  1. She's probably bringing that because it lists the birth dates and SS numbers.
  2. Since you asked, it's spelled "monotonous." I try to avoid correcting spelling unless asked. Julie (former spelling bee champion)
  3. And, of course, if all else fails, beginning Feb 15, you can use a substitute W2, using information from his last pay stub of the year.
  4. I would rather see a section where serious answers with cites are copied for reference after being posted here. I like this one the way it is.
  5. Not for that alone. But if they have reason to audit the 8829, they just might.
  6. http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/articl...=109807,00.html Here's a start. But if she really wants to go to someone who won't put her through all that hassle, I would be tempted to cheerfully say, as she's on her way out the door, "Let me know how the audit goes." If that doesn't make her stop in her tracks and ask questions, nothing will. As for the question I can actually answer: In Firefox, it's Ctrl+ In IE, it's View (on the top menu)....->Text size ..->pick the size you want. That's one reason I like Firefox.
  7. George is right. Use the Rollover feature. In ATX 2006, go to the Rollover manager, check the returns you want to bring into the next year, then click the Rollover puppy (left end of the toolbar). "Export" and "import" are for moving a return between computers, or backing returns up to disk.
  8. He has his own business but workers comp paid the hospital bill? Can you clarify? I don't think you can get workers comp insurance on yourself in the first place.

    1099

Check out www.filetaxes.com. I've used it a couple times when I needed to do one or two 1099s. Price is reasonable for that purpose, and they take care of the filing issues.
  10. Don't know what they're doing, but, like Jack from Ohio pointed out, the IRS says it will not accept tax returns with those forms before Feb. 11. That early filing may have been a mistake, if IRS cannot process them correctly.

    What a day....

I've noticed that a number of new clients come in expecting to be ripped off. I think that's what you encountered here. I guess they've just come to expect not to be treated well, or are not sure what to expect of a business like mine. It doesn't mean they're trying to commit fraud; it means they don't understand what we're doing. So they listen to their friends, and then they're sure you did something wrong. Often they have very low incomes. In many cases they're getting off welfare for the first time, or participating in a "welfare to work" program. I point out to them that the government is giving them a "thanks for working" gift of about a third of their earned income. It takes a while to win their trust, and they are generally not in an income bracket that makes a "desirable" client. You can't expect someone like that to be impressed by the certificates on your walls, or your years of experience. All they want to know is whether they can trust you at least as much as they trust their coworkers. There were times when I was nearly brought to tears by their obvious appreciation for simply being treated like a human being.
  12. I would simply file the wife correctly, with the correct address, and let the chips fall where they may. Let her know what the penalties are for fraud, which her new husband is complicit with and responsible for. (If he actually signed and filed the return with the fake nephew, he has accepted the responsibility for that fraudulent tax return.)
  13. The Tax Book gives (p 4-1) a limit of $50 per night, meals not allowable, but does not give a cite. Quickfinder says the same thing (p5-3) No cite there, either. I have a client coming in, so no time to look further. Julie
  14. I did one for a client last year, and it did not calculate correctly, regarding the depreciation limitation and interest/taxes expense. It seems ATX calculated one form at a time. Anyway, I did a workaround by moving things around between the two forms to make them calculate the depreciation limits correctly.
  15. The most likely answer is that client isn't telling you that she changed her W4 during the year, usually because a co-worker told her she'd get more money. I mention this whenever I see grossly low withholding, and the client generally admits to this. I hate to be cynical about this sort of thing, but I don't recall any client ever volunteering that information. They had to have a W4 on file in order to have hired her. It's pretty hard to see how the company could be held responsible unless the company stole the money, (i.e., her W2 and pay stubs do not match). If she receives the money, she's responsible to pay the taxes.

    MFS CA

I had one like that last year....I made all the adjustments in the worksheets that are between the input pages and the 1040. I do not know how well IRS handled it, but I haven't heard anything. I filled in the W2 and 1099R input sheets exactly as the forms came to me, but on the line 7 worksheet I put in the W2 adjustment, labeled "community property adjustment," and so forth. So that page 1 was correct. I don't know how much went to IRS, but they should be able to figure it out.
  17. Mine came yesterday...but when I unfolded the tab pages, one was missing.
  18. I would expect her expenses to include the cost of major surgery.
  19. New one for me too...I'm thinking...Is the money actually a reimbursement for her medical expenses? Those would be considerable for such a donation. A 1099-Misc generally means that the issuer thinks this is taxable income, so why didn't they tell her that? Or did she misunderstand? At any rate, ask her about her medical expenses.
  20. In general I agree with jainen, but there is always the risk the husband has already filed and claimed the kids, or that he will itemize deductions. You need to discuss that possibility with your client. No matter how you file it, there's a chance she'll get a letter from IRS.
  21. No, I didn't know. Thanks. My business has grown some, and I have an outside job (that I'm on leave from during tax season), so I can't live on bulletin boards anymore, but I still check in when I can.
  22. I noticed that, too. But Firefox has a nice little add-on called IE view (you can get it from the Mozilla site) that can be configured to direct particular urls directly to IE. Julie
  23. This was a problem I'd been struggling with...I mentioned it, I think, in another thread. Today I can fix it. Yesterday I couldn't. It must have been updated, because I can't figure it out otherwise. So...try updating and see if the problem goes away... -Julie
  24. I haven't checked this year, but I believe it's in the "customize master forms" page.
  25. afterthought: I've used ATX since TY 2001. I have gone several of those years without calling tech support from ATX. Anyone who was reading the community forums knows I used to spend several hours a day there, mostly solving other people's problems. I could do this because (besides my own lack of clients) whenever I had a problem, it had already been described, discussed and solved on the board. (Thanks largely to William, of course.) Since they closed it down in April, I've probably called tech support three times. I doubt I called them that many times in the previous five years. This is the first year I did not renew early. I do not expect to renew early next year, either. I'm keeping my options open. Julie
