  1. Me, too. We go to church, eat lunch, and sit in the living room watching TV and talking. It's like heaven. Also caught church tonight. It was like an AA meeting. Attitude Adjustment.

  2. LARRY MAY BECOME MY NEW FAVORITE!!!! A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her class by saying, 'Everyone who thinks they're stupid, stand up!' After a few seconds, Little Larry stood up. The teacher said, 'Do you think you're stupid, Larry?' 'No, ma'am, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!' The math teacher saw that Larry wasn't paying attention in class. She called on him and said, 'Larry! What are 2 and 4 and 28 and 44?' Larry quickly replied, 'NBC, FOX, ESPN and the Cartoon Network!' Larry watched, fascinated, as his mother smoothed cold cream on her face. 'Why do you do that, mommy?' he asked. 'To make myself beautiful,' said his mother, who then began removing the cream with a tissue. 'What's the matter, asked Larry 'Giving up?' Larry's kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local police station where they saw pictures tacked to a bulletin board of the 10 most wanted criminals. One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person. 'Yes,' said the policeman. 'The detectives want very badly to capture him.' Larry asked, "Why didn't you keep him when you took his picture?" Little Larry attended a horse auction with his father. He watched as his father moved from horse to horse, running his hands up and down the horse's legs and rump, and chest. After a few minutes, Larry asked, 'Dad, why are you doing that?' His father replied, 'Because when I'm buying horses, I have to make sure that they are healthy and in good shape before I buy. Larry, looking worried, said, 'Dad, I think the UPS guy wants to buy Mom ....'

  5. I rarely do . . . but this year I did go to the Amazon basin in Brazil for two weeks from Jan 29 - Feb 11. I'm on the board of a missions group and that was the only time everyone else could go. We did a board meeting and some missions work. It made for a bizarre year-end processing season in January and frantic catch up since returning . . . but it was worth it. The only problem was it was 85 when I got on the plane to come home and 8 when I got off the plane in Columbus (OH). You'd think someone could have arranged a warmer welcome! Back in 2005 my mother died on March 17 and a few years before that my sister died on April 8. In both cases I had to take some time off. I was somehow able to make it all happen but it was misery upon misery.

  7. Doctor, I have this irresistible urge to sing 'What's new, pussycat?' Ah. You're suffering from Tom Jones disease. Is that common? Well, it's not unusual.

  9. I consider it a vacation when I have a day with no or few appointments scheduled and the phone isn't ringing every fifteen minutes. I actually get some work done. Today is such a day. Tomorrow, back to Nuttsville!

  10. I did! Left Monday evening at 8:00 PM. Went to a luxury suite at a hotel 60 miles away and did not get back till yesterday evening at 8:00. BTW, yesterday was my 19th wedding anniversary. We ate at nice restaurants, went to a movie at an IMAX theater and were the only people there!! No phones, no computers. Did not want to come back home!!!

  11. I decided to devote some time this morning to updating several macros I had written last year to speed up several data entry steps. I was thinking I'd have to re-write the macros. But when I went to edit, I found that Drake had moved my existing macros into the 2013 program, so all I needed to do was edit a few line entries and I was done. It's really nice to work with a program that anticipates things like this and does them for you.

  12. I always file when a 1099-S has been issued to avoid questions down the road when the IRS does 1099 matching. You will need to report it using Form 8949 and Schedule D (Form 1041).

  14. I set up our church on Powerchurch about 20 years ago the first time I became treasurer. We use the membership feature and full accounting as well as the contributions module. I really like nearly everything about it. My church is also small but we 'religiously' have 2 people meet right after the service in the church office and count cash and add up the checks. Each signs the count sheet then they go together to make the deposit into the night depository. The recording of the contributions is done later in the week taking the amounts from the envelopes duly marked. Just last week we began trying to record on a prefilled spreadsheet with names and numbers generated from Powerchurch. It lists all the names and envelope numbers. All we need to do is enter the amount and fund number. It's great to have the total at the bottom which we attach to the deposit ticket as have a copy ourselves. It seems fewer people are using envelopes these days so this way we don't need them for the recording after the deposit.

  16. Another new client from HRB. This time, HRB included an itemized list of their charges per form. Holy Cow do they charge a lot! Really need to think about our pricing moving forward.

  18. BTW Jack, I run multiple copies of Drake simultaneously and not just multiple years and still no Resource Limit messages. Face it Jack, it is an ATX problem. The fact that you found a workaround to deal with the problem, doesn't change that the ATX problem exists.

  19. Jack, I don't think so! I am Not using ATX, but using and routinely running 7 to 10 programs concurrently, including 2 QuickBooks windows (a known resource hog) and NEVER EVER receive that message. Yet a few of my friends using ATX often do. Sadly I had to tell them to reboot their computers every time ATX leaks resources. And yes I still provide ATX support to several of my friends that I brought to the software years ago.

  20. >>>>>"Your computer skills above being a user are being clearly defined by your responses."<<<<< Isn't that what we are - users? If we were computer programmers/technicians most of us probably wouldn't be tax preparers. Tax preparers should not have to re-boot a computer every few hours just to make a program run. IMO, but I'm just a user.

  21. its very involved, for the 3115 you need to recalc the depr as if it were depr under the shorter life then subtract out the amount taken. the difference is the current year adjustment or extra depreciation. I usually put the new life assets separately on the schedule and subtract the corresponding amounts from the original building on the books. ie I create new asset called 5yr-cost seg, 7-yr cost seg and 15yr-cost seg. plug in the opening amounts as previousely taken and override the adjustment to current year deduction. you also have to do these calc for alt min purposes for the 3115. the 3115 has a bunch of questions that need answering and I do it on a separate schedule and attach. don't forget to discuss bill with client, my charge is about $1000 per building. if this is the year of purchase then of course you just start the depr as per the study and no 3115 gets filed.

  23. Vityaba does have a point. Yes, on a regular basis I would have 6 or more programs open at once and for many hours a day: 2 years of ATX, Quickbooks, Thomson Creative Solutions Fixed Assets (the Ultra Tax deprec module), Word, and Excel, plus Adobe Reader or Acrobat. Then you can add in the internet and the background programs that are running like the anti-virus, and the updaters for the deprec and Quickbooks programs that were running. On top of all of that, there would be the PPC research library that I'd open too, or the Roxio photo editor that I'd open a few times a week. I used to never shut the computer down at night either, so the only time it was shut off or rebooted was when a program update required it. I've never ever had a low resource warning, never. This current computer is on from about 6am until 2am the following morning, and I don't ever have to reboot, and still have much of that running during the day except now it is Drake. ATX has always been a memory hog and has gotten dramatically worse in the last two years, and it apparently still has some other big issues too.

  24. I got it late today, but one of the returns I had open was pretty complicated. Also, I think as the day goes on, the resources are more strained. Probably wouldn't hurt to "reboot" around noon.

  26. And how about printing the Sch B because I checked the box at printout time instead of making me go to the Sch B and check that box at the top? Oh, you thought I didn't really mean it? It reminds me of EFTPS asking if I'm really, really sure I want to log out. Well, yeah, I think so.

  27. Cathy, the children inherited their father's half and received a stepped up,basis on that half at father's death. That will not change. Then with Mother's death the children inherit Mother's half, receiving Mother's half at stepped up basis at her death. each 'half' has a differing stepped up basis. So, using the $ in your example. Half of $100,000 at father's death = $50,000 , owned by mother And $50,000 shared by children At Mother's death total house is valued at $150,000, half of which is already owned by children at their cost basis of $50,000 Children inherit Mother's half now valued at $75,000 At Mother's death total basis of house to,children is $125,000 ($50,000 and $75,000) Hope this helps Lynn EA in LA

  29. I can't charge what they charge because I can't turn returns around like they do. Plus, I like the way I conduct business, and I also like that people cannot say I overcharge. People leave them for that. Many of them come to me. And they stay.
