  1. I fail to see what is so difficult about presenting a 1099. I have contractors who work with both Corps and independents. The software makes it really simple to create 1099's and a 1096. These are the sort of things we get paid to do.
  2. In WI, independent contractors have to be covered by WC Ins as well as contractors insurance unless they present proof of having their own insurance. I don't do corporations either, as a rule, but neither have I ever had a company ask one of my clients to incorporate. I have, however, had cases where a EIN is needed. I also agree that it is $600 or more.
  3. This is one of the greatest joys of life. We will have our first Great-Grandbaby in two weeks or less. This is even worse than the first round. Our Granddaughter is so happy and healthy. This is why we live. This is why we work! Congratulations!
  4. I remember him very well. He was one of the backbones of the board. Louis was always such a gentleman.
  5. Jack, I am hanging on your every word and watching for you to provide more insight.
  6. I'm not the best one to ask, because I never had any of those issues in 2012.
  7. Yes and Yes
  8. When I worked for an independent accounting firm; I had already established my own small practice. She knew it and that is why she hired me. I worked for her until my own practice got too big for me to handle both. We remain friends to this day. She has been retired now for a couple of years. Nobody wants a return that they sign to be prepared incorrectly., which is what happened to her in the final years of being in business.
  9. Lion is correct. Open the program on the old computer. In the Return Manager, export all of the returns to a jump drive. Open the program on the new computer. In the Return Manager, import all of the files into the program from the jump drive. It is amazingly simple.
  10. You had to be there to know what was involved and how the tests were carried out.
  11. I always had a steady increase until this year. (2013) This year I backslid some. Part of the reason is all of the divorces and clients who have passed away or no longer need to file. Also had a few clients marry each other; so two became one. Otherwise, I cannot account for it as I had the usual number of new clients. I am only comparing the income and not the expenses.
  12. Yes, at approximately 11:30 CST I had no problem accessing either irs.gov or healthcare.gov.
  13. I was just on the phone with a client and bookmarked the irs.healthcare website. I had no issues accessing the IRS website or the healthcare site. Hmmmmmm? I suppose next time I try, it will churn and churn.
  14. Where is your backup of the returns? Did you not export or backup to an external drive as you went?
  15. I have already registered to continue on with the one I have been attending for the past twelve years or so. CE is a MUST in my book; required or not.
  16. We have considered all of the above options. Fed is done and gone. WI, however, has a 4 year look back. Yes, the check was only in his name and I have furnished the auditor that I am working with all of the current info that I can find on him. Unfortunately, since this is not a new game to him, he knows how to stay one step ahead. Since she is a responsible teacher who has held the same job for years, she is an easy mark. Hindsight: Should have filed MFS., maybe.
  17. I find this interesting as I am trying to resurrect a 2009 return for a client of mine. I referred them to another preparer in 2009 because I could not deal with the husband. They were already separated and divorced in 2010. The wife came back to me. Now she is getting hit by the State for an Exxon settlement paid to her X in 2009; which the preparer did not report properly on Federal and not at all on state. I think there needs to be some recourse for taxpayers to go after some restitution from an erroneous preparer. At the very least, she should refund the preparation fee. She is no longer returning my calls. The Feds already withheld their cut from my client's 2011 refund. (How hard are they trying to find him? Probably not very hard because she is a sitting duck.) He had this Exxon spill issue long before she even married him.
  18. Thanks KC..........
  19. I also broke it, but they got on it right away and fixed it. Encouragement for all!
  20. Even though we don't always agree, and sometimes you light my fire; I surely do miss and respect you and your knowledge and input. Hope you had a great day.

    Aflac payout

What kind of a 1099 is it? I have two different clients who work for Aflac as agents. They are considered self-employed and their 1099 income is fully taxable. They also receive stock in lieu of payments; which is also taxable. One of them has left the company and I will be so glad when the other one does. Aflac has some strange rules in re agents and what is deductible or not.
  22. I have learned to love Win 7. As Catherine says, my XP computers are acting a little dippy lately (maybe by design). Will still keep the desktop to use for programs that are not Win 7 compatible, such as Print Shop, etc.

    ATX 12.18

I have Malwarebytes as well as CC Cleaner in addition to AVG. I just got a notice that this laptop (XP) needs to shut down to activate the updates. Sometimes I think they throw us a bad apple and then send us a fix. (ATX is not alone)
  24. Welcome to the train track club. Our answer was that if you don't like the noise, you shouldn't build near a train track. My husband's father owned this land long before they decided to erect a Power Plant across the road with trains coming and going at all hours. And, yes, even though there are lights and gates at the crossings, they still lay on the horn. We escape to the Northwoods as often as possible. Serenity and total quiet.

    ATX 12.18

Surprisingly, I had two more when I shut down at noon today. Am out of town and on my tablet now.
