  1. You can hardly call it stealing when she is being paid for a service. Any of us who have been through it know how difficult it is to take care of an elderly parent; whether they are in house or in a facility.
  2. It was recommend months ago to send them separately. You have to put a check in the box at the top of the State Efile info page. You create them both, but only Federal gets transmitted. When they ack comes back from Fed, the State changes automatically from Held to Created and is ready to send. I have had no problems using this method. It was harder to get used to here because WI has always been a piggyback state.
  3. When are they going to start allowing us to file amendments electronically?
  4. I have all of my Federal and WI acks as of last night.
  5. All acks are in. All paper returns are mailed. People are still calling with the oddest questions, but the pressure is off. Everyone have a great rest of the year. We all know that it never ends. CE next month, reference books to order as well as making sure supplies are up to par. This is when I will purchase my two cases of paper because it is on sale now. Have plenty of toner, etc. Might even be a good idea to clean the office.
  6. I SO feel for you. This morning my internet connection disappeared. Fortunately, a modem reset did the trick. But, why today? Poor connections must get tired too.
  7. Last client called in his final information over the noon hour. He is coming in to sign and then I am locking the door.........for today.
  8. HUH????????????
  9. I just don't go there, have never gone there and have no intention of going there. I never argue politics or religion. Just not my cup of tea. I was glad when it got its own forum.
  10. I am wondering if my post is invisible. Anyway, Pub 17 Page 146 has the cans and cannots nicely laid out for you in a Table. Also see Pub 502. It does not sound to me as though the Fiduciary was administering allowable medical care other than transportation. I just had a client pick up the final return for his deceased mother. We certainly did not consider the time involved in his making final arrangements for hospice, etc; to be medical expenses. Only the amounts he paid with her money for actual professional medical care.
  11. There is more of it than many people think. I have the Form 14039 PDF'd to my desktop for easy access.
  12. I just came across this when I wall researching hospice expenses. I don't have time to look it up again, but am sure it is not deductible. Probably falls into the same category as funeral expenses. She can take mileage for the visits to the doctor.
  13. I agree with all of the above. What a time for this to happen.
  14. It really depends on facts and circumstances. If this is a client in good standing, I generally don't charge unless then ask if they owe me something. Then it is a very minimal amount. My take on this business is that it is not "all about money"! Now, I don't need ten people jumping on this post to tell me how stupid I am. I already know what many of you think.
  15. Depends upon what you mean by recreate. If you are forwarding it, the answer is NO. If you are creating an entirely new efile, the answer is YES
  16. I have some who have gone from a boot box to a carry case file system. One step up. I have set up a few clients with double entry spread sheets, done by hand, and they are doing amazingly well. Probably because they understand the concept.
  17. I would rather work extra hours during or right after tax season than back myself into that kind of corner. Even the few that I have to finish are slow on the input with the info that I need. BTW, the guy who said that he shredded all of his deceased mom's checkbooks, magically found them today. He had all sorts of nice numbers for me this AM, including the Estimate payments. Amazing what they can do when you tell them that they owe $3400. It is now down to less than $800. It didn't make sense to me that a slowly dying woman wouldn't have any medical expenses.
  18. Business use of the home will often create a zero Schedule C. In fact, I am waiting for mileage from one of my extensions and even after I add the mileage, he will still have a zero Sch C; because of the carryforward of OIH.
  19. They can actually find things that we have entered incorrectly (heaven forbid). Usually it is personal info such as phone number, house number, but I have already had to amend because of a client finding something missing. At least they are looking. However, the majority will call and ask for a copy of their return. When you ask what they did with the one you gave them, it is usually "I don't know!"
  20. I wasn't even able to get into e-services last night. I really have never found them very helpful anyway. The IRS is expecting us to work with a broken system, but our due dates remain the same.
  21. Pretty hard to get a 2848 from a deceased person. Son and heir is in and out of town and time is running out. Waiting for last important piece of info regarding in-home hospice care which will make all the difference in the world to this return. I will file it then and expect the IRS to make the adjustments if indeed estimates were paid in. These people have had since July of 2012 to get the stuff together. Now, in the final week, they wonder how Mom's tax return is coming. She received a 1099-Int for $26094 of Bond Interest.
  22. Is there a way to find out if a client paid in any estimates? I thought I saw that option once on IRS.gov. In my case, the lady is deceased as of July and we don't know the answer. Son and heir, foolishly shredded all check books already.
  23. It would take too long to go into details in my case. I did not meet with her personally, but did exchange e=mail and phone conversations regarding the "deal-breaking" issue(s) before I wrote the final letter. I don't handle confrontations well and this was a difficult step to take. I do think that the fact that her children and siblings still remain my clients, speaks better for me than for her. I didn't make the decision lightly, but have never regretted it. I don't think that you have to let your clients control you in order to be a success in this business. (Guess which one of the Emoticons is me!!!)
  24. I had to do this last year and, believe me, one of the best things I ever did. I certainly did use some of the above suggestions. I also offered to help in any way that I could, and she took me up on it. Problem here was that it was my daughter-in-law's sister. She was one of my higher income business clients, but she wasted as much of my time as she possibly could. Good side is that her children and sisters all still come to me.
  25. I fail to see what is so difficult about presenting a 1099. I have contractors who work with both Corps and independents. The software makes it really simple to create 1099's and a 1096. These are the sort of things we get paid to do.
