  1. Lady dropped off Monday. She had no health insurance 2015. She calls today: Hold off on doing my return. I've been checking around and I'm getting health insurance so I won't have to pay that penalty. I had no idea she had a DeLorean Time Machine. Her Flux Capacitor is really going to pay off this time.

  2. If you mess up, you make it right. The client has every right to consult whomever they want. Refund your original fee (for the return you goofed, it happens) and be as gracious as possible about it. No, you don't have to pay the other accountant, too, but if you feel you should, go ahead. You never know what good might come out of it.

  3. Guy asks me the date. 4th. He dates the Form 8879 “1/04/15”.

  4. Dear OCD Client: Thanks for the fax which included: five forms, one unnecessary cover sheet, seven pages of instructions for recipient, the facts about your Social Security Benefit Statement, and the page from your investment company that served as their mailing slip. Got every thing I need. Thank God, dunno how I would do your return without all this. P. S. Sorry I missed your call asking If I received everything. I was at Staples buying paper and ink.

  5. At least they didn't fax 30+ pages backwards which results in 30 blank pages

  6. It's "Tar Heel". But when you hear us say it, sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between "Heel" and "Hill". Just remember that "Hill" and "Heel" and "Heal" all have two syllables. With some North Carolinians, it's also hard to tell the difference between "Tar" and "Tire", but that's another lesson.

  7. Bahahaha do you know how hard it was for me to keep quiet?? He's in his 20s. I wonder if he thinks that date on his phone is the temperature.

  8. Glad it wasn't the 5th. He might have pulled out a bottle of JD!

  9. This is why I use a fax service and get my faxes as PDFs. I can delete, rotate, rearrange and save just what I need. We use MaxEmail, in case you're interested.

  11. no way would I let him double dip, refund your fee or cover his cost but not both. The fact that he even let another cpa look at your work and then didn't give you the chance to fix it says that he isn't coming back anyway. He lost faith in you or was shopping around. since the return was in your system the fix would have been 10 minutes but the new guy had to recreate the return first and then amend. Probably paid full prep charges to that guy.

  13. My original hometown was Forest City, NC. But if you "ain't from around here" and you ask a local the name of their hometown, you'll think everybody came from somewhere else. That's because you'll swear they said "I'm from Far City".

  14. My AT&T allows me to use WiFi for calls, data, everything, when available and not waste my minutes. Because I have WiFi at home and AT&T has a LOT of hot spots and I even have WiFi at the kid's Inn in the middle of the Moosic Mountains along the Delaware River in the middle of nowhere, PA, I don't use up minutes to use data. Although, we'd had a grandfathered plan for years that was unlimited until adding a fifth line was going to kick us off that plan. We get to share, so two of the kids that use a lot of data don't get dinged for overages since I don't use much data on my line. AT&T has been pushing some cheap plans lately after acquiring someone else, T-Mobile maybe. Might be a good time to shop around.

  16. See, get me anywhere there is sweet tea, bbq pork and some grits and I loose all sense of nick names (or where they belong). Although as good as NC and TN pork goes, you can NOT beat good Amish barbeque anything (including sweet slaw)!

  19. I agree with Michael. Here is what I would tell him: "Since my fees were for the preparation of the return, you received services for my fee. The fact that you chose to use another professional to make changes does not change the fact that you received the services you paid for from me. Your choice to not allow me an option to correct an "alleged error or omission" indicates that you were willing to take on additional expense based on someone else's judgment." "Therefore, there will be no refund of my preparation fees, as you received full benefit for them." "Good Luck with your new tax accountant." Anytime a client takes my work to someone else without contacting me first, they end up as former clients. I do not tolerate them second guessing me without contacting me with questions.

  20. I use eFax. And, it doesn't wake me up like my free-standing fax machine does when that client just has to fax me at 5:30 a.m. before they go to work -- and I just went to bed! Can delete, save electronically, &/or print. Send and receive. Got to pick my own fax number, too.

  22. Yeah, we're finally starting to not get raped on our cellphone bills. Personally, I credit the providers offering more sane plans now, including Google Fi. Verizon revamped their plans several months after Google Fi went live.

  23. The 1099-C will only be issued AFTER the lending institution clears the debt from their books. I have seen this be as much as 3 years. When the debt was forgiven is not the date that matters. I have dealt with this issue several times. The client is at the mercy of the bookkeeping practices of the lending institution.

  25. Another Purdue friend, this one a guy: There's a couple chains like outback and Texas Roadhouse about 15 minutes off campus in Lafayette. Closer to campus there's a really good pub called nine Irish brothers that has a pretty good steak and some really good Irish pub food.

  27. Always. I charge more to do a partnership or corp return, and I make sure the return reconciles!

  28. From a Purdue friend: Mountain Jacks is my personal favorite - it's a little pricey, and it's pretty far off campus, but the food is amazing! Make sure you have your son eat in at least one of the school's cafeterias/dining halls/food courts. It's gotta feel like it could be his home for four years.

  29. I haven't heard of PDQ Bach since the 80's when I saw him at Carnagie Hall. I was dragged there by my opera singer girlfriend and concert pianist and I didn't get one of the jokes that the classical music lovers were hysterical at.

  30. most w-2's don't add it to the NY wages, you have to do the add back on the state form

  31. You are correct. The 414H (at least in NY) is a MANDATORY contribution to the state retirement plan. Form 8880 gives a federal credit for VOLUNTARY contributions. You didn't ask, but the 414H contribution is NOT taxed by the federal (you noticed the difference between boxes 1 and 3), but IS taxed by NYS. When the client retires, the reverse is true - the pension distributions will be taxed by the feds, but not by NYS.

  34. I use Arial 14 pt. I don't have many state returns, so I have room, and I omit the tax bracket lines at the bottom. I don't know what the hell happened to the "your return will be e-filed". I have tried to get it back, and I'm not holding my teeth right. I played around with color and cursive font some, too. It's a girl thing. ATXLetterCoverSheet.pdf

  35. I just went back and re-read this entire thread. So, is it correct that a divorced parent can claim the EIC even though it is not her year to take the child as a dependent. She qualifies, father does not. She is filing HOH though they have joint custody, but if she had child for more days it qualifies her for HOH. My mind is just a'churning here.
