  1. Hey Sara....at least it held off until later than they thought. It sure is pretty though! Be careful...cuz I NEED you. Times like this, a Home Office is nice. ;)
  2. At the top of the page, go to Forms, drop down to Lists, Open Lists and click on Create Statement
  3. Are you exporting them to your laptop or saving them there.....seems to be a step missing here.
  4. No, sometimes you have to open it in the "2007" Program before you roll it over.
  5. I had that message with one client. It was because his file didn't have the latest updates on the 2007 return. I guess if you have the archive disk for 2007, I would install it and then open each return in 2007 that you want to roll over before you roll it into 2008. I know I have to be really careful that the returns I export to my flash drive are at the same level of upgrade as the update level of the program on the laptop. So, I always update laptop ATX before I import a program. :scratch_head:
  6. If you lived at home in one of the designated counties, I don't think it matters. If the school was in the disaster area, so was the home he lived in....

    1040 X

I actually filed one several weeks ago using the Draft form. The numbers populated correctly.; so does the IRS really care as long as it is correct and they get their money? This person had filed her own and took her 20 year old son who made over $20,000 as a dependent. This prevented him from filing. She had to amend. I was able to file WI electronically and Fed paper as, of course, his rejected. Fed check did clear her account quite soon after filing the amendment.
  8. There is a box to check on the Tuition Credit Worksheet. If they go to school in one of the qualifying counties, you check the box and it automatically increases the Tuition Credit. So far, I have printed maps from four states; WI, MN, IA and MI; which show which counties are qualified. Maps are at www.fema.com
  9. FYI: I got it solved but not to my satisfaction. First went to WI because they were all WI companies. State verified that all EINs were correct. Refiled; rejected again. Filed WI alone; accepted. This AM I called the IRS e-file Authorized Profiders\EROs. Talked to a very nice gentleman. Turns out that W2 #4 which is the one that I suspected is not in their database. I asked him if it is because it is a new Co and he said probably, but reject code would not indicate that. I will have to paper file Federal.....
  10. Quickfinders Page 12-9...."Qualifying expenses paid by a student are considered to have been paid by the parent if the student is claimed as a dependent on the parents tax retunr (Reg l.25A-5(a) Also: If a parent claims a child as a dependent, only the parent may claim the education credit for the child. I have always thought that the tuition credits follow the exemption. Someone, correct me if I am wrong. Lucho: I would have no problem with giving the parents the dependency exemption and the tuition credit. Subtract the scholarship from the tuition and go forward. Obviously the child is not supporting itself. Eventually the loans will have to be repaid and then the child will get to deduct the student loan interest paid.
  11. That would have been my answer. Also, nowhere does he state how much income the student had. In my experience it is not unusual for parents in that income bracket to be entitled to the tuition credits.

    NT:Lost again

Yeah, me too. Actually it ended up in my deleted mailbox, but I usually check there before I delete. Wouldn't a couple of thousand have been nice right now. I could turn away a few obnoxious clients. I actually told one yesterday to quit pushing me and quit calling on Sunday.
  13. I e-mailed the WI DOR and a very nice gentleman is going to check them all out for me. I sent him the one that I thought it might and I was wrong so he told me to send him the rest. Will let all of you know.
  14. I got one of those also. It is clearly marked on the bottom that it is for tuition paid for 2009. Student started in Jan, 2009. The parents will use it on 2009 return.
  15. I had a niece like that last year. I waived my fee; but she had to pay the $20 to the bank for their fee.
  16. Thanks so much for your suggestions. This is my only reject to date and is distressing. I know I can paper file, but I am the person who wants to "fix" it. Thanks again.
  17. BUT,,,,,,I am working on one right now who closed on 2/19/2008 and missed qualifying by less than 2 months. It was difficult to tell them that. Who ever thought up these cut-off dates?
  18. Thanks for responding. This is a 19 year old kid who was someone else's dependent last year. I don't even recognize the names of some of these employers; some I have tried to match with other clients who did work for the same places. I will have to aske the young man to "go search" but don't expect good results.
  19. This year they are asking when they get the new stimulus. This is right after they call to ask if their taxes are done yet. I am approximately 47 behind at this point. Not even March 1 and everyone wants a refund. I have 114 accepted e files already and most of the difficult returns are still out there. Studying some law or other every night and hoping that I don't come unglued.
  20. Client has four W2s, so, of course, I don't know which one it is. I have deleted them all and re-entered data. Still comes back rejected. Is there somewhere to go to find out how to match EINs with Employers.; such as E-services? Thanks for any info.
  21. But so many of them do think in just those terms. I agree with the ethnic impropriety.
  22. Yes, Bob, they were coming through really fast at first, even earlier than the dates on the chart. Now, for the past two weeks, there doesn't seem to be any set pattern and a lot of them are coming in a week or two later than anticipated. I am no longer telling them to expect it by the chart date. (Of course, most of them are afraid that the IRS is running out of money!) I doubt that you are doing anything wrong.
  23. You are correct. She gets the additional $300 this year. Have had several of these. Many times they were students last year and nobody got the stimulus because they were someone else's dependent. This year they are working and get the full $600..
  24. Happy Birthday, John....... This is the first thing that has caused me to smile today.
  25. First put an X in the box on Line 39c. Click on the number on line 40, standard deduction. A box will open up with two choices. Do not choose Schedule A, choose Compare standard and itemized or wording to that effect. A worksheet will open up. About halfway down, it will ask if you paid property tax. Click Yes. Go down a few more lines and it will ask you how much property tax you paid in 2008. Fill in the amount. It wil then calculate $500 or $1000 and carry it to Line 40 on the 1040 and add it to the standard deduction. Forget about the schedule A.
