From Wikipedia:

Probably the most famous Pogo quotation is "we have met the enemy and he is us." More than any other words written by Kelly, it perfectly sums up his attitude towards the foibles of mankind and the nature of the human condition.

The quote first appeared in a lengthier form in A Word To The Fore, the foreword of the book The Pogo Papers. Since the strips reprinted in Papers included the first appearances of Mole and Simple J. Malarkey, beginning Kelly's attacks on McCarthyism, Kelly used the foreword to defend his actions:

"Specializations and markings of individuals everywhere abound in such profusion that major idiosyncrasies can be properly ascribed to the mass. Traces of nobility, gentleness and courage persist in all people, do what we will to stamp out the trend. So, too, do those characteristics which are ugly. It is just unfortunate that in the clumsy hands of a cartoonist all traits become ridiculous, leading to a certain amount of self-conscious expostulation and the desire to join battle.

"There is no need to sally forth, for it remains true that those things which make us human are, curiously enough, always close at hand. Resolve then, that on this very ground, with small flags waving and tinny blast on tiny trumpets, WE SHALL MEET THE ENEMY, AND NOT ONLY MAY HE BE OURS, HE MAY BE US.

"Forward!"

>>testament to the marketing ploys of the past<<

Yeah, that's what happened to Pogo. He got co-opted by environmentalists, who felt he was a better spokesperson than an anti-war alligator.

I missed #12, having abandoned team sports after I lost my Y.A. Tittle out in the breezeway when my one and only "leaner" was knocked down. I remember when Wonder Bread only built strong bodies 8 ways--much later I learned the "wonder" had nothing to do with adding 8 or 12 chemicals to our food, but to a balloon race long before my time. Speaking of chemicals in food, I also remember when Dentyne prevented decay and the sugar-free lobby shut 'em down, ironically so because their cyclamates turned out to be worse than sugar!

I got all 20, and I am 'only' 48. Of course Superman I saw in reruns, Pepsodent I guessed, I've never seen Dobie Gillis but anyone who knows popular culture should know Maynard G. Krebs, & I know music pretty well (a least anything recorded before I turned 40 and that isn't rap). My laundry day song is "ITS.... laundry dooty time, Its laundry dooty time, lets get out the grime, its laundry dooty time!"

Lets all sing along!

Joan, you need a hobby. Or, at least multi-task, so you can let the laundry run while you prepare taxes. Of course, if you find yourself singing your laundry song to tax clients....

My nitpicking hubby says Namath was in a magazine ad and not a TV commercial (I think I remember the commercial, though) and that the order is wrong for Good night.

I got all 20 . . . . sure must have watched a lot of television when I was young.

The Joe Namath commercial: he is shaving and the blonde is saying "take it off, take it all off". Was that Gillette? Was that just one commerical or have I blended two in my memory. Anybody remember?
