooks? We do all of our 1099s in QB.
  21. I've changed my backup drive to a second drive because my C drive is smallish (SSD) and haven't had any problems. It is supposed to work in later versions (after 2013), but I haven't tried it. You should really encrypt all of your drives. That's what we do and it's almost invisible to us. Just an extra password when booting.
  22. Why do you say that? ATX's has a video that says to do exactly that. I'm assuming you're referring to the data folders.
  23. You are correct. https://myatx.blogspot.com/2019/11/atx-2019-preview.html
  24. Sniffing out where data are stored requires you to be quite the computer sleuth. Besides the usual suspects (Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos, etc.) you should look in: C:\Users C:\ProgramData First, go to Windows View settings and set it to show hidden folders. I believe both of the above are hidden by default. You can buy a relatively cheap hard drive enclosure, for the old drive, so you'll be able to access any missed files for a long time. Or just keep the old computer around, as has already been suggested. And, of course, I always recommend a backup service to keep your files safe. But that brings us back to having to know where all your important files are scattered across your drive.
